That canal is just savage.
The canal was much worse back in the 70's. The side walls were mostly just wood and magnified the wakes.
I don't understand the no wake, the whole thing is rough as hell.
Some of these lake boats with open cockpits and down sloping bows are just begging to be filled with water

Buying a boat with a downward facing bow would be the worst purchase. I watch a few of these videos from various channels and those type of boats always seem to lose to the waves.

I am 60 years old and have been boating in the PNW since I was 10. What is the deal with downward facing bows? When did that become a thing? I started seeing them at the seattle boat show a few years ago and remain confused. It seems like such a bad idea. The only upside seems to be if you have a ladder on the bow for getting back aboard, but why not just have a non-sloping bow and a slightly longer swim ladder? Even lake Washington can get super rough and I’ve always believed in the virtues of lots of freeboard.
I second that. Also in PNW. Bow riders are for pleasure and mild level water sports where the number of people on the boat is the priority. Everything has its uses. I'd love to see a sparkling bass boat with 2 well fed anglers and a camera person on board, running through there with commitment so we could see all the comments from the bow rider boaters.
stuffing isn't a low freeboard issue, it's a largely a combination of pilot error and boats with reverse sheer bow designs (and passengers forward). in a fast-moving low wake zone, adjust your speed to stay on the BACK side of a wave - or time your trip to coincide with tidal current and wind in the same direction
id say the problem almost all the time, except for in pontoons is that ppl are sitting on the front part of the boat, which in reality is were ur spouse to go after u get situated, not when ur traveling. hence why in most boats the seating isnt very comfy up there or its a really tall seat for casting

In that canal it is hard not the stuff the bow in any boat. The conditions are bad enough but then you have the people exceeding the no wake limit making conditions worse.
Weird to be a no wake zone when the waves are much worse than any wake could give.

Those Florida kids bumping around without so much as arm bands, much be able to swimm like penguins, including jumping back on board a moving boat.
We had an 18 foot Lyman growing up. It was so nice having a boat that was almost impossible to stuff.
Growing up in Erie, those boats are legendary.
After watching so many videos from the Florida inlets, it seems EXTREMELY odd seeing so many kids (and adults) actually WEARING PFD's. Must be because the State Revenue Collection Agency (State Police) has a post right ON the canal.
If threat of a ticket is the only reason someine have their kids wear PFD that's an indicator of worthlessness

The canal is not a no wake zone. Not one official sign says no wake. But you must maintain control of your boat and you are responsible for your wake so you take it easy.
I don't understand how this canal is a no wake zone? Not a single boat passed through without a wake, I'm not even sure that is possible if you're trying to keep the nose up.
Rule 1, when in big seas reduce the weight in the BOW and go to the STERN!!
Your scoring of the canal is much better than haul over. Your scoring of haul over makes me yell at my monitor a lot.

The passenger was told not to touch anything and took it upon himself to hit the throttle, almost throwing the captain into the motor from what I heard. Which is very dangerous.
how deep is the sides I've only had alloy boats they can take a pounding then you can just hammer it out weld it closed etc fiberglass need a little more care in shallow water

I grew up on that canal. You cannot move against a full tide without a wake.
Yeah, even in a no wake zone you are still allowed to go fast enough to maintain steerage and headway. It looked to me like they weren't going any faster than that. And they were keeping their bow up to avoid stuffing and it looked like they had a textbook exit. It's not their problem the other boat was too small to handle the conditions. I wouldn't put my own vessel in jeopardy in that case to slow down either.
@@bobloblaw1720 You must not watch very many of these videos. You keep the bow up, just like the guy did. If you go slower, the bow noses down and you get waves breaking over the bow. He did it right. Its like Karma. The guy complaining was too stupid to know what he was doing, and nosed his boat in, proving his ignorance.

The bow on the third boat looked like a shovel......I couldn't do it....I have a classic early 80s proline and I couldn't go to anything with less of a bow after...that things a tank

Grew up in point pleasant and if you want to see a complete idiot show go to the canal on any weekend in the summer . Loved fishing in there in the spring up until Memorial Day and then after that forget it until September

A bow rider in this situ should be empty up (crew in stern area) front and trimmed high. Prob solved.

Makes no sense. Trim way up and plow with the bow up high. Too easy.
Except that's how you make the biggest wake possible in your boat, is to have it run at that middle speed and plowing. You make less wake going faster and getting properly up on plane. They should change the rules for the canal, so that if you are going against the current you must be up on plane doing at least 15knots. Maybe set an upper limit too, such as 35 knots. Have a series of floating sign posted buoys that can turn around with the tide, posting the different rules for the different directions as the tide turns. Also keep people going a particular direction on their own side of the canal so you don't have head on collisions at speed.

Not if you go slow. I've had a capt's license for 35yrs for different boats/trawlers. Small outboard boats and stern drives trimmed high and just enough throttle to keep the bow up. No more of a wake than the tidal waves in that channel.
All of those hulls with the drop nose bow a fair weather boats and suck IMO.
@@wilsonrawlin8547 but you can't go slow when you're travelling against an 8 knot current. Even if you're only making 2 knots of headway, that's still 10 knots worth of wake. This is my main problem with no wake zones in places with fast flowing currents. What sort of wake does your boat make at 10 knots, and how does that compare to 20 knots?
PS. I agree the current fashion trend of a low nose is not something I like either.
