THANK YOU SO MUCH for such a perfectly detailed explanation! Finally had to replace the hatch mechanism on my 2012 with 286,000 miles. Paid $113 for the part, install took less than 1 hour after watching the video a couple of times. You saved me over $500 based on dealer estimate. The only difference is mine has what appears to be a counterweight located above the handle and over the passenger side outside bolt. It’s held on with 3 10mm bolts and was a breeze to remove/replace. Thanks again!

Just changed mine out. Many thanks on posting your video. It made my disassembly and reassembly a breeze! I would say the toughest part is getting the cable hooked back up but if you take your time it can be done.

Any tips for opening the boot at all? It's completely seized shut.

Wondering, yes handle corroded, but maybe the CABLE Housing have the spring to retract the latch, like a lawnmover starter recoil, or do you think there is a spring built-into the handle assembly you replaced ?? I have the exact same issue, VERY annoying !

Ok, let me give you my opinion, since the unit can be removed and replaced with a new one, I would not attempt to make a repair on the old pin. I have a lathe and material to manufacture a new pin and I chose to go the easy route and just replace the unit. The bonus feature is the new lights for illuminating license plate. Good Luck with your decision.

@@A_Renaissance_Man no, my question was not about repair, i was wndering if whatever makes the handle return position may be from the cable housing whuch the cable gies into from the handle and not maybe the issue is not the handle area, thats all. It dows seem logicsl if the pin is rusted, mousture also got into the little lever /connector that the cable clips tp, (yellow) . I did notice a small rubber boot there as well. I agree repair is likely just to save a little time, I think I found a salvage one which coincidentally appears that the XC90 has same fitment. Thanks for your post

My 2008 tail gate release has been giving me issues for the past couple of years. Thanks for the video ,I'm going to order the part today. On another topic, how hard would you think replacing the PIN only would be? I was thinking about 3D Printing one. Not sure how painful it is to remove / replace.

After examining the pin, and I have a lathe, I said to myself, the heck with that. The replacement was too easy and the cost was not that much for me.

May I recommend Volvo parts warehouse or Volvo wholesale parts. You can look up the part number and then use the part number to shop around. Every once and a while I can find the part on Amazon, ebay, or locally cheaper.

What a nightmare! Dealer want £240 to just find out what’s wrong and there a 100 mile away.. I have tried the oil spray fix but it won’t open still, the local garage wants to break the interior to see behind it and I can’t remove it Because the boot is stuck shut.
