- Below, is a list of some sections I have encountered with some examples of species. That is VERY FAR from exhaustive
One website to check which section the Dendrobium belongs to is
www.orchidspecies.com/
The book is
Orchids species culture - Dendrobiums by Baker and Baker - Timber press
The website to buy culture sheets by the piece for $1 is:
www.orchidculture.com/
====================================================
Some sections I have encountered:
Section Callista: needs extended dry rest in winter to bloom properly. Medium bright light. Will take low temperatures at night.
lindlyei (syn. aggregatum), thyrsiflorum, jenkensii, chrysotoxum etc...
Section Spatulata (Antelope): no rest, plenty of water year-round, cold intolerant, high light
Spatulata from New-Guinea: antennatum, gouldii, stratiotes, stebloceras, tangerinum, lasianthera, lineale, mirbelianum, sylvanum, violaceoflavens etc...
Spatulata from Australia: canaliculatum, carronnii, undulatum (also called discolor) affine, bigibbum, phalaenopsis etc...
Hybrids usually sold in this section in the US.
Section Latouria: easy care, no rest, moderate watering, high light, can take low temperatures
atroviolaceum, normanbyense etc... Mostly hybrids sold in the US.
Section Dendrobium: extensive dry rest
anosmum, friedericksianum, unicum and many more
Section Breviflores: strong reduction of watering in winter, medium light
hercoglossum, linguella etc...
Section Calcarifera:
amethystoglossum, Victoria-Regina etc...
Section Pedilonum:
bullenianum, goldschmidtianum etc....
Section Dendrocoryne (Australian hard canes): extensive dry rest and low temperatures in winter needed for proper flowering

Thank you so much for this info. I have a Den. unicum and its struggling so I will definitely be looking at these culture sheets. Your catasetums are always so beautiful! My SVO ctsm. Tommy Bednar has just opened and WOW! SVO sells amazing orchids. Merry Christmas..
I have killed a Den. unicum. Not easy to grow. I believe it needs very little water from November till March and fairly high light. Good luck ! I hope you will be more successful than me.
It is a gorgeous flower!
Yeah Ctsm. Tommy Bednar is spectacular and SVO does sell amazing orchids! Catasetums are wonderful plants
Merry Christmas!
Excellent video - very helpful. Would you do a video walking us around your growing areas and telling us how & why you’ve organized it as you have, please. It looks so fantastic but each time we only get to see small sections as background. I’d love to see it all please. Maybe will give your viewers some ideas they might borrow from you about setting up & mainaging their own collections. 😍
There is a video on how I display my mounted orchids which shows a lot of my collection although I keep on improving my area constantly and it has changed quite a bit since.
Also, I move plants around during the year based on sun exposure, needs for dormancy (all Catasetums) etc.... So it is a bit difficult to explain all that.
This is the video I am referring to.

Just love your channel. Particularly this video, It's really informative and includes lots of basic information about dendro. I have the aggregatum for 3+ plus years and haven’t seen any blooms 🥹
❤❤
Regarding aggregatum (now called lindleyi): do you give it 3 or more months of rest?
Also, where do you live? Do you have a drop of temperatures at night over the winter or are you in the tropics? If your nights are warm year-round, you may not be able to make it bloom????
You rock! Keep these coming. Amazing!
Thank you! There are 94 before this one. Feel free to subscribe....they will keep on coming LOL.
Very reassuring, thank you..😊 My very first orchid was a dendrobium and I've been growing them just by intuition and observation with very little time for research up till now. It's good to know I've not been a complete idiot with them..😄 I haven't killed any so far and apart from blooming issues (which I'm working on) they seem to be doing ok
It means you have great observation skills!
Close Observation of your orchids is the number ONE reason for success!
@@orchidhouse aawww.. thank you! 😊 I'm encouraged!
Great video Olivier ! Love your orchid collection in the background ! Seasons Greetings !
Thank you Alexandra! Greetings to the Cayman islands and Happy New Year 2024!
@@orchidhouse Happy New Year to you too ! Won’t be attending Tamiami in January but hope to see you in May for Redlands…..
I plan on attending both :)@@alexandragc6817
Feliz Navidad Marian!
7.25 - I love that orchids
The name is Dendrobium Little Green Apples (Den. Green Elf x Den. convolutum)
Great vid. After research, I've rebloomed 3 of my den phals. They all have new growth but most older canes have dropped.
My den aggeratiums are thriving and have taken colder weather without much incident.
My den nobiles are thriving in the colder weather.
I monitor the. That's what's happening with my dens in zone 8a. I tappered off with water as the weather cooled off and only sprinkle a bit of water on them @ present, if the canes look excessively shrivled. All of this has worked for me with my dens, thus far.
Once the last cold snap passes in my zone, I'll start fertilizing then and see what happens with last years new cane growth.
For some reason I seen the different groups of dens like I see clementis vines. Clementis are in 3 groups & each group has its own growth habits.
Thank you for all that valuable information on growing Dendrobium, section Dendrobium in zone 8c.
Aggregatum will take near frost!
@@orchidhouse Love your channel. You give very informative info. Thanks.
Much appreciated! That's my only goal! @@terriewilliams8831

Merci! Amitiés à Sarasota!
Wow another great informative video ❤
Thank you :))
Thank you for sharing Marry Christmas
Merry Christmas 🎁🎄
Your videos are always a pleasure to watch. I do have many dendrobiums in my collection. This year I did some research and have labeled those which need a winter rest. I read the culture information about temps, etc., but with climate change that we've been experiencing how reliable are those specs? (I've added a "mule-eared oncidium recently. Do you have one of those?} May you have a nice holiday with your family and friends.
Thank you Pat!
Those spec sheets are just an indication. They don't need to be perfectly accurate to give you a good idea on how to care for the plant. Some of those plants have a huge geographical distribution and will encounter much more diverse conditions that the table lets you believe.
I will add a mule-ear video soon. I am expecting blooms on a mule ear. They are tricky to grow as they rot quickly. You MUST let them dry out between each watering. I have started using tree fern fiber on them, so far with outstanding results. Try it.
Enjoy your Holidays too :))
😊👍
Hello olivier do you no can you add dry eggshells and charcoal to tree fern fiber thank you
I do not believe that to be necessary. Tree fern fiber has draining quality that are exceptional. Charcoal might be useful for a plant that you fertilize heavily but from what i heard, tree fern fiber does not need anything added to the mix. You can always try though.
Thank you so much for this video I learn a lot😊, I have no success in growing summer blooming phal. I try just about everything less water more water, light. I just don’t know what I’m doing wrong maybe you can help, thanks
Summer blooming Phals bloom because of extra day length (light exposure) and heat. If they don't bloom, may be you live in area which is too cold or may be your plants are grown indoors and they don't get enough light??? Just a guess??
Water should have little to do with blooming.
I’m sorry I forgot to mention I live in Clearwater lol
Then they should be happy in the summer if you grow them outdoors? What exactly is not working besides blooming?@@yolantalachance2779
@@orchidhouse the orchids never bloom some have spikes
Is it Phal. tetraspis? I have that issue too although they end up blooming but they take their sweet time...@@yolantalachance2779
My Dendrobium only bloom in spring time
What is the name of the Dendrobium?
