  • After preparing this video I saw information that the section could be named Densiflora but I think this is an older name. Both of these species need a fast draining mix and a cool, dry winter rest is necessary to bloom.

    Hi Wade. I’m a windowsill grower in MI and I have added lights. I get my catts to bloom, phals, latouria and formosae dens, oncidium types, and zygos. I’m taking one last shot at the few callistas that I have; two aggregatum, a chrystotoxum , and a new farmeri. I put a light out in my garage, but it’s been in the 40’s out there this week. I think it’s going to be too cold the rest of the winter and will have to bring them back in and figure out a cool spot and put them under a light. My question is really about water. Do you only occasionally mist yours through the winter months? I’ve read “no water at all Halloween to Easter”. I would appreciate hearing your opinion. Thank you.

    Hi Wade, i live in Canada, I have a den crepidatum, den loddgiseii and den aggregatum for years and was not able to get them to bloom. I’m just wondering when should I restart watering them after the winter rest. Do I wait until i see the flower spike first or should I restart watering now since the weather is starting to warm up. Thanks.

    It's odd...mine flowered 2 years ago with 2 beautiful spikes. This past winter it got the same cold and dry conditions, but did NOT flower. I'm wondering if I didn't give it enough fertilizer the previous summer or waited too long to water it. So what is considered Heavy fertilizer for this dendrobium and I suppose for others like nobiles? I've probably been light on the fertilizer but it's still warmish now so maybe I can still fertilize...say until mid October?
    On a side note, my Den. jenkinsii flowered in May, but with just a few flowers.
    Great videos always. Wish I could buy your healthy plants but I'm in Canada.

      I'd say to cut the fertilizer when the daytime temps stay less than 80. I add a bit of time release fertilizer in the spring. This is in addition to the liquid fertilizer that everything gets. Also, I do water lightly about every 2 weeks or so (mine are in clay pots so any moisture is evaporated quickly).

    Hey Wade, greetings from New Orleans. I am leaving these outside 24/7 in New Orleans and only covering them if there's a threat for frost. I feel that the climate here has the temperature and humidity right, but I get rain at least once or twice a week. Heavy soaks. Will this interrupt them from flowering correctly?

    • @wadesorchids7219
      @wadesorchids7219  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't guarantee that it would keep them from flowering but there is a good possibility of it. More likely it will rot them. When it's below 55F or so the root's ability to absorb water is limited. If there's someplace that you can put them so they will be protected from the rain you should have good success.

      Wade's Orchids Thank you for the reply. I think I may repot these into a faster draining medium, also take them out of the plastic pot and put them into a clay pot.
      I have one plant of the same species that I am attempting to put into the semi-hydroponic method with LECA pellets. There's no fertilizer right now. So I will report back in a few months.

    Hi Wade, in Oder to get your plants to bloom like that do they need cool days and nights in the resting phase? And how cool do you keep them in the resting period and for how long?

    • @wadesorchids7219

    Hello, I acquired a Den Aggregatum last summer at a store, it had snails badly... and I kinda had to hack the roots off just to be safe. It rather quickly grew more roots and more pseudobulbs. During winter it became a game of chicken where I kept it dry with abit of spritzing but it began to become wobbly, just today I decided to take a look and all of it's roots were dead. However, the newest bulbs from summer are all shooting out oodles and oodles of new roots. Is this a trait or is this just a weird case of me 'fiddling' too much. Lastly, is there any way to know if you performed the winter rest correctly? I'd be so frustrated it if didn't bloom. It is a fairly large orchid 10+ bulbs (It grew probably around 3 in my care, a very robust grower)

    • @wadesorchids7219
      @wadesorchids7219  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It sounds like all is not lost. Aggregatum does everything "all at once". I think you did the right thing to take care of the snails. Usually I pot these in clay pots to help them to dry quickly. The new roots is a very good sign but I don't start watering until new growth is forming leaves. You could mist the media from time to time until then but thorough watering is not good for it yet. As far as knowing if you did the winter rest correctly, the only answer is that if it flowers and you get good growth in spring you did well. Best of luck!!

    I have a den aggregatum and I think I over watered it. The roots are whiteish and I failed to give it much sun during the winter. I was more concerned about humidity since I live in Utah. So I set up a indoor greenhouse with a cool mist humidifier in it and a fan blowing on it. But I had it planted in a plastic pot with orchid bark Spagnum moss and perlite mixture. Now I’m thinking about mounting it. Can you do a tutorial on mounting? And can you also show us the condition of the bulbs? I’d like to be able to compare mine with yours to make sure I’m doing OK. I have a bout 10 bulbs on mine and the roots are pretty long. But two of the bulbs were in the pot under some Spagnum is a little too long I think and they’ve turned yellow. Should I cut them off? Sorry for all the questions but I really want to do a good job. I did post the question a while ago but never got an answer. I hope you answer this one. Thank you

    • @wadesorchids7219
      @wadesorchids7219  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think Den. aggregatum would do very well mounted if you can keep the humidity above 60%. Also, remember that they need cool temps during winter. You can trim the yellow bulbs. As with any orchid that needs a rest period, the time for repotting or mounting is just before it resumes actively growing.

    I just bought a Den. aggregatum this weekend. It’s going to be a challenge for me to mine to bloom. I’m only able to get my grow space in the 70’s at the moment. I might have to relocate it to my basement to get the temperature low enough to bloom. Is the low 70’s to high for bloom production?

    • @wadesorchids7219
      @wadesorchids7219  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Here is one of the cases where you have to think outside of the box. You need to have a night temperature into the 50s. Find a bright window and put it against it. It would be nice to have a humidity tray because most homes have very low humidity in the winter. Misting is fine but only water after the roots have been dry for a week. Feel free to call me if you like, and good luck!!

      @wadesorchids7219  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Julia. There are so many variables that I can’t be sure. First, take it out of the pot and examine the roots. If it’s staying wet you might have rotted the roots. These like to be watered when in active growth but need to dry fairly well between waterings. If the roots are bad the plant may die. If the roots are ok then repot with fresh media and treat it as you would during dormancy. It might come around. Best of luck.

      These species like to be a bit pot bound. As long as the potting media is in good shape I wouldn't repot it until it is ready to grow out of the pot. If you do repot it make sure that the media is very free draining. It should be dry 2 - 3 days after watering. To make it drain better add stones, lava rock or large perlite to the mix.

    Hi Wade. Thank you for the explanation. I just bought a Dendrobium Memoria Christa Erdmann (Dendrobium griffithianum x farmeri). It is currently inside my apartment, which is low in humidity. I usually water weekly. My question is, how much water should I give it during winter? The outside temperature is minus to 7 degrees celcius now outside. Around 17 - 20 celcius inside. And for a comparison, I halved the amount of water to my phalaenopsis. However, I still give the same amount of water to the lautorias, else they will shrivel. Any suggestion is appreciated. I never had a den from the callista section before. Thank you.

      Beatrix Ariane my theory is that whenever a plant is given water it should be thorough. I’m thinking every 2-3 weeks for your plant. It should be given good light and humidity during this period. If the canes begin to shrivel water a bit more. Keep this practice until new growth is producing roots. Good luck!!!!

    The big failing of the Callista Dendrobiums is their relatively short lived flowers and inflorescences. (Their specialized temperature requirements for inflorescence initiation are also a problem for those with warm nightime temperatures year round.) They last less than 3 weeks, even under optimal conditions, and 2 to 2 1/2 weeks are more typical. Most popular epiphytic orchids have much longer lasting blooms/inflorescences!
    All that I've bloomed (D. aggregatum, D. densiflorum, D. thyrsiflorum) have been fragrant, but the fragrance isn't especially good; it reminds me somewhat of cooked Rhubarb pie filling.
    Dendrobium densiflorum is my great favorite of the Callistas; I love yellow and yellow/orange blooms, and densiflorum tends to have the tightest (but not cluttered or crowded), most neatly formed infloresence of this group. It was a common sight at or past its' prime (those short lived inflorescences!) at spring orchid shows in the mainland US during the 1970s and 1980s. Most of these were imported collected plants (mainly from India), and unfortunately, no commercial US grower made a long term attempt at maintaining and 'improving' selected seed grown strains of this species. Now, they are generally much harder to obtain, and the price for the few that are offered for sale has skyrocketed.
