This is a funny story, and great animation. But what I think i love most about this video is the narration. The narrator speaks so casual and fun with it. I really hope to hear more!
Getting your name changed would suck. My friend once told me of some conservative neighbors she had who would have foster kids. If they had foreign sounding names they'd give them what they thought were more "christian" names. I can't imagine what that would be like, having an adult tell you your name isn't good enough for school or your home. It'd be so confusing. I'm never going to do that when I take in foster kids.
I think it's more of a White thing than conservative. I'm conservative and Hispanic. I would never change their names. I would, however, be inclined to say "Fac". ha
Every time I hear stories like this, it never fails to gob smack me over the sheer arrogance of some people, or why it was even remotely acceptable. It's not something that would ever enter my mind, let alone do.
when people immigrated to Australia (back in the days of the white Australia policy) they got their name changed officially, Luigi became Lewis or Larry, Mario became mark, and a strange name that wasn't easy to change (like Armando) became John or some other generic name. Dont know if they all stuck to their new names (most did), but they were their legal Names from then on.
My grandpa was named John when he was born since his parents were Mexican but he was still highly discriminated back then and during the great depression he would search through trash outside a bakery and eat moldy pies. Poor guy.
My maternal Grandfather's original family name was Travaglio. He was born Joseph Vincent Travaglio. But later in the 1950s he changed his last name to Trava.
My grandfather's name was changed intentionally when he was born in 1950. When his mom singed his name on his certificate at the hospital which was full of white doctors and nurses, she wrote down his name as "Berto" but when she got it, someone changed it to "Bruce". How the fuck you go from Berto to Bruce????? But since then, everyone liked it because we got to call him Brucito.
So.. Why did Upworthy feel the need to take this StoryCorpse Video and re-upload it with a new title.. Why not just link to the original StoryCorpse Video? Down voted for taking someone else work and using it to get views on your channel
I agree with your sentiments entirely by the way. I don't agree with the ethics behind Upworthy and other companies because they make money off others content entirely. There's some interesting articles about their business models in fact.
I fully understand the racism of what was done to Mexican children, but what people from other countries (from both Spanish speaking countries and European countries) do to my name is kind of similar. They can't pronounce it so they kind of make up their own version of it, to the extent that I have gotten used to being called something very different than what my actual name is. I remember doing this to a friend's son without even being conscious of it. They were from Hungary and her son was named Tomas, (Toe-mass) and I called him Thomas until she brought it to my attention, asking why I did not call him by his actual name. I hadn't even realized I was doing it.
I wouldn't call it racism. It's all part of the integration process of other cultures. It will happen to a race until that race is integrated into another culture and people have become familiar with the names and their pronunciation. I am called Thomas and I lived in Italy and I was fine with them using the Italian pronunciation of my name as they struggled with the Anglicised version, I think it's normal.
Indeed they were changed. Their religion as well from what the tribe honored, respected and practiced to an Anglo religion always Christian, always with the seen and not hear, spare the rod spoil the child and other demoralizing beliefs and behaviors. The Heard Museum in Phoenix AZ has a lot of information on these practices and much of the tribal histories. I highly recommend it if you wish to know more about these horrible schools and their punishments etc.
Even in Mexico, Antonio becomes Tony, Javier becomes Javi, Alejandro becomes Alex, Barbara becomes Barbie, Sandra, Sandy, Margarita, Maggie, Eduardo, Eddie, etc
I do and don't see the big deal. It's your name, they shouldn't take that away from you. But some names are hard to pronounce. I lived in Japan a few years back and saying "Devin" was a bit of an awkward tongue struggle, so they just called me "de" or "de-chan" because it was easier for them to say. I didn't mind, and I thought it was kinda cool to have a new name in my new country.
The thing is, if a name is so hard to pronounce, they should ask if there’s something else to call you. They shouldn’t force a nickname on you. Edit before I forget,: Just because you don’t mind, doesn’t mean others shouldn’t mind.
@@MimikyuCookie Yup! I keep seeing comments like this. "I don't mind-" Okay? YOU don't mind. Not everyone should have to be okay with having the most basic part of their identity taken away.
Facundo... they didn't think of Frank or Phil? If Juanita become Jane, then it's not so much a stretch. Growing up I found it easier using an Americanized name, as my K teacher had noted at the time, than having people constantly attempting, mispronouncing my given name, and finally settling on their personalized or bastardized nicknames for me. Only got over such trivial matters in college when I accepted that that's how it was always going to be.
People still do this today, not because of prejudice or racism but because it is just easier and less of a haggle when being addressed. For example: the names 'Moses' and 'Moises' both come from the Hebrew word 'מֹשֶׁה'. so it would make more sense to use the name most commonly used by local language and vernacular.
Its a persons name. So basically your saying changing away a persons name is, is perfectly fine. I've seen people who talk English get upset over a wrong pronunciation and yet kids who have Mexican names or different names that are said differently are being called by americanized names that are not theirs. Its pretty stupid, honestly.
every country does this...so if this video is somehow trying to show that america was more racist or whatever, then it needs to show that every other country is racist as well for doing the same thing.
When in Rome do as the Romans do. If you go to a country and they can't pronounce your name there's nothing wrong with changing it to accommodate them. You're the one who wants to be in that country.
I work in a Pediatric Hospital. They change spanish names all the time excepto for one name everyone always pronounce in Spanish: JESÚS

And the issue with doctors and nurses being white?
Facundo Benito they lived in a time when non English names would be Anglicized which the majority would be done by White Americans
What's the song in the credits? And the second song with all the captions?

This is why I will tell my children to never EVER answer to the 'white' version of their name. If the teachers have a problem, give me a call.

And the second half of the name wasn't much better.
