- Artist: Jimmy Eat World
Song: Goodbye Sky Harbor
Album: Clarity
Lyrics:
"Is tomorrow just a day like all the rest."
How could you know just what you did?
So full of faith yet so full of doubt I ask.
Time and time again you said don't be afraid.
"If you believe you can do it."
The only voice I want to hear is yours.
Again.
I shall ask you this once again.
And again.
He said:
" I am but one small instrument."
Do you remember that?
So here I am above palm trees so straight and tall.
You are smaller, getting smaller.
But I still see you.
Clarity should definitely be considered one of the greatest albums of all time, its on the same level as many of those extolled masterpieces
***** that is brilliant =]
Kyle Witzen It is. www.besteveralbums.com
Not many albums can reach that high rank.
It’s on my “Stranded On a Desert Island” list. Amazing album.
This is absolutely true. I think a lot of true music fans would agree. It's an emotional masterpiece, through and through. Goodbye Sky Harbor is my favorite. Early Jimmy Eat World is one of my biggest musical influences.
@@WhyWouldYou13 duuuude me and my homies had this same list. and this was on everyone's
I'm pretty sure I've listened to this song more than anyone on Earth
Probably one of the best albums I've ever heard in my whole life
This has to be one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
The live version is so powerful too.
Lyrically, the song is based on John Irving's brilliantly poignant "Prayer for Owen Meany". The novel's cathartic ending takes place in Sky Harbor Airport. When I heard this song the first time, in that context, I had to pull off the road, overwhelmed by the way the universe sometimes can be so benevolent.
+Doug Bowman I never knew this, thank you so much!
Lagwagon's "Owen Meaney" also obviously from this novel which has been sitting in my bookcase for several years, unread.
I just finished the book yesterday. I only read it because of Lagwagon's song. It was a long read, but worth it. Both songs will make more sense to you once you read the book. Do it.
I first read Owen Meany as a senior in high school, probably a year or two after first buying this album. After reading it I was sitting in math class listening to it on my Walkman when this song came on. I literally jumped out of my chair and yelped when I realized what the song was about. One of my favorite albums and one of my favorite novels.
@@natalie9175 John Irving is one of my favorite authors
I lived in Tempe, Arizona for 8 years. Every single time I flew out of Sky Harbor International, I listened to this song. Now I'm in Seattle and this song helps bring me back.
"Here I am above palm trees so straight and tall, you are smaller, getting smaller, but I still see you..."
Have you read 'A Prayer for Owen Meany'? The song's about Owen's last moments
I did the same many times.
I remember showing this to my dad and he gifted me back with Pink Floyd
This song is awesome, love every minute of it. People who say this is too long and boring obviously don't notice the progressive build throughout the song. Really shows the creative talent of this band
Sure one could validly feel that this song is long and boring indeed, but a portion of people who say this is too long and boring either listened to it at the wrong time with the wrong mood incompatible with the song, or just the type that like 3 minute tracks filled with Wow! moments. Writing a paper or doing homework to this track is tremendous
It's the adding one simple thing every few seconds that builds and is great. If people don't notice it, that's their loss.
Mark Mccormick 🎯
The ending is one of my favorite musical moments ever.
This song isn't for people who don't find long songs boring. Not judging, but it really isn't. How it goes from visceral hard rock to practically A Capella (and further) is an example of how genius meets art.
You can go to so many amazing places in your head during that 10 minute stretch in the middle of this song. So fucking glorious.
Clarity is by far their best album. It's sad that it doesn't get as much recognition as it deserves.
💯It's even better when they sing it live
No matter how cold it gets, this song always warms me.
Song and the extended sonic outro reminds me of why I first fell in love with this band when they first started becoming a big local band. I love those early shows at Nita's hideaway and how a lot of times we got there early enough to make up the majority of the first few rows, singing along to all the songs as loud as we could as if we were at a karaoke party! Good times! I'll never forget getting to hang out with them backstage after they headlined at Glendale arena. "Pain" was the number 1 song on MTV alternative for the record 26th consecutive week (or something like that), and it felt like they had conquered the world. It was so awesome to see the rest of the world finally loving "our band" as much as we had from the get-go (Static Prevails anyone?). AZ still loves you Jimmy! Thanks for all the memories, and thanks to Tom specifically for the autographed copy of "Futures" on vinyl to ensure I'll never forget the most larger than life concert experience of my entire life!
This song makes me so proud to live in Arizona.
This 16 minutes and 12 seconds listen makes me very grateful from the deepest part of this heart.
Shows how influential this band and specifically this album was when a great band like The Wonder Years mention this song in it's lyrics "Arizona's airport is called Sky Harbor. I wonder if that's what the last song on Clarity's about." really nice touch and as I said shows what a benchmark this album was.
2:52 is where the progressive build starts. Best part. Shit is amazing.
SmallvillenerdTwo best thing Ive heard in my life
I've been listening to this song for 20 years, so I decided to read A Prayer for Owen Meany. Every line that was used in the lyrics hit me hard
This song gave me so many chills, I got a cold.
hahhah this is so funny
16 minutes of brilliance
I remember being 19 and I didnt drive yet so i walked to work 3 miles each day there and back in the dead of winter, this album was in my cd player every damn day.

i have respect for u keep it up its called work ethic i hope u have a car now god bless.

Goosebumps when those drums kick in at 13:00
BEST WAY TO FINISH A ALBUM!
Clarity is one of my favourite albums of all time. This song in particular is a fantastic end to a fantastic album. I don't know how many times I've just sat and listened to the end of this song for 13 minutes.....
I've always loved this song, but never understood completely the lyrics. It got me (along with Lagwagon's "Owen Meaney") to read the book (which i just finished reading), and now I'm speachless. So full of emotion, the song gets an even deeper meaning, and it's awesome that they could put all that in a song. Thanks JEW.
ikr. A Prayer for Owen Meany, hands down, has the best songs written after it. Also, hi, 6 years in the future!
This song calms me down, cheers me up and makes me feel fuzzy inside at once. It's just that amazing.
Jimmy Eat World is a good counter-argument to the overuse of autotune today.
I lived on a road in Florida called Sky Harbour Drive for a few months, when I finally left and moved away this and "Five State Drive" by Less Than Jake were the first things I played.
that shit is fuckin poetic
You know why this is so great, compared to similar music made now? No quantization and no autotune. Just excellent playing, singing, and production.
I grew up in PHX just like Jimmy Eat World, and as a child I'd oftentimes be going out of town to visit family elsewhere, flying out of Sky Harbor back then.... This song perfectly puts that feeling into words
I've yet to date a woman who can listen to this whole song. This has resulted in me developing a theory that the woman I marry will love and adore every second of it like I do.
LOL i hear this all at the end... and it was my cell phone ring for many years.
@@arianazita Dude, this is your chance! Get married please.
This is hilarious! I made this comment forever ago. I'm getting married next year and she loves this song as much as I, yay!

I am but one small instrument
Man, this song takes me back. :)
I want this played at my funeral.
Yes man. But may it be many, many years in the future. Prayers sent.
Very excited about seeing JEW this fall. I hope they play older stuff than "The Middle". Don't get me wrong..I love that song too, but I feel like the heart and soul of the band was poured into this album.
Sometimes this is my favorite song of theirs.
I don't want to add to the clutter of YT comments and reiterate what other people have already said, but -
HELL YES. This record was a game changer. And Capitol screwed the pooch soooo hard when they ditched them. The production by Mark Trombino - astounding. The songwriting, the musicianship - impeccable. This record is an absolute masterpiece.
I'm here punching this track up today because I was texting with an ex, and the line from this song came up in my head, and it was the only thing I could think of to say:
The only voice I want to hear is yours.
Masterpiece indeed.
Probably the craziest audio every made. If you can't see it, you probably don't have a soul. Thank the Lord this was made by these young men.
Arizona definitely named it after this
IT GIVES ME THE SHIVERS
Arizona's airport is called Sky Harbor.
I wonder if that's what the last song on Clarity's about!
LEGENDARY
I kept on playing high volume on this music while traveling to school. I miss those times..
Absolutely amazing track, by a fabulous band.
I've heard that multiple times over the past decade..so thumbs up.
this song brings back so many memories from highschool, miss those days man.
Amazing Album.. Amazing song. And seeing it live is fantastic! :)
This song chokes me up every time.
If you don't like this one, you don't get it.
It's a small price to pay for one of the greatest endings to an album ever.
the GOAT
Heard them play this in full a few years ago. Absolutely amazing.
Listening to this everyday
Sittin' here at the terminal and I have about three more rounds until my flight back to the Midwest.
I'm gonna miss Phoenix
602 will always be home but goodbye sky harbor has so much meaning to me. A freedom I can’t explain.
omg thx for putting up the long version :)
One of the best Jimmy songs ever. I love Clarity with a passion but I have to put Futures just a shade above it. The latter album came out about 3-months after my wife and I moved to Mesa. A friend of mine at work heard about what a huge Jimmy fan I was and burned me a copy of Futures that he had obtained from Jim's cousin a few months before the release date. It was all my wife and I listened to for so long.
Can't wait for the new album!
Great song
One of their greatest.
Clarity is my favorite album by them and this track is an awesome ending to an awesome album.
this song is awesome! its a long version, still it doesn't get me bored or anything like that.. the beat is so cool, and .. yeah, i just feel soooooo good when i listen to that.. awesome song! ♥
Seriously one of my favorite songs ever. I recommend to everyone who likes this song to check out Midtown's So Long As We Keep Our Bodies Numb We're Safe.
I love how this song is 16 minutes but it basically ends after 3 minutes. The rest of the song is like the end credits which concludes this iconic album
I love this whole song
Love this song. Thank you for uploading the whole thing! XD
Thanks for uploading! you are a legend!
The best part is at the end before the long as heck instrumental repeat. Smaller, gettin smaller...! 2nd n 3rd(this) albums are pure gold
@PGSawesome
I used to think the same thing back in 2001 when I discovered Jimmy Eat World, but the entire 13-minute outro sounds very necessary to me now. This song is absolutely epic.
I still like the shorter 5-minute version they used to play live before 2010-ish just as much, however. It's like looking at a painting from two different yet similar viewpoints.
I think that this song is better than Stairway to Heaven, A Day in the Life and Pink Floyd's Echoes combined. Goodbye Sky Harbor is one of my favorite album closers EVER. The Clarity album is a masterpiece that deserves more recognition.
16 minutes of awesomeness...
masterpiece
I will never listen to a shorted version. Ever.
best long song all along
This Song is destroying me. Every Time.
This always puts a smile on my face :)
Just flew out yesterday ✌️️🌵☀️💜
thank you for posting :D
@freebirdbeard it's actually a nod to the book "A Prayer for Owen Meany", in which Owen and the narrator of the book meet up for (if I remember right) the last time, in the airport named Sky Harbor.
Halcyon On &On...
I believe the empty space that is devoid of lyrics is supposed to represent Owen Meany's ascension to heaven. The song is about the book a prayer for Owen Meany, specifically the end.
@Sparkwolf I actually like the shorter one now as well, having seen them live and them playing that version :3 It was awesome.
I miss 2011. Nostalgia is a bitch..miss Danni
Check out "The warmth of the daytime seemed like a dream now." by Cloudkicker for a sound similar to the intro. It's basically a heavier version of that stop-start rhythm and it's addictive as hell.
oh ye, you're right
I see what you mean. The rhythmic pattern is similar.
Ok, lets give it a try
The best part of the song begins around the three minute mark.
Can't sleep on that 3 minute intro though
Just found a receipt in my wallet from my layover in Phoenix and it say's W. Sky Harbor Blvd. Must be the meaning behind the song since they're from Mesa, AZ
@xjubezx No, they didn't sell out. If they had sold out, you'd be hearing The Middle on every other car commercial, and you wouldn't have to wait three years to hear their next album. They simply changed their sound a bit. Nothing wrong with that. Better than releasing album after album that sound exactly the same. Each Jimmy Eat World album is unique.
I wish this was my leaving arizona song. What a missed opportunity.
yes, one of the best of all time. agreed point to another 20 that are /should be included in the list, this will beat out many. beyond it's time. unpretentious. it just is what they wanted it to be. I only wish they followed in the same path, rather than diverted into catchy hooks. this music is thought provoking, and introspective. beyond it's time
I believe that I read that that's what it's about. I've never read it. Maybe someday when I'm all done with school, I will.
Just like the book that it inspired it.....I tried but can never get through it.
Not a huge fan of the album or the band, but the second half of the song is just out of this fucking world. It takes guts to make repetition so blissful.
@RomantikxTragedy Sounds more like an homage to A Prayer for Owen Meaney by John Irving. Excellent book, highly recommend it. some of the lyrics are taken straight out of the book it seems.
This makes me think of bands like Chamberlain, Saves The Day and the Hoover / Lincoln split 7".
am I the only one who cried to this?
That twinkly outro.
this song makes me forget what gravity is.
Maybe it was a deliberate decision and they didn't just decide to fill up 16 minutes for no reason.
Fact.
@epiphoneplayer5 God loves you
What’s better: first 3 minutes or last 13?
6 people don't remember that
Such an awesome song. It reminds me a bit of Weezer.
