Basically Canyon recommends exactly this process in their "How to service the seat post", but they are not doing a very good job in their video to explain the process thoroughly and the manual isn't explaining it very well either. The maintenance around this issue is way above what a consumer generally expects and is able to do on their own.
In my opinion the creaking occurs when there is too much play involved, which is exaggereted by heavy riders and high seating positions (more force). So the goal is to eliminate the play in and around the clamping area, which is done via the carbon paste (increases friction, reduces movement). But the process of getting the paste at the correct spot with the toothbrush without getting it all over isn't trivial.
The grease around the sleave accomplishes to weather tighten the seal, but I don't think it helps with the creaking issue, it's more about increasing the lifespan of the seal and plastic.
The design is bad because they are just using one screw instead of two to clamp (same with the steering tube), which just from an engineering standpoint will make it harder for the seat post to stay firmly in place. There is no way that 5Nm is enough force to clamp the seatpost without carbon gripper. Now they are using the sleave + carbon gripper from the factory, but it's just not a permanent solution, since due to weather etc. the gripper paste will deteriorate. Also it heavily discourages changing seat positions and removing the seatpost to transport the bike in your car, which is terrible for the general consumer.
I'm ashamed that "German engineering" resulted in a design like this. I'm not sure how a design like this made it all the way into production, but I can see why: it looks GREAT in CAD, because the design is very lean/leightweight/aero, just all the buzzwords from the last few years.
I bought this bike 2 months ago and would return it if I could, because I'm 100% sure that it will always be a "problem bike" due to untested proprietary designs like the seatpost and steerer.
I also don't understand how the bike has 4.5/5 stars in reviews on the german shop, because everyone has these problems eventually, it should have reviews around 3/5 stars at max. I want to write a detailed review about all the issues this bike has, because people that buy it should know before what they are getting themselves into. I would not recommend this bike to anyone that does not have a firm background in repairing and servicing bikes, because you will be left on your own.

I agree with you on all points and thanks for commenting. I feel like Canyon videos are difficult to understand because they don't explain the process. I made this one to show others and explain the thoughts behind it.

Thank you. I'm a tall and heavy rider at almost 90kg and not a very good mechanic. I can change a chain, brakes and some screws and service my gears, but not a skilled mechanic.
I don't think I'll buy it. I don't understand Canyon's approach. The support told me there is still a problem and they are working on fixing the seat post, still advise me to buy the bike lol.
Tho it's a very beautiful bike.

I had the creaking problem too. Canyon sent me 2 spare bikes but always the same problem later I heard that many people fixed the problem with electrical tape. But I sent both bikes back because I don't see that Canyon can't fix the problem and we as customers look stupid. Now I ride a Cervelo S 5 that doesn't make any noise.

Hi Paul. Yours was one of the most comprehensive videos on youtube for diagnosing the seatpost creak issue that I too was experiencing on my Aeroad CFR. I tried everything recommended here and on forums like Weight Weenies and nothing resolved it. After a lengthy period of diagnostics and testing, cursing and lateral thought I finally discovered the issue with my bike and wanted to note in here in case it proves useful for others. The issue for me was the plastic insert that slides into the frame (that the seatpost slides into) - this insert had not been glued sufficiently at the factory and accordingly was moving just a little to the left and right and it was this movement that was causing my creak on every pedal stroke as my body weight shifted even slightly as I pedaled. I checked with Canyon and they said they would organise to ship the bike back to them to fix. But I didn’t want to be without the bike for up to 2 weeks. So I went to my local hardware store and bought a tube of 2-part epoxy specifically made for plastics. The brand I chose was Loctite and should be available worldwide. I squeezed the plastic insert as much as I could to create a gap between it and the frame and then carefully poured some of the epoxy into the gap and then clamped it overnight. I then installed the seatpost the next day and I have not had a single creak or sound since then and it has been over 3 weeks of riding over rough roads, smooth roads, traintracks etc. Hope this information helps others in the same predicament. Thank you

I saw your previous video on the seat post creak. I took my Pinerello F5 with the same exact issue. I contacted Pinerello And they told me to take it to the place I purchased it so they can diagnose. they also made it clear that if you just purchased your bike, and you do damage do it trying to fix it on your own it will void the lifetime frame warranty. so forewarning to those of you with a new carbon fibre bike. So, I took it in, He removed all the paste, reset the seat post in place, and viola! It works perfect without creaking! I guess I was a fortunate one.

Paul, I appreciate your detailed approach to the video. I’m a little surprised to see you agree with the comment about how awful the bike is when you’re clearly in love with it in the video. I love mine…she climbs, is comfortable, and holds 20+ in the flats. Only aero design that beats it is the S5. Your video helped me fix my creaks, so thank you. I’m 5’8” 170lbs riding an XS, so the seat is nearly maxed. In my opinion it is indeed the lube up top, not just the friction paste down low. Curious to know if you have a recommendation on travel bag/box for the aeroad…smallest possible. Cheers, and happing riding.

Thanks Paul, this content has been great. I've subscribed specifically to follow your journey with this bike. Kudos on making TH-cam a more productive space! I ride a cervelo soloist with an aero seat tube from 2006 that was my main race bike. Not one creak ever. Seems like something that didn't need to be re engineered. Seat clamps work and there's no way the aero penalty is even worth mentioning.

One thought regarding this seatpost issue.
This is a wide existing problem, a fail design. On TH-cam, there are fixes like one's on this video, others have used electric tape on front/rear of the seatpost. They may work for good or one needs to do fixes every now and then (I expect latter). And don't forget bendings on the seatpost from clamping mechanism.
What every Aeroad owner with this seatpost problem should do, you should return the bike and get your money back. Because when you guys keep those bikes, for Canyon it means they can continue designing complicated bikes without outside testing (if they rode a few of those > 500 km outside, they'd very likely discovered the problem and went back to drawing board). Now Canyon thinks they can recommend fixes like bublegum on upcoming design fails and people go with that.

This is indeed the proper way, which I found out only after the damage was done.... My bike was delivered in full white grease even on top of the seatpost entrance and on the Frame!!! I inserted the seatpost, and because of the amount of white grease the clamp was to slippy so after the first ride already the seatpost moved down a number of times. When I got home I pulled everything out and the seatpost was already damaged... After a solid cleaning of the complete saddle post tube, and adding paste with a small brush all was fixed. Unfortunately still after 1000 KM I pulled out the seatpost again and noticed that there was some really bad damage of the painting of the seatpost.... I contacted Canyon and i'm currently in the process of getting a new seatpost installed but unfortunately the rubber sleeves are out of stock..
To be quite honest, the bike rides magnificent! but this seatpost design is not what I would expect from a German engineerd product. (There is nothing about German Quality in this product...) I've been riding my Specialized SL3 for almost 10 years and that seatpost still looks better then the one from Canyon after 1000KM's.
I wonder how many seatpost I will need to replace in a timespan of 6 years for this Aearood as Canyon advised to cleanout the seatpost just as done in this video after every rainy/muddy ride or every 1000 dry km's.... unfortunately this is not a joke....

Thank your for making this video. I’ve had my Aeroad CFR for about 6 weeks and 700 miles on it. A couple of days ago during a ride the seat post dropped down in the middle of a ride. Got home and screw was properly torqued to 5NM. I have not experienced any creaking issues yet. Looking inside the seat tube I only see white crease all over. I have been adjusting the seat height many times to get it dialed in, maybe that wore off the carbon paste causing it to loose grip? Going to contact Canyon and see what they tell me.

Hiya Paul, have the very same bike with SRAM Force. Had the noise after 40 days. Followed the Canyon process with one added step. Placed a slight load to the seat and post (Toward the back) to simulate a rider and at the same time tightened nut to spec. Two more weeks no noise. However, once I watched your post I repeated adding the carbon paste only to bolt head. One other note, when I got the bike I just couldn’t get use to the flashy Zipp decals on the rims so pealed them off and the weight savings and speed increase (Mentally) is awesome 😎 Won’t go back to the white decals but may consider some Matt black ones later. Have had BMC Team Machine SLR, Cervelo R5, Specialized Tarmac, Pinnarello, Giant, etc…and this Canyon is Soooo much better. If one drawback…the front end is a bit twitchy. BTW, before I bought the bike Canyon told me they had sorted the seat post and bar issues from previous. Curious if all the 2021 outlet bikes are returns for creaking? Anyway, thanks for the videos. Watched your unboxing prior to purchase and don’t regret the purchase at all.

On canyon supplied grease it lasted 800 miles then creaked (grease probably thickened as may have dried in transit) it got to 35c in England and probably slumped, cleaned as per video grease was thin now 400 miles same, cleaned 10 mile same, noted slight scuff marks just below sleeve. Tried tape on front edge and rear of post, silent for 150 miles then it rucked up at rear and started creaking so that is not a solution. Now on new thicker grease (Muc Off Bio) put plenty on and at rear below sleeve as post rear protrudes (on 8 fully up it is flush on 6.5 it is 1.5 cm below) seems ok for now.

The seatpost has a very big mistake. that cut section is the problem. if it was one piece, perfect no problems at all. so the solition for canyon is easy. New seat post with no cut section, it eleminates the possibility to backward and forward movement. Or, I would use a better way. Use carbon epoxy resin but very thin layer only at the front, leave it for a few days or even a week to cure. It is a cheap solution for Canyon and safe. parmanent fix no slips or creaks.

Great videos so far Paul. I appreciate you making these since it’s an issue plaguing so many new canyon riders. I started experiencing the same seat tube creakiness. I used the paste and the grease supplied by canyon. But ran out of the paste. I’m still waiting to hear back from canyon about what kind of paste I should use after I finished mine. Was wondering if canyon reached out to you and let you know what kind of paste to order? Thanks

Jose, Canyon US representative recommends Finish Line paste and Finish Line white silicone grease.

The white paste is some kind of silicone paste. I work with canyon daily and repairing this issue. As he said in the video: thin part carbon paste, thick part -> some kind of silicone, parktool grease or machine grease

This is hilarious. I cannot imagine myself doing this kind of effort to remedy some obvious design defect. I have old areoad 2018 model and I simply ride on it without any hussle. I wanted to buy a new one to have more tires clearance but I'm so hesitant now. I expect that when you go for top spec bike you simply should be riding on it flawlessly without the problems of this kind. I just wait for some other alternative solutions like put olive oil or some chewing gum and all will work perfect. Canyon you can do better then this!

Canyon need a better solution than having to re-grease the seatpost area every couple of rides. Totally insane! Too much flexibility/leverage between the seatpost and the frame and also the distance the clamp mechanism is located from the top of the frame. The constant rocking back and forth will cause anything to creak. The one clamp mechanism made the design even worse. That's and insult and totally unacceptable having to perform maintenence on a seatpost so often.
Customers like myself who owned the bike past 30 days are considering some type of class action lawsuit against Canyon. This is obviously a design flaw and myself or any other customer shouldn't be stuck with this bike with such an obvious design flaw in which Canyon is highly aware of and they also claimed it was fixed.

How much as something like this affected resale values of Aeroads? I know you don’t buy a bike with resale value purely in mind but I usually put the deposit on my next bike by selling my current one for as much as possible. No way would I buy a secondhand Aeroad unless I’m paying way way under what people even think it’s worth. The fact canyon are still letting this shoddy design out of the door just shows they think we are all idiots.

    • @paulbonner8874
      @paulbonner8874  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

While I am not thinking about resale, I understand your point. And I think a 2nd hand Aeroad is always going to be a tricky purchase. But I also think that this "design" is not the major issue (as the bike is amazingly comfortably due to the seatpost flex) but to me the application of the the grease and paste means that the original manufacturing is being rushed to get the bikes out the door. If Canyon took more time to properly setup and explain how you need to be so meticulous in installing your seatpost, they wouldn't have as many issues.

@@paulbonner8874 it just reeks of what’s rife in the bike industry at the moment. No QC, badly designed and manufactured. Look at the amount of BB standards there are, all to try and combat something inherent but also introduced just as many issues.
Do you think they’ve sorted the handlebars? What’s the steerer/stem interface like? That just seems another area where an issue could arise.

    • @paulbonner8874
      @paulbonner8874  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I agree on BBs. Way to many for those of us that keep bikes for more than 2 years at a time.
The handelbars are great. I don't feel any issues with flex. I do have them at the closest setting. I have taken out 10mm spacer and it was a little time consuming but still worked perfect in the end and the steerer never goes out of alignment.

This is friggin ridiculous! It’s a 6k bike! You shouldn’t have to manage a creak like this. More maintenance then a full susp mtb. Canyon isn’t going to fix the problem when people keep temporally fixing it. Also this may fix it for a week, month , year… what about 3 years from now when it’s to the point it can’t be stopped. Now you have a bike you can’t sell and can’t stand to ride. Don’t understand it
