A fingerstool is a must for Tig welding which absorbs the heat and allows firm control over the direction of metal. 20mm Pipe welding at a 45 degree angle with root fillers and cap will wreck anyones wrist.

First of all, your welds are just as they should be..you're a professional. ;)
I always taught my apprentices to clean their workpieces before welding. I know in the world of today time is money and it has got to be fast and cheap. However, a good weld always requires some preparation, especially TIG or MMA.
You showed what happens when it's just welded away. A lot of slag will form due to the mill scale and impurities in it which melt and flow on top of the weld puddle.

  • @GAIS414
    @GAIS414 ปีที่แล้ว +5

On the contrary, that is the very first thing you learn from a professional TIG welder. Prep, clean, then clean some more, repeat and then maybe you get to lay a bead that most probably will look like burnt chicken shit anyway. Unless you have mastered all the other hundreds of variables and techniques involved to get something even remotely resembling the clean bead in this video.
For all the amateurs out there interested in getting into TIG welding because you've seen some weld porn on TH-cam or Instagram. What these porn producers wont tell you about TIG welding, is as follows. (and I've explained this to a handful of friends over the years who caught the TIG welding bug and was about to run out to buy their first starter rig.)
Provided that you already have access to an insured, relatively weld safe workshop where you have enough power and permission to store large high pressure gas bottles.
    You will need.
A sturdy metal worksurface to weld on (tin clad wood will burn and smolder for hours if not days).
An angle grinder with a decent selection of discs for cutting and grinding.
    A fire extinguisher.
    Protective closed leather boots.
Protective clothing made from natural fiber, wool or leather
(Most synthetic materials will burn so fast you have little to no time to react. Especially when your vision is limited by a welding hood.)
(Synthetic fabrics are basically low density plastic which will burn, melt and stick permanently to your skin resulting in severe burns and hospital bills.)
Now you can go out and buy the most basic Chinese TIG setup you can get. Apart from the initial cost of the $500 welder, you need to buy (or rent) an argon gas bottle, pay for filling it, Buy a gas regulator, fittings and hoses. Buy a decent welding hood (don't waste your time trying to use the one they might include with the machine for free). Buy electrodes and filler rods for the different materials you wish to be able to weld and so on. That should set you back about $1000 in total.
However, if you want some kind of quality product where you don't have to curse the machine and all the cheap components on a regular basis, you can look forward to spending $2000 and upwards on your setup. Believe me, learning to TIG weld is difficult enough without having to second guess your equipment. And if you want the option to weld aluminium you will have to spend yet another $1000 dollars just upgrading from a DC to an AC/DC machine. Also if you care about your long term health and want to avoid slowly getting poisoned by toxic, cancerous smoke and gasses you might want to consider buying a welding hood with a forced air respirator (gas mask), that is at least another $700 and upwards, plus the added joy of buying and replacing filters and charging batteries on a regular basis. Even though expensive, respirator hoods are well worth it because you will spend long hours exposing yourself to the fumes while training before you can even hope to produce a half decent weld. Getting a decent respirator hood is a good idea for the other processes as well, but especially with TIG because you basically don't have the option of working outdoors, or in a well ventilated room, because of shielding gas coverage issues. If the nozzle experiences the smallest amount of wind or moving air it will ruin your weld completely and foul and/or burn your electrode as well. MIG welding basically has the same problem (since it's also gas shielded) but is a bit less sensitive to wind, and you can also choose to use a flux core wire which gives you more or less complete freedom to work outdoors in most cases, which of course limits the risks of inhaling the toxic fumes. As they say, "very few welders get to see old age".
TIG welding is by far the most time consuming and expensive of all the common welding processes. Not to mention the hundreds upon hundreds of hours you need to spend training before you can produce something even remotely close to what this guy does on ordinary black steel (carbon steel). Good results on aluminium and stainless is at least another couple of hundred hours. If you care the least about the results, prep, cleaning and setup takes up at least 75% of the time if you are welding regular black steel. But will take up closer to 90% of the time when welding stainless, aluminium or even more exotic materials. The material must be completely free from mill scale, rust, oil and other contaminants and then thoroughly cleaned with pure acetone. Less pure acetone or brake cleaner might contain chlorine which will produce deadly chlorine gas when burned.
And now, what probably got you exited with TIG welding in the first place, those perfectly rainbow colored weaves or stacks of dimes will put your budget upwards of at least $5000 and you will have to spend thousands of hours studying how to weld and manage heat spread in stainless steel to perfection in order to achieve that. If you ever get to that point you are now in the top 20% of professional TIG welders. And even those guys only put up pictures of the one or two nicest looking beads they were able to produce during a 40-50 hour work week on Instagram. So unless you want to dedicate your life to a career in welding, forget about the perfect rainbows. Also, the rainbows are an artefact which is not necessarily wanted by the end customer. IE companies don't pay their welders to produce pretty rainbows unless it's a show piece or for an artwork. Their main concern is of course the structural integrity of the weld, which is hard enough to master. Just in the process of learning TIG well enough to produce a half decent weld bead you will spend months just prepping and cleaning material and filler rods, grinding tungsten electrodes into pounds of cancerous (and in some cases also radioactive) dust. And believe me, you will spend some time demounting and regrinding and remounting and adjusting your electrode. The smallest amount of contamination (most often molten steel from accidentally dipping the electrode in the weld puddle or striking the electrode with the filler rod) will make your arc wander or pull and make it even harder to get a good result. The different methods of grinding tungsten (one of the hardest metals in the world) electrodes while avoiding the hazardous dust is a long discussion in itself, ready made relatively safe tungsten electrode grinders will start at about $600, there are other options, but what ever you do, be very careful not to inhale the dust.
So if you are only working with black steel, my suggestion is to buy a MIG welder, spend 50 hours and become a half decent at MIG. The cleaning and prep work is about a tenth of what you have to deal with as a TIG welder. And you will lay down the beads three times as fast as with TIG. There are options for MIG welding aluminium and stainless steel as well, but it gets kind of complicated with different gas mixtures than the regular 80/20. A decent MIG setup is about half the price of TIG, and you don't have to be as particular with your hood choice. Same thing goes for stick welding but it's even cheaper (roughly $200 gets you in the door) and stick can be even less sensitive to clean material than MIG depending on the choice of electrode. Though it takes more time to learn and is a bit harder to master on very thin material than MIG. But you can always be outdoors in any kind of wind as long as your material is somewhat dry from water. However if you are hellbent on trying TIG. Start by taking an evening starter class. Or if you know someone who owns a TIG setup, ask them if they are willing to show you the ropes.

The mill scale and rust will become inclusions in the weld and become faults in the weld. Weakening the weld creating failure under stress.
Structural welds often go through Non Destructive Testing. Magnetic particle, ultrasound, or radiography. The weld flaws will be revealed. These spots will have to be rewelded. Most structural welds are expected to have a 94% pass rate. Too many fails and the welder is fired.

I'm a welder and the first thing I've always been taught and one of the main sayings of welders is "preparation is more than 50% success" so this title that says welders don't talk about it c is false and misleading!!! if you see a good result, you must always clean the metal, remove impurities, scale, slag, ... the metal must be clean, then a little acetone can degrease and the same on the filler metal . every time I was asked I always said, we prepare the material, we clean it, we clean the parts to be assembled and welded, and off we go. it is not for nothing that a welder's table and his welder are always very clean, the welder reflects his personality, if he is clean he is a meticulous person, if he is dirty, you know the rest. nice video on the other hand, but I don't understand sign language.

I have encountered welding objects on the construction site that are full of chemicals such as hydrochloric acid, strong alkali, etc. Tell the owner that he still requires you to weld directly without cleaning

8 мин показывать что нужно зачищать металл)😂варишь неплохо,но сталь металл в целом не трудно сваривать.
В России на заводе каждый 2й сварщик сделает так)

Why they don't talk about it?
Because they all know your welding area should be clean.
    ffs

You did go faster on the grinded area which makes cleaner and nicer welds and if you are actually trying to educate you would have mentioned that.

"why dont professional welders talk about this?" - Proceeds to say nothing...
If the point is cleaning the surface, that's the most basic step. "Whys nobody taking about breathing when you want to live?"
