I keep my saw clean. Almost to the point you can eat off of them. After every use, I clean, resharpen them and refuel them, ready to go, again, should I need them. Every now and then, I pull the starter and shroud and blow out these areas. I replace parts before the can give me problems, e.g spark plugs, fuel filters, air filters, fuel lines, etc. I see saws all the time that look like they were used to plow a 50 acre field, chains that are so dull they would not cut hot better and bars with such big burrs they will cut your fingers. I even saw one saw, last week, that was filled with diesel and a nice little Stihl 025 that got so hot it smoked the pto side case - the sprocket was actually welded to the case. Folks, these days, just do not take care of their equipment, let alone properly maintain them. I am old school.

@ 17:40 May I suggest turning the crescent wrench over. Work against the fixed jaw. (I could hear my Dad's voice; may he rest in peace) Many ajustable wrenches have a arrow on the handle for direction of use. Wrench will work smoother and last a lot longer. I have one to " get running again" and am not looking forward doing the tear down now after seeing that one. I know now that its probably just like yhat one. As far as a flywheel puller is concerned, I will be making one out of bar stock and tap and die. Anyone that works on small engines sooner or later learns they sometimes need to make a tool. Its not my first rodeo making a special puller for a weed wacker or other engine. A steering wheel puller works with modifications also.
i have seen and worked on way worse plugged up chainsaws, weed eaters and mowers than that and thats bad! #1 cause for failure is dirt and heat on any small engine then oil/grease build up is just as bad! great work!

Saw doesn't appear to have much run time when you look at the exterior. The fine sawdust caked at the flywheel tells me the saw has been used with a dull chain a lot. A dull chain puts premature wear on the entire saw and the operator. Nice comprehensive video, thanks.

I use a fine 3-stone hone...you have to be careful not to get to fast or too high up on the transfer ports. A ball hone would be better, but then you have to keep lots of sizes laying around!
"Normal" depends on your point of view...it's normal if the saw is packed with sawdust, but Homelite didn't engineer them to boil fuel. It's amazing what a coupe seasons of cutting will deposit into the cooling passages!
..I've found that, most often, that fine, powdery stuff(mixed with oil) built up like that, is usually largely caused by someone who often runs their saw with a dull chain..producing powder instead of chips..chips don't build up nearly that bad...that fine stuff stops up oilers, gets into the carbs, too..and usually, means that the saw has been over-revved/over speeded a lot...yep, running a dull chain is bad all the way around...

Leon, the homelite flywheel puller is the main bar steel or aluminum? I'm assuming the end that is in your hand has the larger hole which would allow you to connect it to a flywheel but let a socket pass through in order to loosen the flywheel nut? thanks. From the looks of the paint it doesn't look like the saw has much time on it, the dust I'm guessing is the power of a dull chain trying to cut through a 4" branch, plus takes out a cylinder when it overheats.

Ive got one thats stupid clean got very little run time on it bcuz dumb dumb i got it from set the half throttle n let it rust stuck on so it rev to the moon so they stopped using it on top of that they had the wrong chain on it so it fucked up the bar n sprocket got like 5 or 6 chips of paint missing on the bottom of it she a runner cant wait get it pullin chain again
thanks for the video. I acquired an super xl923 that is very dirty, possibly dirtier than that saw. I'd like to illuminate the points and put on one of those after market electronic ignitions on. The cylinder is in great shape. The other issue i'll have is it didn't come with a carb and they are tough to find those old tillotson hs carbs. Either way, i'm convinced to get this going.
I was given a Mac 10-10. It sat in a paint shop for years and was covered in metal grinding. I cleaned and blew it of with air so I could touch it. Cleaned out the gas tank, put a little gas in the tank and carb and it started right up. What is the best way to clean it?

Very carefully. Recently I've taken to setting a socket, deep enough so the crank doesnt stick out , on there, pry up on the flywheel lightly and smack the socket a medium strenghth whack. It works ! Before doing all this, squirt the crankshaft with penetrating oil and go get a cup of coffee.
The ring grooves have little pins that keep them from turning on the piston- those go opposite the exhaust port. Also the closed end of the wrist pin goes toward the exhaust port side.

Great vid I always try to blow the saw out when I sharpen the chain helps to keep the saw dust from building up.
No doubt that a compressed air blow gun is a chainsaw's best friend.

I found a New Homelite 47 at my Moms sitting in the barn started it runs great , it must be about 35 years old or even older .
Nothing a bit of preventative maintaince wouldn't cure.

The scope of something like this is roughly $120. If the cylinder can't be salvaged, that goes up much closer to $200, IF I can find the parts.

Do you port saws as well?
Does the piston go in any direction? I think i read that the dot on the piston head goes toward the driven side or chain side. toward the intake side.
