Your videos are super relatable. Having quick sprints of work and then just… nothing for weeks. And the stress that brings when you feel lazy or like you’re not doing what you should be. Glad you’re coming out on the other side! Much love, Kev.
I do understand your troubles with motivation, and it is rather brave of you to make drastic changes to your living situation for the better and still staying strong. My idea for a character is a mole who molds clay to move around and sculpt the clay around them. I’m going to share this game to my friends. What you are doing gets a big thumbs up from me. 👍
Amazing that you were able to get out of that rut with a friend who helps inspire you! You both are amazing and I'm so excited for this game's full release. It's going to be great; cheers!!
I'm glad you got unstuck and hurray for that concept art for doing so. Thank you for sharing your experience. From past experience, I've found that motivation from an external source (in this case the environment art) is good for a boost but doesn't last forever. Great for a sprint but not a marathon. To get that day-to-day tempo of motivation requires building habits than come from a change in lifestyle, which I think you're doing too. I hope that change gives you the space to find your pace because if you were at the brink of burnout just before the art arrived, that boost isn't going to last long and you're more vulnerable to burnout now. Said with respect and kindness, best of luck!
You're 100% right, I've started working out and changing my diet in order to be healthier. Taking time to hang out with friends so my life isn't gamedev and sleep. Thanks Rob!
Got this crazy idea of a gnome with a purple and pink hat that want you find in odd places! Maybe he's made out of paper, and unlike all the other characters he's 2D so he's harder to find from certain angles 😉
Big awesome things take time brother! Seeing PaperKlay from the sidelines there has been SO much growth, I know it's hard to see since you're always in it. But, hope the break away helped and excited to see the next steps forward for you and the game!
I know the feeling. I ended up doing nothing for 6 months, which sucks. I like to call it my dev block - since it's basically a writer's block for game developers. I personally have three different types of productive projects - TH-cam videos, writing a book and game dev. If I ever feel burned out by one, I try to focus on a different one. This doesn't work for everyone, but it works for me, so I thought I'd share it.
Oh wow, yeah dev block is a good term! I tend to have multiple projects that I jump between and that's what I did in this case. But I should start some other hobby that I can jump to if needed :)
Hey, i Hope you are doing well, I'm Arya and i have subscibed you since your last video, i have very good expectation with your game, i just want to say don't keep it in middle, if you have started it then finish it, i am very interested in this game and i will buy it when it finally drops, and i know you can do it , can't wait for your next devlog!
Hello Arya, thank you so much for the encouragement! I can 100% confirm that I will finish PaperKlay :) It has changed everything for me and I have big hopes for it!
First things first. WOW - this looks so adorable and nice. if you didnt say so, i would NEVER believe this is a one man project. Second things second. Man, i saw the video of your earthship and you are or were kinda living my dream. Not a big fan of people and an earthship in the forest is something i've been dreaming of. Selfsustaining and self-employed / working remotly. thanks for showing this perspective! And whatever is troubling you driving you back into a city - you'll manage. Humans are fantasticly adapted to manage things. About the NPC idea - you're a chicken, you have enemies around hurting you, so, some kind of vendor - maybe a scarecrow? - selling you corn for a few of those button-things to replenish your health may be an interesting thought for bigger or harder levels. :)
Character Idea - A piece of clay made up of scraps of left over clay. It can portray any character in the game that it has seen by morphing into them in order to deceive you. Anyway I really like the progress you've made. I'm a motion designer whos been learning C# for Unity. So you are a big inspiration. Dont worry about being stuck. It happens to us all. I can really relate with many of my personal projects.
I like that idea! Will see what technical solutions I could make with that one :D Very kind William, hope it goes well with your progress! Being stuck comes and goes, it's just hard when you're there.
Welcome back to Malmo! Think it's even braver to realize what you needed is to go back to the city then to take the leap to go live in the woods. While it takes a lot of courage to take that step to move out at first, being honest to yourself and what you need is even harder. So lots of respect for that and good luck with the new demo
Thanks Alan, yeah it's better now. I kinda waited until I was feeling better to make this video. But for those that followed I wanted to make sure the timeline was adding up so wasn't all of a sudden back in the city without addressing it :)
The origami NPC thing sounds like a great idea. I feel you, at least I think so. I've been making a 3D platformer called PB & Jay for over 2 years now off and on. I recently decided to scrap all the worlds as stuff because, get this, there wasn't much platforming in the "3D platformer". I know right! Weird that I see that now after getting some feedback, but yeah. I feel like sharing your work with the internet is a boost for sure, but sharing with people in person is the real booster, at least for me. As for burnout, you got to set a schedule and do other things with your time I've found. I've got school and stuff so I keep busy mostly, but you need time to chill every now and then. :)
Hehe yeah I felt that feedback as well where the demo could've had more platforms for.. jumping you know?! :D Yeah I've got a schedule now which feels better
I love your devlogs. Your game is great and I hope you feel better soon to work on it! Nothing wrong with taking a break. We all need it sometimes💜💙 if you don't have a bunny in your game yet, every cute game needs a bunny! In mario 3D world you have to actually catch it to receive a green star😊
I'd suggest maybe having some of red thread for character creation so that they feel organic as opposed to random. Perhaps take inspiration from the farm as we follow a chicken, and don't just stop at the animals, a Scarecrow or a watering can called Leaky could work
I was going to ask how you will manage a house in the woods, solar-powered in the Scandinavian winter without much sun. Best of luck with the transition and take one thing at a time! Clay and paper characters got me thinking of reversing the presentation. Having a living clay cup made of paper and a talking paper plane made of clay. It could be funny, as the cup could not hold any liquid without it running through the paper and the paper plane could not fly since it is too heavy. But it won't work if you would rather have actual living creatures and not things.
Hello, looking great. Have a question do you model your game assets by yourself or do you get them from asset store. I myself am working on a game. Good luck))
I’m using blender as well. Your main character animation you do in blender and then import into Unity for coding the movement? Good job on the player controller. I’m guessing your grass is procedural?
@@WhyKev I have no experience with game dev. So I’m starting from scratch, you have a lot more progress than I do after three months of work. I only got basic movement and a few game assets modeled))

Glad to hear I'm not alone in this!
Game’s graphics look incredible, the art is on a whole other level
Hey thank you! That means a lot, art is my biggest insecurity so this is amazing!
Holy fucking shit the production value of this hahaha
Start is like a documentary, very home-made though but still :D

Very true Joe! Yeah in a way I think it helped me understand what the game should be instead of just going in that direction it was going.
It's very relatable to get stuck by losing motivation. In these weeks I produce some dance music and come back with a fresh mind.
That sounds like a nice thing! :)
first step is to aknowledging the struggle, analysing it, keep up the passion bro
That's so true, thanks a lot man!

You know those books we had as kids where figures would stand up as you turn a page? Something to think about, could be traps that pop up or something
ooh that's actually a plan I have :D Popup Forest!
A cat made out of yarn and maybe it has a ball of yarn stuck to it and keeps playing with it. That would be cool imo
Oh I love that idea! Sounds like a fun character.
Great devlog mate! Think you spoke about this difficult topic of overworking / feeling burnout quite well. Interested to see what happens next!
Thank you Saul, can't wait to make more progress on the game :)

Thank you so much :) I told myself that I didn't want to sit there in 10 years and regret not trying this lifestyle. So I'm glad I tried.
I tried your demo the other day and it's pretty sweet already, gl for the next step!
Thanks for taking your time to play it! :)
Imma check out the demo! I’m rooting for you bro!
Please do, I hope you have fun Jefry! :D
Sometimes stepping back and destroying is a good thing. It's helps tho have good contacted that cash give a new perspective.

That camera movement in your game is spectacular!
Whoa, you lived in the woods? That's so fascinating!
Also, dat concept art!!!!! 😍😍😍😍😍😍
haha I sure did :D

haha that's quite funny! I've thought of having a piece of paper as an NPC.. just lying flat on the ground :D
Making games solo is hard! I was close to quitting working on my game more than once. Your game looks good though, keep it up!
Thank you so much! Glad to see your game is close to release! :)
I just hope you're okay bro! ❤
I am now, had to wait to make this video until I felt better ❤
Its okey to not work on a project for a while
Yeah that's true! Felt like a small break to me.
Same here xD working in a team helps :)
Yeah at least bounce ideas with someone can really help
You got this.
Thanks for the support!

That's a great idea!
New devlog when?
I have it somewhat written but been going through some life changes. Going to make it first half of January to explain what's been going on :)
First. Lol btw great devlog,😆
haha Indeed! I will try to remember this for a long time :D Thank you!
