10 years later, and I just purchased a Venture with a howling speedo.
You are still helping people so much to this day. Thank you for doing this and putting it up on TH-cam.

Same. Just working on getting an ‘84 working. The Speedo is a howler. That’s why I am here.
      Thanks for this!

I had an 1983 Venture. That was a blast to ride. I've had 2 Gen. 2's, most comfortable bike I've ever ridden. More comfortable than my Electraglides. I've been looking at Gen. 1 Ventures lately, thinking about picking one up for an inexpensive touring bike. Nice ones are going for $2500 - $2800. I really enjoy your videos Shawn.

I'm not sure how this all played out this way, but all the large dirt bikes are my son's and all the small dirt bikes are mine. We just started collecting in different directions... I did the same with street bikes too...?
I just ride one of his when we go out in the hills. There's an '86 Z50RD (Chrome), '04 XR70 and '72 CT90 that are covered in the corner.
That damn wiener schnitzel HAS to be with me whenever I'm out doing anything... She's my little shop buddy!
    Thanks StripBolt!

Just had this crazy problem with a crazy howling noise. I can't believe I came across this video by chance. I thought I was going crazy hearing this coming from my dash. Got an 84 venture 1200

Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Mine just started howling two days ago. It also was worst at cooler temperatures. Looks like I'll be using this info to take it apart tomorrow.

My last venture had a howling speedometer and a Guy at the truck shop told me to see a guy on the outskirts of Astoria, Or. Who had an old speedo shop. Now this tale is about 20 yrs. old but I think he changed out the cable and put some special spray lubricant in the gears. I rode that bike for 10 yrs afterward and never heard another howl. I finally sold that bike about 2010 maybe. I miss getting out on the open road.

Enjoyed the video. I never pulled the dash without removing the windshield. A quick fix on greasing the speedo is to make a fitting that will screw on the speedometer that has a grease fitting and using a grease gun, pump grease around the bushing. You can get a brass cap at Lowes and drill and tap it for a grease fitting. Costs less than $5 and all you have to do is unscrew the speedometer cable, put the fitting on, grease it, put the cable back on and you are good to go.

Love the dog mate. I too have a little dog that follows me every where so I can't stop suddenly or I'd have a hairy hemorrhoid lol.
