too late to help.....but many Ventures have had the TCI (the ignition black box) relocated from under battery box to top of air box (secured with Velcro), so it stays cool and dry.......harness is long enough makes multimeter testing a breeze.

I had exactly the same problem on my 85 vmax... number 2 cylinder kept playing up and intermittent tach. Turned out to be the cdi box.

Oh sry to add to that I'm not having any engine problems, it's just that I noticed when syncing my carbs that number 2 the reference carb didn't jump and down as much on the sync tool as the other 3, number 2 jus barely fluctusted if that makes any sense. Was still able to adjust it to sync with others, i suppose i shiuld vacuum test it, so ya that's y i figured ide check compression.

Hey bud do u happen to know what the compression is supposed to be on a 1300? I'm getting 122 on all 4 but I think the book says it should 171.

I have a 1300 and i put new plugs in because when it warmed up it started backfiring and loss power, doesnt blow smoke or anything but the old plugs looked lean/white, now with the new plugs it doesnt stay running and sounds like its only running with one cylinder, any chance you could lead me to a different direction? Im not to sure why it would run worse with new plugs.

9 times out of 10 it is the carb idle circuit jets. But sometimes it could be the spark plug boot resistors.

    The manual?

I am having the exact same issue as you had with intermittent tach... No power. How did you finally resolve the issue? Was it the computer? Looked for a continuation but found nothing. Any input you have would be appreciated. Thank you in advance.

It's been a couple years now, but I beleive with the ignition misfire from the faulty spark boot resistors causes the tach to not work or work intermittently. When I fixed the mis fire the tach worked. I did do a video on that. I just bought another Venture in beautiful condition. Can't wait to do a trip on it. Cheers!!

I had to watch my videos again. It was the spark boots. I had several boots failing. Removed the resistor in them and put brass in, cleaned springs and end caps as well. The tach is triggered by the ignition coil firing. If there is bad spark or no spark tach won't work.
