Thanks for posting this video. It did take the wind out of my sails regarding the possibility of my going to the gym on my own. I guess it’s just another thing that I as a visually impaired person cannot do independently.

Yes, I understand completely… I too am totally blind and this video was very uninspiring. However, there is a new EGYM at my local YMCA where I live and it does look very promising to independently work out… It's all AI driven and from what I can tell, it really might work. Good luck finding something that might also work for you. Your honesty is refreshing. 2:37

I am blind, I would like to use the EGYM in my local community independently… I was hoping this video might give me some inspiration, but in fact you are completely dependent on another person in every context you describe… That's a little discouraging, but I'm going to figure out how to make it work for myself, alone and independent 2:37

Hi thanks for the video ! I'm a student from Korea and I became interested in the welfare of blind and deaf people and I was wondering if there are any gym specialized for blind people in the States? It would be great to hear a reply !

Hi! Thank you so much for watching this video and for reaching out to me with the comment and question. It is so nice to hear from you and meet you too! Wow, that is so cool that you are a student in Korea. When I was in college, I actually lived in the dorm with our international student from South Korea. He was from the city of Saul. He was such a cool guy and I got to know him very well as well as his other Korean friends throughout the semester. That was such a cool opportunity that I would never trade for anything. I love to getting to know him and all of his friends! He was such a great guy and I absolutely loved him :-) as for your question, I do not believe there are any gyms here that are specifically geared toward blind and visually impaired people. Well, none that I am aware of anyway. Some of the gyms in the area accommodate to those of us who are blind or visually impaired, but I do not think that the gyms are specifically geared toward any of us. I hope that helps and answers your question. Please feel free to reach out to me with any additional questions if you would like me to elaborate. Thanks again for watching and for reaching out to me, I sincerely appreciate it and look forward to talking to you again soon :-) Matt

Thanks great info would you recommend getting a trainer. If you are new to it

Hi! Thank you so much for watching and commenting on this video, it is very nice to hear from you. That is a great question. If you were brand new to working out, you may choose to work with a trainer for a few sessions just to get the layout of the gym and to understand all of the machines and how they work. Typically gyms will give this service for free as a one time orientation. Personal training sessions may be helpful for maybe 4 to 6 sessions again just to get oriented with the gym and all of the machines. They will also give you some recommendations on what to train and win. As in, which muscle groups to train on the same days and how much cardio to incorporate into your workouts, if any. Thank you again for the comment, please feel free to reach out with any additional questions that you may have. It is nice to hear from you, I hope to hear from you again soon. Matt

Thank you for the fast response in the great information do you and your experience feel like the people who work in the gym including the trainers are OK and I understand about persons who are blind or visually impaired and are they patient with those people or do they treat you differently do you have any negative situations or experiences. And then your opinion is it worth it to spend the extra money do you have a trainer more than the suggestion of sessions like for more of a long period of time or is it better just to try to figure it out on your own once they show you the ropes I am overweight and need to lose a lot of weight and want to build some muscle as well but going to a gym has always been a question because of the obvious reason getting around without getting lost or falling over something or pushing into someone else or causing any type of problems and then of course how the staff will react or treat you

Hi, it’s great to hear from you again. Thank you for reaching out to me with all of these questions and concerns. I think you definitely have some valid concerns since you are new to the gym. I am happy that you asked me and I will definitely answer these to the best of my ability from what I have experienced and noticed. From my experience, the staff and the personal trainers at the gym are very helpful for those who are cited and visually impaired. Since you are brand new to the gym, you may want to bring someone with you who you are very familiar with and who is familiar with you. The reason for this is so that when the trainer is walking around the gym showing you all the machines, the person you know and trust can also be there to describe and help you in anyway that you need. This person that is with you who knows you also knows your needs and would be able to better assist you the first few times you go. In regards to your question about needing to lose a lot of weight, I would suggest just going to the gym and asking for some orientation of the machines. Make it very clear that you are brand new to the gym and that you were also visually impaired. Explain that you would like someone to walk around the gym with you and show you how the machines operate. Like I said, from all the gyms I’ve been to, this is typically a free service with orientation. Once you get the machines down and you understand them, you probably don’t need a whole lot of assistance from a personal trainer as long as you’re confident going in by yourself. In your situation, since you haven’t worked out before, you will likely see results regardless of what you do. So, a personal trainer initially may not be necessary. As you continue to improve and advance, you may choose to reach out to a personal trainer in several months to help you get to the next level or to achieve the next goal. The nice thing about people who are brand new to working out is that they achieve goals very quickly because the body adapts to the new stimulus rapidly. The longer someone works out, the more difficult it is to reach goals since there is less improvement to be made. Like I said, just going to a gym and be completely transparent with them. Tell them your goals, told him exactly what you told me, he would like to lose some weight and begin a fitness routine. With that being said, they will show you the proper machines you will need in order to achieve your goals. Feel free to take all the time you need with that person with the orientation. Don’t feel stupid what if you need to ask a lot of questions. Trust me, the machines can be very overwhelming. There are a lot of buttons and gadgets and I would be willing to bet most people I don’t even know what the majority of the buttons do. Again, feel free to approach that person a couple times throughout the first few visits for more information. Trust me, people are always asking questions at the gym and how to use machines. Other than the initial orientation of the machines, you may just choose to start working out on your own, like I said, you should see results relatively quickly provided you’re working out regularly. I think you’re going to find that everyone at the gym is going to be very impressed with you. The fact that you’re at the gym and you’re visually impaired is a huge deal. Most people can’t believe that I go to the gym as much as I do and that I am blind. They think it is so fascinating and they’re impressed with me, I feel that they will also be very impressed with you. I hope this information was helpful, again, please feel free to reach out to me with any questions that you have. I am always here to help and answer questions for you. Thanks again for reaching out to me and for watching this video. Talk to you again soon,. Matt
