Cloning My First Car! Updates On My Saab 900 Project (Cost of Ownership, Upgrades, Future Plans)

  • I recently bought another Saab, a 1995 900SE Convertible! It's nearly identical to my first car, which was a 1997 model that I got in 2004, i.e. Saabkyle04! That '97 Saab was the car I learned to drive on when I had my driver's permit 'back in the day'. Hard to imagine that was around 11 years ago now! With the channel rapidly approaching 1 million subscribers, I wanted to take things back to the beginning, back to the car that spawned this channel's name. I will be featuring it in numerous Vlogs over the next 6 months. The plan is to upload the "In Depth Review" for my 1 million subscriber special video. For this video, the second installment in this series, I clone my first car! Cosmetically, the car I bought was in great shape, but it was missing a handful of components that would make it a true replica, so I bought all of them and got them fitted to the car. I'll also be discussing what the car has been like to live with over the last few months or so, what I've had to repair on it and what the future plans for it are. I hope you all enjoy, it's certainly been a fun project for me! Can't wait to see what the rest of the year has in store for us :)

Noticed when the tech was reinstalling the wheels you might have a lip on your brake rotors. So when your pads wear down and require replacement, you need to budget for new rotors. For pads I really like NAPA Ultimate. I’ve used them on numerous vehicles and find them relatively inexpensive but really great street pad. Great videos.

My Saab was incredibly reliable for the 10+ years I owned it. I've been watching your vids for many years now and have to say I do miss the old 2nd hand clunkers you used to review too. How did you get to do those? Just walk up to car yards and ask? I love Mercedes Benz too (old and new) so more videos of these would be welcomed. another common thing on Saabs is the speedometer gauge cluster and dash lights. I actually had to have my speedometer replaced once. as long as you do have the dash apart, there's no better time to go ahead and replace any other miscellaneous components or incandescent lights that warrant replacement.

So I'm not the only crazy person who tears apart his whole dash to have wood grain rather than gray plastic! I did this in my Volvo, and it looks awesome. A big pain, but worth it! Plus the bonus weight reduction from the screws that I decided it didn't need anymore! Haha

Crankshaft position sensor, fuel pump and direct ignition cassette are the typical failure points on Saabs. Also the T7 (Trionic 7) engines from 1998 to 2003 have some problems with their crankcase ventilation, which might cause oil sludging and eventual engine failure. There is an update kit available for the breather.

Cool. Nice video. I would love to do that to my first car but it was a 97 Nissan Altima with electrical problems. I hated it with a passion. My first car that was actually good was a 2002 Toyota Solara SLE V6 coupe. (That's where most of my TH-cam handle comes from. GA are my initials and Solara 2002 is the car.) I loved that thing.

Viking wheels, nice. I can relate to the money pit part as well. My '01 9-3, owned for a year, has cost a lot more than it should. Paid £1300 for it (already too much), spent over £2500 getting it up to scratch and a further £1500 modifying it - and those figures don't include labour costs. I didn't buy a great example, although it's great now, but I would have considered other cars if I'd known what it was planning to do to my wallet! Gotta love them though, nothing else is quite like a Saab and now they're gone I think they're all the more special. Worth maintaining.

The wood dash panel really makes the car. For those who don't like your new wheels-sell them the old ones. It's your car, your choice.
