    Australian tennis legend, Pat Cash, once said that the basics of the serve are, "You toss the ball up and give it a whack".

      @@changeisinevitable3040 you know nothing about tennis. It’s about weight transfer, upper body rotation, hand and wrist acceleration, pronation, continental grip, speed and top spin, first serve vs second serve, kick serve, hitting the top of the ball, hitting the ball at it’s apex, stretching out the left arm for stretch, balance, rotation,.trophy position, creating a sling shot effect, position of serve, not having a foot fault, accuracy, consistency, and deliberate use of placement and direction, the contact point, position of ball brushing on the strings, the pronation snap to the right .. what else don’t you know about serving?

      @@adedejiadesida5091 it can be simple, but you’ll only ever play at a simple level. If you really want to be a competitor with a highly competitive serve, then all the minute details need to be in place. But enjoy your simple level of tennis, nothing wrong with that either, as lone as you have fun.

    If I may: the weight transfer from the back foot to the front foot is also extremely important in creating velocity, and making it a smooth motion, so that the legs are involved, as well as the mid body and shoulders. The weight transfer takes some of the stress off of the upper body, allowing you to hit a very hard ball with a smooth motion.

      Please you are discussing a more advance technique.
      He is only dwelling on the basics.

    • @adamh7947
      @adamh7947 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@milkoansah-johnson8768 not really. He’s talking about making a comparison between throwing a ball and hitting a serve. In order to throw a ball you have to transfer weight from the back to the front. That is one of the most basic aspects of throwing. It doesn’t just come from the arm. The whole body makes the throw. It is the same with the tennis serve. I’m not faulting him. He is a world class coach. I’m just adding this for anyone who really wants to understand.

    • @Mogirl21

      The serve isn't a throwing motion and throwing a ball won't improve your serve.
      As you initiate the throw in baseball, the elbow will come to the side first and then it'll point forward before the ball is released. The position of the elbow on the serve is completely different from a throw. You toss the ball which will bring the non-dominant side above the dominant side so the elbow on the dominant side in most cases will be slightly low which you don't see on a throwing action. The elbow won't come forward, it'll go up towards the sky and then the arm straightens out into the contact.
      On the throw in baseball, the dominant shoulder is in front of the non-dominant shoulder before the ball is released. The dominant shoulder is never in front of the non-dominant shoulder on a serve. At the moment of contact on a serve, the dominant and non-dominant shoulders are parallel to each other, and the dominant shoulder is above the non-dominant shoulder.
      When you throw a ball there's a release of the wrist to get additional power which you don't want to do on a serve. You have to give the racquet stability, so you don't want to release the racquet as you would do in throwing a ball. On a serve, you have to have slight wrist extension at contact and slight ulnar deviation and is done to create stability at impact with the ball.

    Actually that setup is more for advanced players... No way you teach a player below 4.0 level perpendicular to the baseline on the deuce side, it should be at least 15-30 degrees open depending on your physiology... It can be more perpendicular from the ad side... Even good pros get this wrong all the time and wonder why their students can't serve.

    Don’t agree with this for the most part. Set up is right but racquet arm needs to be straighter going up and then needs to bend to get under the ball. You’re losing a ton of speed Patrick’s way. There’s a lot more to the biomechanics as you move up, through bended knees, up and through the ball, but racquet arm needs to be straighter, like a W.

      3. Rotational Momentum
      4. Vertical Momentum
