      Was pretty close to the edge alright. I had cycled up with the guy I was overtaking there and didn't want to cut him off by cutting across his line to get the apex, so ended up a little further out than usual.

      good example of looking where you want to go not where you are worried about ending up. The camera was always looking in the direction to make the corner. from there just hope the physics are on your side to stay on the tarmac :-)

    Just for information, and not contradicting anything in the title. The first straight after the cafe with the wide left hand bend (25secs) to the right hander (43secs) is 350 meters long and is covered at 70km/h. The next straight (50secs) to the start of the left hander (61secs) is 275 meters and is covered at 89km/h, then to the left hander at 82 secs at 80km/h. From 95 secs to 104 secs ave of 70km/h. The km between the first stone and second stone (borne) is at 81km/h ave. For info the snow posts on the right are spaced roughly at 20 meter gaps.

    TO ALL THE CYCLIST OUT THERE, be very careful when going downhill with cars coming up hill. I recently had a crash while going down hill on a similar road like this, there is a vehicle coming up on a turn, and I was going descending to that corner, i couldn't see the vehicle until I was in the turn, and I crashed head on to the vehicle. luckily no bones were broken, VERY LUCKY, I just got abrasion all over my body and a huge laceration on my right knee, 16 stitches!!! I could have possibly died on that crash. Now I can't ride for a while now and it takes time to recover to the same level as I was before the crash
    SO guys just be very careful when sharing the road with incoming cars in a descend!! One crash/accident is all it takes to put you down for long or worst died.

      Great advice. Hope you are back on your bike soon to enjoy the nice weather coming up. I might add, be careful all the time out on the roads, not just on the descents. Always ride within your limits. Stay safe.

    • @jonathanhole2972
      @jonathanhole2972 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alex Miles Yeah, and as a general rule you should stay below 60 kmh unless the road standard is very very good.

    • @Tutschel
      @Tutschel  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jonathan Hole As a general rule, you should not go faster than conditions (road and weather) and your skill level and experience allow. Sometimes that will be above and sometimes below 60km/h.

    • @jonathanhole2972
      @jonathanhole2972 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tutschel Sure. But I would say only very rarely does the conditions allow a speed of 60+ (for example 70). The road would have to be 6m or wider, very straight and of course, not intersect with any other road. But 80+ is always unsafe.

    • @Tutschel
      @Tutschel  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jonathan Hole Good to get your personal perspective. If you feel it's unsafe for you, I would advise, just don't do it. At no point did I feel unsafe during the descent, especially where I hit top speed, considering the long sight lines afforded on the upper slopes stretching across the mountain side. I guess it's all about perspective.

    Nice, great filming I can see you were really flying over some of the section's of the road, reminds me of when I was twenty year's old and I used to hit high speeds on my steel framed ten speed many years ago, fastest I ever hit was sixty five mph, with my friend clocking me on his motorcycle on a hill into Monmouth from the forest of Dean in Gloucestershire England, great video brought back many memories!

    I rode this in August 2014 and despite having spent many years riding motorbikes, going this fast on skinny tyres, wearing lycra deserves respect. The numbers don't matter, this is a fast ride. For the record I averaged 26mph and made the top 25% on Strava whilst staying in my comfort zone and taking the time to look at some of the scenery I was passing.

    • @Tutschel
      @Tutschel  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for dropping by and leaving your comment Kieth. Just had a look at the strava segment and the top 2 times clock in at 21:05, averaging 60.5km/h. Looks like I knocked 5secs of that in this particular run (the segment starts at 0:10 and finishes at 21:10 in the clip). Going this fast, I had to wait to watch the clip to be able to admire the scenery.

    Tutschel,
    I have watched this video many times. Can you tell me where you hit the highest speed? It is hard to tell just by watching, because the lower part of the course is so much "busier" visually. I tried reading the comments to find this out, but there is too much opinion and debate in the comments to find the answer. I am just asking where you hit the highest speed, what ever it was. I think this is a great video, regardless of how fast you went. You are a very skilled rider who did things here that I would never be able to do. Thank you for the video.

  • @thgtchr6815
    @thgtchr6815 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I found where you said you hit your highest speeds near the top of the mountain where a stiff wind was pushing you along. Your ride looks crazy fast to me. I also wondered if you use disc brakes, and I see you do. Good idea! Your bike sounds really nice.

    ou as tu pris 131 km?

  • @PetrPitakM
    @PetrPitakM 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    That is incredible! I love cycling. But I would not be able to descent at such terrible speed, because I am afraid of high speeds on bike. If I ride over 60km/h, then it is a mental problem for me, because I am thinking about a possible accident during descents, e.g. a tyre can explode etc.
    I noticed there were some cracks on the road. And if a tyre had got into one of them, it would have been bad at that speed.
    On the other hand, I heard from a former proffessional cyclist (as I watch le Tour de France), that if you fall off the bike at higher speed, then you hit the road in smaller angle and you slide the road and the possible injuries could be less serious (of course if you do not hit a vertical obstacle).
    But your descent such a famous mountain in Tour de France deserves respect.

  • @Antti5
    @Antti5 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Marcus Burghardt reportedly hit 130.7 km/h in stage 9 of last year's Tour de France. Several other riders reported speeds higher than 120 km/h that day, so it's credible.
    However, I don't see that kind of speeds in this video, or the kind of very aggressive aero tuck that the pro riders use to hit very high speeds. You can clearly see from the shadows that the dude is using a very ordinary riding position with the hands in the drops.
    So I don't believe the 131.8 k/h for a second. 100 km/h possibly, but that's a long way from 130+.

    I did 97km/h down Joux Plane a couple of years ago and yes it does look a lot faster, simply because you have a much narrower field of vision, with vegetation on both sides. Here the top speed was reached on the upper open mountain section with a 50km/h tail wind, thus not giving a true sense of the speed. The tree lined lower part looks much faster even though I only reached about 100km/h or so. The speed is real, but the perception is deceptive. All data is GPS verified. Where is your clip?

      First part: Top -> Chalet Reynard: 5.35 min for 6 km: 67.3 km/h avg. Not very impressive, especially with a 50 km/h tailwind and nearly no traffic. Makes 130km/h hard to believe. I do believe that your Garmin (or another brand) gave this as Max. speed. GPS not very reliable in the mountains. Anyway, a very nice & high-quality video. I enjoyed it a lot. Thanks for sharing. And please let's not go crazy in the descents. Every year > 10 people die on the slopes of the Ventoux!! Let's just enjoy the ride.

      Ran Chen It was my second time riding this road, but the first time was in atrocious meteorological conditions, incl. lashing rain, 80km/h winds with gusts up to 100km/h and thick cloud cover, with 30m visibility at best (see clip on my channel). I didn't have intimate knowledge of the road and would be able to improve no doubt. The other thing to keep in mind is that I can't always safely use 100% of the road with other counter flowing traffic present. It most likely is quicker, but not necessarily safer. :-)

I brake very little and only when absolutely necessary, so the wear is minimal compared to a 'cautious' descender, who might sit on the brakes the whole way down. Also it would depend on the weight of the rider, the type of pads (I use disc brakes - different compounds are available and rim brake pads might give other results too), the weather conditions, etc. Too many variables to give even a fair guess.

    Tutschel Inspiring viewing! Can you clue me in about how you deal with the unevenness in the road. At high speeds it can be quite rocky. How do you brace yourself against these impacts?

    • @janoskohler3990
      @janoskohler3990 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The road is very smooth. On bumpier roads I grip the handlebars a little tighter. Also the same techiques used in offroad cycling over uneven terrain are helpful (stand up slightly and use limbs as suspension). This minimises discomfort and improves control and safety.

    • @ErikWeijers
      @ErikWeijers 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Janos Köhler Thanks for your answer. And how about pressure in the tires? I see in other clips that you sometimes descend in wet conditions too. Do you adjust tire pressure for that?

    • @Tutschel
      @Tutschel  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Erik Weijers Yes, tyre pressure should be reduced to imcrease traction in the wet. When racing (see Red Bull Road Rage Bosnia clips) I also use special rain tyres. Dry = slick race tyres @95-100psi, wet = rain specific rubber compound tyres @85psi.

    • @ErikWeijers
      @ErikWeijers 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mm interesting. Maybe I have applied too much tire pressure then, which explains the rockiness I feel in descents..

      Aerodynamic drag is the biggest factor in arresting progress at higher speeds. It's not so bad when you have a really strong tailwind as I did. Then there are better possibilities to achieve much higher speeds than normal.

    Disc brakes, or rim brakes? If rim, were you on carbon or aluminum rims? If carbon, did you fear rim melt? I'm doing this descent in 2 weeks (in the Gran Fondo), and am trying to decide whether to ride my carbon rims or not. Note: This peels off at Le Chalet Reynard and heads to Sault, so only duplicates 5 mins of your descent - which is ballsy. ;-)

    • @batsonjay
      @batsonjay 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jay Batson I'm also bordering on clydesdale (6'2, 195lbs), which makes a difference (for which I _think_ I can adjust my decision.)

    • @Tutschel
      @Tutschel  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Disc brakes. You will only ever need to worry about rims overheating if you sit on the brakes the whole way down. As you can see, I was only on the brakes for the very minimum amount of time necessary. Enjoy your gran fondo.

    • @batsonjay
      @batsonjay 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tutschel Wow - thanks for the fast reply. I'm a pretty good descender, and am starting to conclude that if I use air braking as much as I can), and brake only around the significant corners, (and maybe use some pads designed to minimize heat, like the Swissstop Black Prince), I ought to be able to stick with my carbon clinchers. I've emailed my rim manufacturer (Reynolds) to see if they'd recommend those pads, vs. sticking with their own (blue, mfgr-branded) pads.
      Thanks again for the quick reply!

    • @Tutschel
      @Tutschel  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      For the moment, yes. The UCI will eventually take my lead, even if they are 6 or 7 years behind me and discs will become the norm.

    • @batsonjay
      @batsonjay 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tutschel I rode the descent on carbon rims with rim brakes. I didn't have any significant risk; I did modulate my braking to avoid being on the brakes and melting the rims. However, I suspect I would actually have descended at a faster pace if I would have had disc brakes, and was not worried about brake fade or rim melt.
      But thanks for your advice in-advance. Amazingly fun descent! The ascent is less fun. ;-)

      j en If that were true, all the pros would be crashing right, left and centre every time they descend in the Giro, Tour, or Vuelta, as they regularly hit speeds of 80-100km/h, sometimes above that. Vital Concept pro Kévin Reza hit 135km/h in the Tour de Suisse last year (posted the photo of his computer with stats on display to his Instagram) . You may want to get your bike checked if it starts vibrating at 80km/h. It could be your wheel(s), your headset or the frame alignment that is off. Have fun, enjoy the descents and stay safe out there.

      kingoffifa actually going behind a vehicle makes his look like childs play at 165mph or over 200k. and I literally don't believe you, your speedometer must have made an error, because that borderlines the world record which was made going down a volcano at 45 degrees, which is much more force, at your best maybe 100kph but if you really went that fast you should take your video to the cycling land records associations and get it put down as the fastest speed ever downhill on public roads with a normal bike.

      @@tatbhar7304 Great to hear. I used a few different bikes, in the earlier clips (pre 2011), but one of the brands is no longer available (Airborne), and the other one was a Litespeed Ultimate (available to buy as a complete bike or frameset - now also updated and available with discs). My main bike, and the one used in this clip, is a custom Black Sheep Bike out of Fort Collins, Colorado. I had it specially built to race the Red Bull Road Rage series, and helped develop it through my racing experiences and feedback I provided. If you can afford it, full custom is the way to go, as it's tailored to your dimensions and can be customised to how you want it to perform.
