Something else I love about this game is how ahead of its time it was in terms of fourth wall breaks. In the intro of world one, when kirby gets his sword knocked out of his hands, it flies out of the little "screen" and lands in the game's logo. And then in the intro for the fountain of dreams, when kirby goes to put the star rod back, he just walks out of the vignette, like it's just a cardboard cutout attached to the stage. I can't think of any other NES games that would play around with their own presentation like that. It's great. Those little intro animations were just comedic gold in general. Really expressive for the time, and great comedic timing.
I don't know how I've never considered Kirby's Adventure in the context of other NES games being ball-bustingly difficult. That parallel is such a cool way to look at this game and it's given me a lot more of an appreciation for Adventure.
I played this game twice in a row, once on the 20th anniversary collection on Wii and once on the 3D classics version on 3DS, and the difference between the two is stark. the game is so much more enjoyable when it's not slowing down whenever more than 3 particles are on screen.
I just recently got to play this on the Switch online service. All My life I've been enjoying Kirby since Nightmare in Dreamland for the GBA. It's still hard to believe the first Super Mario Bros and this played in the same hardware. Great video. Also I thought this was from a super popular channel when it got recommended to me. Weird you don't have more subs.
Love this, man, your writing is top notch. Never really thought that much of this game but you pointed out a lot of unique aspects of it compared to other NES games that made me appreciate it more. Definitely gonna have to give it another playthrough some time before Kirby and the Forgotten Land comes out.
do you remember what your source was on the thing about artists doing paintings of the level architecture as reference for the sprite work? that's really interesting
I knew how great late NES games were but you're cementing the fact that every kirby game absolutely rules. Gotta check out more of them love your videos great work as always!
Is this the first videogame with a retro throwback? I know Kirby's Dreamland wasn't "retro" yet when this was made, but it did make a throwback to a game on lower fidelity hardware, using the visuals of said hardware. Has any game done that before Kirby's Adventure?
One that comes to my mind is Mario 3's multiplayer battle mode calling back to arcade Mario Bros. But that's certainly not as deliberate a retro throwback as what Kirby's Adventure does.
@@MattCrossMedia It's a throwback in terms of game concept, but it doesn't call back to the arcade game's technology or anything. It feels more like a reimagining. Maybe if they had kept the original arcade sprites.
Super impressed by this video, great job. I’ve always thought adventure was overrated but agree with all your praise. It’s a good game just very lacking in polish and riddled with bad design decisions

Also, do you have any intent to do Dream Land 2?
I'd like to, but sometime after I've covered Sakurai's directed trilogy.
@@MattCrossMedia Makes sense.
Why doesn't this have more views? It's so well done
Loved this, especially the historical framing you gave for the game’s development. Can’t wait for the Kirby Superstar retrospective!

The OST of the Nightmare endboss fight in its ball form is still outstanding!

Please continue the NMH references running gag for every Kirby review. those are great.

It was from this interview they did for the game's official guidebook at the time: shmuplations.com/kirbysadventure/

That commercial is from the UK not the U.S.

Great video for a great game. :)
