1:42 On Thursday Oct 19, 1993, the day this episode first aired, I had never heard of NYPD Blue. That afternoon, a friend and I were on a Mountain Bike ride and he mentioned this great, new Cop Drama and suggested I check it out. That night, I got home late from a Meeting 😉 and tuned in just in time to hear these Bagpipes, my first ever NYPD Blue scene.

I went through your collection starting at the first one you uploaded down there at the bottom, it's taken me weeks...thanks for doing this, I remember this series and was a big fan back in the day.

Probably my most watched scene. Great acting and incredible cinematography with the raising of the cámara into the sunset over the New York suburb. The pipes remind me of several funerals for fallen brothers on our Department.

I remember the first time I saw this scene. That music, the look on Kelly’s face, the skyline at sunset. I was like “this ain’t a TV show, it’s a movie”. So beautiful.

One of the best endings in the entire 12 year run. Always loved blues representation of the Irish within the force. Mike post score in many episodes highlighted that too.

I just finished watching this entire episode about 30 minutes ago. It's called "Emission Accomplished." It's from season 1, episode 5. It's a fantastic episode which naturally leads into this climatic scene. The ending puts a lump right in my throat. Well done, NYPD Blue. Well done.

As a cop, I understand the pain this man feels. He did what he had to in order to be true and faithful to the job. He backed his badge and I have all the respect in the world for em. What he went through as far as being exiled to IAD is not the norm anymore where I work, thank God. Most of the time, the bad one is gone and the good one stays where he is and that's the way it should be.

One of my favorite scenes from one of the best for seasons of any show ever produced for television. And it still holds up all these decades later. A testament to how much talent and TLC went into it.

One of the best scenes David Caruso ever did in this show. I wish he'd stayed till the end. Still among the top five or fewer T.V. shows I would watch in reruns again. A whole lot more human interest drama and a hell of a lot less "guns drawn" b.s.

One of the first episodes.. Martinez was going to have to wear a wire against a veteran cop/ crooked landlord where an older man had died from a handrail loosened. A building martinez’ brother lived. Old Irish cop Mitchell Ryan and kelly ended up wearing the wire to save Martinez from being labeled so early in his career as a rat and that he’d wear a wire against another cop. The bag piping officer never was liked again just because of his reference of turning in the guy taking money and he could only do the bagpipes at the cemetery.. never at an official ceremony.

That scene - that skyline scene. It reminds me of when I’d visit NYC often enough to feel like I was getting to know a few neighborhoods pretty good…didn’t need to look at the map on the subway, remembered where to cross to avoid where the pedestrian traffic would get thick, even had a spot that I considered my own where I’d sit and watch people. All that happened around the time of the Sorenson years on the show but for some reason, that skyline scene brings it back too - the feelings I had…the excitement, the sense I was coming into my own, the pride of knowing enough about the city that I felt like less of a tourist…less of someone from two hours away. Maybe it’s like when someone can hold a conversation in a foreign language or when a kid can first balance without the training wheels. It was the edge of something big that was coming into reach enough to hold a bit of it. I watch that scene and, while it’s long ago and wont come back, I feel it again. Honest to God - for a few seconds, I feel it again! And I smile.

It's one of the best TV series ever!! I've watched the whole thing as it aired back then, i own the whole DVD set, and I have streamed it front to back...
I just started rewatching it last night for the 4th time. I swear, it gets better every time! This scene, in particular, is amazing!
I'm retired Army. At one point in my career, my office was across the street from the JKF Special Warfare Center & School at Ft. Bragg (Ft. Liberty). Right next store was the JFK Memorial Chapel. When they brought home fallen servicemen, we'd go outside and salute as they passed! The piper would hit those pipes in such a way that it makes your heart pound!
This scene has the same effect!
Did any of you understand the name of this song?

In 1993, NYPD blue was very risque. I'm just now re-watching the series, which we watched live in the 1990's. It still holds up very well. Except for the shaky camera opening scene shots. I'm glad that didn't survive!

All faiths cemetery in Middle Village, Queens NY. Famous for a large memorial to the victims of the General Slocum steamboat fire of 1904 in the East river. Most were women and children. 61 unidentified victims are buried under the memorial. NEVER FORGET. He mentions a cop robbing a dead guy and during the rescues some boat owners demanded payment from drowning people to be rescued. Some just took jewelry from the victims and pushed them back into the water. Shameful that lowlifes still exist today.

The great and immortal first season of NYPD Blue - don't tell me it got better after David Caruso left. This was a masterpiece of a show then. Every episode, you had no idea where it was going, and each one written like a finely carved jewel. The John Kelly character was the soul of the show. After Caruso left, after four more brilliant episodes in Season Two, the show became overly sentimental, more obvious, and soap operatic. Still very good, at times, because Dennis Franz is a brilliant actor, but never this great again. It lost its diamond hard poetry. It lost its true to life drama. And it lost its soul. Here it is in this clip.

For years, I've been trying to put my thoughts into the words that explain how season 1 was different from all other NYPD Blue seasons. No doubt it was a fantastic show with an historic 12 year run. After Smits left, it was never quite as good. Sipowicz was a great character, but all of the misfortune that happened to him over the course of the series became unbelievable. No person endures that must tragedy in such a short period of time. As good as the content was, the writers were reaching for stories. Back to my initial sentence. Your entire comment nails it. The show was never as good after season 1.
