    You need to show wiring & set up for both gas furnace/ac… and heat pump with auxiliary/emergency!!!
    Now I have to go back to this house & check wiring at Nest & configure for heat pump!
    The Installer is the main person to blame so far!!!! I’m glad you have info that helps with install & removal!

    • @TheGalacticCrusader
      @TheGalacticCrusader 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pro tip: cut out a inch x inch square and take it to a paint shop. They use a computer to match the color. Be sure the sample location is a good representation of the color since sun/grease/dust might make it look different than you want. Get a sample size of paint which often is free and then test it out. Mine matched perfectly

    If you just have a Red wire, hook it to either Rh or Rc, doesn't mater... Unlike most thermostats, the Nest Learning Thermostat does not require a jumper wire between Rh and Rc. Nest knows that if you've got heating and cooling, and just one R wire, the power source is shared between them. ... Nest Thermostat connectors are built so that only one wire can be inserted per connector.

    Good guide, was a bit worried about red wire, there was a fork RC RH or w/e they called. Tossed fork away, put red into RH just like in the video. Yellow green and white were a breeze. It’s all worked out like a charm. I really like this thermostat. Got it for about $200 from amazon on sale and there is no stupid subscription for this item. And it works with my HUE lights system. GREAT PRODUCT, I highly recommend and thank you Nest Labs for this detailed guide. ❤️

    • @AndrewC89
      @AndrewC89 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Just googled this as I had the same concern. Nest thermostats don't use jumper wires and you can simply ignore it. They use an internal jumper between the Rh and Rc connectors, so an R wire can go into a Nest Learning Thermostat's Rc or Rh connector.

    I just want to throw this in here for a heads up. When I installed mine, the "W" cord (the white one) was in the "W" slot on my old thermostat. When I inserted it into the "W" slot into the NEST, only the heat came on. If you're having this problem, take the "W" cord and insert it into the "O/B" slot. The video doesn't tell you this, so it might not apply to everyone, but that's what got mine working.
    Other than that, set up really is a breeze.

    I bought one of these, and the first month it was in place my bill soared from 450 dollars to more than 1250 dollars. I called, and they said, "that happens sometimes." They told me how to turn off the "smart" features of the thermostat, and I paid my insane electric bill. I later found out my kids were coming home from school and cranking the ac down in the heat of summer when nobody was home, so that's what it started doing. Can't blame the company for that, but oh my goodness was that a sad discovery. It doesn't seem to shut off reliably when the temperature is reached (it gets way chilly) as well. Can't say I recommend this product because now it's just a pretty thermostat. There needs to be a warning on the box.

    It would have been nice if they suggested to charge the nest with a usb while doing the install. After 2 days of filling holes, it’s now 1am in the morning and I’m googling why it won’t turn on...now I have to wait a hour for it to charge. Good thing it isn’t winter because the heat been off for hours😒

    The NEST installation / set up / modification process is a fvcking nightmare. Hours and hours of my life wasted for nothing. I have GAS / heat ONLY system. Really only needs 3 wires connected to work: R(ed) W(hite) and C(common). (Maybe not even the Common). But for some reason there were a lot of otherwires connected at my system / old thermostat. That threw me off... maybe original HVAC guy hooked them up as a habit since many other systems have cooling also. Anyway, THAT screwed me up for HOURS... because the NEXT automated process kept saying it wasn't sensing this wire or that wire or power... etc. After trying a dozen different things and going through pages of Google help garbage and watching many videos like this one I finally figured out that maybe I just needed to say there were only THREE wires connected (R, W, C) at the beginning of the configuration... and VOILA--that worked perfectly. OH--and the retardation of this set up process is even worse: If you change your Internet provider (and thus your SSID and password--you will be forced to DELETE this device / thermostat from your Google Home account and START OVER... instead of just being able to simply CHANGE THE USER NAME AND PASSWORD IN THE THERMOSTAT SETTINGS. Completely ridiculous and a huge waste of time.

    The part of the video that explains the heating/cooling system disconnect at the electrical panel is misleading and incomplete.
    Most forced air systems and hydroponic ( hot water) systems will have a 15 or 20 amp single pole ( space ) circuit breaker or fuse. The video shows as its example a two pole 30 amp circuit breaker as may be used in geothermal heat pump or air to air heat pump

    Can you add those threshold settings like in Ecobee? In cold areas, furnaces might short cycle every 15mins like four times per hour and waste energy. If we can set the heat to run a minimal 30 mins and the start to run threshold to be 2F, it would actually save more energy.

  • @Mattjammar
    @Mattjammar 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Worst thing nest has done is convince everyone that installing your own thermostat is simple to do by yourself. 2nd worst thing they've done (especially in this video) is show the thermostat running without the "C" wire. While yes it can work, it can also make the system perform erratically (blower/inducer motors turning on and off rapidly). This can cause excess wear and tear and will drastically reduce the life expectancy of your systems components.
    If you have no idea what a "c" wire does, and/or you don't have one; do not install this thermostat by yourself!

    My existing Honeywell thermostat is connected to the Central Heating pump only and controls that. When the temperature in our hall, where it's situated, drops then the thermostat detects that and turns on the pump and that fires up the boiler and hence the radiators get hot again. Simples!
    Why complicate matters so with a swanky device and anyway what it 'Fan' ? I don't have that.

  • @TaranQ
    @TaranQ 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    One thing I don't understand. On the old wiring it says RC for the red wire on the right.
    Why do they connect the RH sticker to the RC cable?? Especially since there is a RH connection on the Nest.

    Given that the current crop of Nest thermostats do not have a logo, there is no obvious way to determine which way is up for the installation. Maybe you've got gravity sensors or adapt to the detected connections, I don't know, but you need to update your video in any case.
    (For those who don't yet have one, the mounting bracket has an obvious "up", but the device will plug into the bracket two ways. I hope it doesn't matter which way, but my first suspicion is that there is an "up" direction and I cannot tell which way is "up".

    I moved into this house last June with the Nest installed already by the previous owner. The unit has been working fine until last night. The Internet has been disconnected. I checked the Nest and it indicated that the batter power is too low -- 3.716V. And I check the Equipment has this configuration: W1-Y1-G-Rc. I pulled out the Nest, and there is no C wire. Should I run a C wire to keep the Next charged up all the time as suggested by some?

    Here is a question, why doesnt NEST have control over HRV? These are mandatory on all newer homes over the past decade. Its one of the reasons why i cant use nest thermostat. Also, why must the system mode be on 'heat or cool' in order to just turn on the fan?
