  • What more can you do with a clapper other than getting your seams to press perfectly? Let's see :)
The Riley Blake Designs clapper comes in two sizes: the 12" Tailors Clapper and the 7" Quilter's Clapper. The clapper is made of hardwood and is a classic tool used with a steam iron to beautifully set a seam. Made in the USA.

My husband made my clapper from some spare wood he had in his workshop. He even carved my name on top. So it’s really precious, yet it cost nothing.

This is the first time I understood why this tool is called a clapper. You clapped the warmed and steamed fabric into submission. Clap, clap, clap! Thanks for a great video.

A great clapper I have seen was a 12 inch square with a central knob. It covered the whole block and did an excellent job!

My husband made me a clapper from a piece of handrail wood. I covered the curved area with a scrap of wool, perfect for ironing open small areas.

I made 'clappers' from hobby Lobby plaques & knobs & gorilla glue; wife also uses magazines , puts squares/blocks between pages to absdosrb steam/heat & set seams

I have one of those smaller ones and loved it. Then I found a 10" square one and it's a game-changer on my blocks.

Thank you for such an awesome video explaining the Clapper. Not just for quilting but for sewing too. I've heard about them but no one has ever demonstrated how to actually use it. I'm a visual learner so this video was what I needed to make the💡 go off. Please keep the great videos coming.

Fortunately my husband makes these but only for charity events. Then again, I am his biggest charity case. He made me 4 of them! He also made some to give away as prizes at our retreats and bus shop hops. They are SEW handy! Maple wood makes the best ones because the steam does not raise the grain of the wood. He made me a fancy one out of Black Walnut but once it hit the steam, the fibers sprang up like slivers! Thanks for showing everyone how useful they are.

I was carrying a smooth round piece of scrap wood in Home Depot & dropped it in the parking lot. It ended up a clapper because it split perfect. Apparently the grain was separated so that's why it was in the scrap bin. LOL. It works great. 👍 👌

I do have some! A small one (from Crafty Gemini) and a medium one (from Riley Blake). I use them every time I need to piece my blocks together. Every seam gets the clapper at the end. I find that squaring up my very flat blocks is so much more accurate.

I love clappers. I own all of the "Jackson's Woodworks" clappers... five in total, various sizes and shapes. They are one of the notions I can't do without. They make a huge difference to my quilting/sewing/ironing.
Even so, I learnt a few things from your video... many thanks!!! ❤️

I bought my 12” Riley Blake clapper when it was a Daily Deal at MSQC. I use it all the time. My housemates are continually amazed at how I use all the ‘crazy tools’ I buy. One asked to see the difference. He was really surprised he could tell even though I had pressed both in front of him. I had tried using thinner pieces of wood in the past with less success.

I have a standard tailor's clapper that I bought a few years ago. I use it both for garment construction and for quilt construction. It is a great way to get a good precise press on a seam, especially for fabrics that don't take pressing well (e.g., heavier fabrics, etc.) Instead of assaulting the fabric with the iron for along period of time, I can use steam to heat it up and use the clapper to reinforce that heat in the seam just as you demonstrated. I wouldn't consider quilting or sewing without it now.
