This isn’t really safe the way it is with multiple cells being charged with the single BMS. The first one should work. I think all you need is a better battery - one with a higher c rating. The long small gauge wire probably doesn’t help much either.

You should only use exactly the same 18650 cells in parallel. For the voltage drop issue maybe check max battery current. Some only gives like 5amps of current while other give 20a like e-cigarettes cells. And never swap the cells unless you swap ALL OF THEM AT ONCE. Because if you put empty cells in parallel with fully charged cells it would transfer a lot of current and this could be dangerous (discharged cells would be charged by full cells and because there is no current limitation it will just burn the battery)

Warning! I work with these batteries, and you SHOULD NEVER connect two different models of Lion batteries in parallel. They have different parameters like voltage and capacity, that can end very very badly during charging!
7:00 the battery percentage is right, because the LiPo battery in the phone is fully charged at 4.4v. The 18650 is fully charged at 4.2v.
You should not charge the batteries with the phone! Overcharging will end very badly
You should buy a TP4056 Module, and use it to charge the battery pack directly.

A single 18650 battery can provide enough current but the wires that come with the battery holder are cheap steel wires with very high resistance. If you replace them with thicker copper wires the phone will run on a single 18650. Also, NCR18650B batteries are high capacity, low discharge rate(Low C, as it is called in the community) cells. I didn't look at the datasheet, but it should be around 6A continuous or something. NCR18650GA by Sanyo/Panasonic is also high capacity but comes with much higher C rating and more suitable to this application. Most batteries can pulse much higher than their continuous rating, so keep that in mind.
As the last thing, there is no need to remove the original battery if the battery is not a high voltage cell(3.85V), you can just tap into the bms with another cell but be sure the voltages are somewhat close.

The other thing you could do that would take way more work is to make a back that you can put on the phone that has a hole where the battery would be and then you can swap out the battery that way You would have to make your own cable that goes from the connector on the board to the connector on the battery so that you can use easily swappable batteries but it could be done Not sure what kind of chips you would need on that cable though.

@@pretty_bored I think your right, youd still be able to see, but not very well. I fucked up a screen on an iPhone 6 and cracked it, so I did this. Hence being no backlight or reflectors it was extremely dim, with more tweaking you could theoretically put the backlight to shine in through a see through mesh or plastic (maybe some sort of fiber optics that shoot the light to the sides of the screens, but it’s definitely not ideal.

What I don't like about removable batteries is that is someone were to steal your phone they would be able to pop off the lid just as easily as you can and you'll never have a chance to track your phone down. The latest versions of Android (13 I think) have a feature that prevents your phone from turning off, instead they just make the thief believe they turned it off, so you would still be able to track it down even if your phone gets "turned off", bit with the removable battery that idea gets thrown out the window. I think iOS might have a similar feature? Not sure tho, but the latest Android OS definitely has that.

that voltage drop is measured by something called "continuous discharge rate" and it ranges from 10A to 30A (you can find it on the datasheet if you google thos numbers) and i think Lipo batteries (the ones that are flat) have a rating of 20A+ and also thos cells have something called charging rate which is very important cuz if you mismatch batteries it can overcharge other batteries that have a higher charging rate if you charge them all together.

PRG, you've gotta try this with Ni-Cd batteries, each cell is 1.2v nominal so 3 in series will be perfect. Ni-Cd batteries are literally indestructible, they can withstand -20°c to 45-50°c so you could probably freeze your iPhone too 😁

    • @kisko327
      @kisko327 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Actually no. In normal conditions li-po batteries have voltage per cell in range of 4.2V when fully charged to 3.2V(optimal) - 3.0V(minimal safe) when discharged. Ni-Cd batteries have almost constant voltage. Phone's BMS board is not designed for working with ni-cd batteries

As someone that works on phones everyday, I'm really surprised you don't know more about lithium batteries. The round cells you used are called eighteen six fifty batteries, and they are lithium ion chemistry. The 18650's have a slightly lower voltage than what the phone uses normally. Phones have lithium polymer cells inside these days, and phone batteries are fully charged at 4.35v vs the 4.2v maximum of the regular 18650 batteries you replaced the lithium polymer pouch cell with. That BMS would had let the 18650 cells overcharge to 4.35v and you would had been in a little trouble if anything went wrong and the 18650's went into thermal runaway because of overcharging. Next time, use a lithium polymer pouch cell that goes up to 4.35v max, similar to what comes in the phone, so the BMS and voltages match up and you can use the regular charger to charge the phone. You can get 2x 5000mAh pouch cells in parallel, and have a similar 10,000 mah battery size, plus the new cells can lay completely flat. If you 3D Printed a new back for the iPhone, you could easily fit the 2 lithium polymer pouch cells inside the phone, along with the BMS and it would all be much more tidy, and much more safe because the BMS can't overcharge the cells anymore.

Things I would want in this mod:
    -custom cnc-machined iPhone housing
-encased battery modules (you can have multiple)
    -charging station for battery modules
-the battery modules would have contacts to interface with the iPhone
-the iPhone without a battery module installed would still have a protrusion and the mechanism would be inspired by old laptop battery packs

Ki! I have a little challenge for you. I've done this on my Xiaomi Redmi 7a and it's incredible. The challenge is, you have to add another speaker, but from laptop or y'know, just add another speaker on the back, in you're case on the sides of the batteries for better cable management (or idk) so, don't brake anything, don't take away anything but just add another set of speakers on the back of the phone. Thanks, even if you wouldn't try.

Seeing the nominal voltage of the phone's battery is 3.82v, it leads me to suspect the battery pack is actually Lithium Polymer High Voltage [LiHV], not Li Ion, which usually are 3.6v, although the one you had was 3.7v nominal, the same as LiPo packs.
