Happy Fourth of July AND World Firefly Day! 🇺🇸✨ Watching fireflies light up the summer sky is a beloved childhood memory, and an iconic tradition when it comes to celebrating the Fourth of July! Did you know we have fireflies right here in Colorado? Most people are unaware of this due to light pollution.
To conserve these magical creatures, Butterfly Pavilion researchers have been on a fascinating journey since 2019, unraveling the secrets of their lifecycle by collecting, breeding, and raising fireflies under human care. Last week we made an exciting breakthrough in the Firefly Lifecycle Project. After two years under human care, we successfully bred and reared three Coloradan species of fireflies to adulthood. This is a critical first step in long-term conservation efforts to help protect and support our native species of fireflies in the Front Range and beyond.
