Honestly? Good on you for wanting to switch up the type of content you put out. I’ve seen way too many youtubers stuck in a loop of uploading the same content because that’s what their audience wants, and when they try to upload something different, it performs horribly and youtube makes sure you know it did. Its unfortunate but lets hope it isn’t the case for your channel. I’ll always be a fan of the funny crab man :)
I really liked how you used your Frozen 2 video to shout out Klaus. It definitely didn’t fly under the radar, but it was still overshadowed by the usual players and since it’s a movie that means a lot to me, I really appreciated it.
I’m a child of the animation industry, my father worked at Pixar up until the recent layoffs. He’d wanted to get away from the studio for a while now, not anticipating to stay there for the 19 years he did. Now he’s making smaller projects and working on things he likes. Don’t spend your life working for something that will spit in your face, spend it doing something you love. Animation is such a colorful and diverse medium that deserves to be explored, finding works from people like my dad and movies mentioned in this video, and beyond. I’ll be waiting for your 2025 releases, hungry for more.
What is your dad's opinion about how Pixar treats it's employees nowadays? I imagine is pretty negative. Also cool that he has taken the layoff as an opportunity to get smaller but more artistic endeavors, I have seen many people who lose their way and never return to make the passionate things they did earlier in their career.
I'm aspiring to working in the animation business, and I too am excited to see the wider variety of animation! I've been wanting to see more, seeing most mainstream studios work in 3D while my passions lie in 2D.
4:38 "A statement that the *brand* of Moana is more important than the *story* of Moana" You just put succinctly the feeling I've had from Disney movies for a decade now.
Living in NZ I kept seeing the marketing saying “oh wow look at us showing Māori culture and dubbing it in Māori” and it made me so mad. Virtue signalling much? 😫
As a gamer and a theatre kid who just happens to love animations, I am a huge fan of this new direction of the channel! And I’m total on board for you to only talk about obscure movies because this feel like a natural progression for your channel and I’m 100% gonna stick around for you and your content!
I Saw The TV Glow is genuinely life changing. It's made me realize that I don't care what happens to me if I display who I am, I will be me, unapologetically.
I just wanna say thank you for the last half of the video. I’m so tired of people using the same popular American animated movies to make the argument that “Animation is cinema” or “Animation is not a genre” but they never try to branch out and search for more obscure properties. Animation as an art form has a rich history that branches out across the world and even before Disney that most people just aren’t interested in. I much appreciate your attempt branch out from the typical western companies in search of other more obscure projects.
Yeah exactly. People deciding whether the medium of Animation or just capital C Cinema in general lives or dies depending on what Hollywood or the big three animation studios are making when there's all sorts of interesting animated and live action projects happening all over the world is just being so myopic. Disney's already gotten its reward so to speak, so I'd rather stop demanding more from a studio that's long gone complacent when there's all sorts of visually and thematically interesting shit out there too.
"typical western companies" you mean typical american companies lol, the shounen battle slop that people think is the only form of anime gets more traction than animation from any non-american western country
No seriously, as someone studying animation in college sometimes I get irritated with just how little people are willing to step into other waters and explore the world of animation from other countries like there’s so much incredible stuff out there like from Masaki Yuusa that deserves more recognition in our part of the world
yeah, i would love to see more movie reviewers talk about movies and stuff that aren't hollywood, remind people that there are other options out there but i guess that probably wouldn't bring in as big of an audience
Considering the film was originally meant to be a show, it makes sense they'd want to tease the villain throughout before showing him in preparation for the second season.
I feel the same way. The design of him and his implementation just screams "I'm the villain revealed halfway through season 1." I think the end credits scene was used just because they've learned how useful they were when the MCU was in its prime
I gotta respect bro’s balls. He accidentally built a massive core audience that he doesn’t really appreciate from a content standpoint and now he’s trying to change it with actual care.
I'm so happy to hear James is focusing on giving underrated animated films more attention This channel opened my eyes to what animation could be in my college days It showed me that films from my childhood had more meaning then I have credit to and it justified my emotional reactions to so many of them. But hearing how he's going to be focusing on giving more attention to non mainstream animated films and some live action ones as well Feels like the channel is growing up with the rest of us Im really thankful I found this channel even if it was by accident
I think my dream Schaff video would be a ranking of Ace Attorney cases. There’s so much to unpack in that franchise and I feel like it would be the perfect mix of genuine appreciation for art and rage.
Seconded! I love Ace Attorney so much. I played it all through middle and high school, and I own all the DS games. I'm glad Investigations got an official translation, but the fan names will always be the "official" names to me 😊
Tamatoa is so much more associated with Schaffrillas Productions than Moana that when I looked at the thumbnail, my immediate thought when seeing the crab was that he was representing James in some way, not... you know, the actual character from the movie which is the subject of the video. What has society become?
As someone who doesn’t have as much exposure to obscure or underrated animation, please talk more about them! Even though mainstream animation gets more views, I think the issue of animation right now is that too many people (me included) don’t know what else there is to offer.
Don’t be afraid to branch out and create what you truly love to make! Your fans love to see you do what you love. I watch because you’re an entertaining person, not because you talk about animated kids movies.
i saw the tv glow is my movie of the year !!!! i genuinely had a panic attack in the middle of the theater when i first watched it hah. it hit too hard, but its so wonderfully paced and visually stunning plus the soundtracks one of the best ive heard this year. absolutely gutwrenching movie if youre closeted id kill to see it in a huge theater again
In fairness, that was kinda the point. The point of that segment wasn't really to recommend stuff that you've already seen, but to recommend stuff that you explicitly haven't seen before.
Thank you. As someone who is very passionate about animated cinematography, I appreciate so much the stuff you said at the end of the video. People stop at mainstream stuff and miss the greatest creatives of the industry, and it takes a lot of guts to admit that you might have been part of that process. Props to you for doing your best to introduce your audience to new stuff.
I always get confused when people say it's been a bad year for (insert media). A lot of people don't realize or appreciate there is so much content out there, if you are willing to look outside of the mainstream
I'm looking forward to seeing how far you'll go. I've noticed more passion behind your musical and video game reviews, and I'm happy you're shifting a little more towards the topics you love most, I also appreciate that you're going to start recommending lesser known animated stuff. Many of these, especially Flow and Tux and Fanny deserve so much more attention. I'll always enjoy you and your channel wherever it goes.
Honestly I think the stuff you said towards the end of the video had really changed my outlook on some stuff. I’ve always viewed the mainstream stuff as all there is for films (other media too, like games). So when I see bad mainstream films in a year, I just use that as a representation of the overall quality of films in a year. But in reality I’m doing myself a great disservice not branching out and finding stuff that aren’t in the mainstream because of big companies filling that space with films made to grow their bank (with a slim chance of it also being quality).
Yeah, I think it’s good to look for well made and or unique movies instead of paying so much attention to the bad movies because when people focus only on bad stuff, they miss out on some truly amazing movies
13:58 I relate to this entire sentiment so hard, but specifically for video games. I’ve been a huge indie advocate for years, and recently there’s been a lot of people saying “video games are dying” because they only pay attention to the stuff coming out from Triple A businesses, when indies are right there, thriving as the backbone of the industry and continuing to push the creative envelope for games as a whole. Even outside of that statement I know a lot of people who only really play Nintendo games (and/or are upset with how Nintendo treats their fanbase) who I wish could get into more indie game stuff for basically the same reasons you’ve mentioned about animated films.
people say videogames are dying while i have probably a hundred games i want to try out and even more i want to replay lol, stepping out of your usual comfort zone can introduce you to a lot of cool new things
The thing about indies is they're even more hit and miss than the usual big games released every year. For every beautiful, passionate and well made indie game you see out there, you'll see 500 other indie games that are just. There. And then 500 more that are just bad. And then a good 200 more that are equally as empty hearted as the countless AA and AAA games coming out every year, who only put out games to milk a small indie franchise that wasn't even that popular in the first place.
I like that the self-introspection here kinda falls squarely in the "man some of my audience is stupid" And yeah, the box office of animation in general kinda confirms it. Go off king.
i'm interested in where your channel will go! i found your channel for your videos on musicals. i love animation so i enjoy seeing your thoughts on them, but your musical videos were always my favorites. the passion you have for them matches my own and OOOO IT'S SO NICE! i also really love video games. so fucking much!! you and arlo got me to play (and LOVE) pikmin! i love watching your videos on those. i also really enjoy your persona videos despite not having interest in the games myself (at least for now) i just enjoy hearing you talk about things you enjoy! i've been subscribed to this channel for 5 or 6 years? i don't see myself leaving any time soon despite things changing here. wish you the best!
Love that you are branching out. If the main stream slop continues then anime movies and others doing well won’t remain one offs at the box office. If Houseki no kuni can lead to into the spider verse changes are possible.
This is so refreshing to hear. It can be very easy to miss independent works because very few people discuss them in comparison to the major studio stuff. I am seriously looking forward to these new recommendations you're planning. Also, Flow is very good. A small locally owned theater I live near showed it and that was one of my favorite moviegoing experiences of the year. The film is visually stunning and was incredibly successful at developing meaningful moments without dialogue. It is totally worth the watch.
Absolutely. A lot of my favorite films are mainstream animation and I think they can be just as good and artistically important as obscure animation, mainstream liveaction, and non mainstream live action. But if you really wanna explore the realm of film or animation you need to branch out further than just a single pool (granted I mostly watch television recently).
Three other movies that are free on TH-cam are Paprika, Millennium Actress and Tokyo Godfathers. Wonderful films directed by the late Satoshi Kon and some of my favorite movies, hell Millennium Actress was the first ever movie steelbook I bought
6:25 I honestly feel like this is literally dishonouring bluesky by literally resurrecting them without bringing back anyone from the original studio. Oh well, it’s just classic Money chasing Disney :/
Like... is it gonna be the 64th Walt Disney Animation Studio movie (probably higher then that actually) or will it be made by another animation studio ?
Utena SPOTTED. I'm pleasantly surprised at how many of the other animated features you showed I had watched or had heard of/recognised. I am very eager to watch Flow it looks beautiful.
honestly the last half of this video is sooo refreshing. it's fun to analyze mainstream animated media and media in general, but I've also really felt a need to branch out and analyze more unknown media and projects. it'd be lovely if you also branched out and talked more about all kinds of media! not just animated, just whatever. use your platform for good >0
The upside of Moana 3 is that it’ll likely start production as a theatrical film and not a show. It was also recently stated that Jared Bush, the writer of both Moana movies, had the idea to turn the show into a sequel.
10:58 supporting you fully on this new era,, in the state of animation it’s important to support smaller studios and releases. I like your mainstream content a lot! but im also open to new perspectives!!
It's actually really nice to see you acknowledge your place in animation discourse and actively push against it. Some people really do like to rag on you just because you yell about dehydration guns or whatever else, but like, it's funny. And more importantly, anyone who watches more videos from your channel other than the ones that go super viral and spawn the memeable out-of-context clips know that stuff like that is just an act and certainly isn't your sole focus. You're a super smart guy, James, and I respect your desire to wanna break out of the mainstream animation bubble and bring others with you. I'll be along for the ride regardless but hopefully you can convince some other animation-only people to branch out and try more things. Best of luck to you! And hopefully Moana 2.8 Director's Cut will be the start of the glorious Tamatoa arc.
I also in general think it's weird that he gets lumped in as an animation reviewer, despite covering a wide array of topics. I guess because the animation videos are the ones that do the best, but it only takes a couple seconds of looking at the recent videos to realize he's talked about way more besides Disney and Dreamworks movies.
Someone can look even farther back and see the same thing! I remember Schaff’s old videos (feels weird to call them old, but I guess when a lot of them are 4-6 years old, you have to) and along with the animation/Marvel/Star Wars stuff, there were Zelda game analyses, videos on plays like Twisted or the other Star Kidz theater stuff, video game analyses in general, etc. People who think that this channel is only animation-centric haven’t look back farther than a year, or maybe just ignore that the content has always been diverse.
@@fishinwizard6 There's also the fact that, going as far back to his Shrek 2 video, when discussing examples of good sequels, he mentioned Aliens, Blade Runner 2049, and The Dark Knight as examples, alongside Toy Story 2 (as well as saying that Whiplash was his favorite movie of all time). I guess Animation is Cinema people just ignored those parts entirely.
I'm actually so glad your making this decision with your channel. I understand you make some of the videos you make for the sake of views and I get the hustle, but like you said in the second half; there's so much more to animation than what makes it to the theatres. You will bring excitement to my 2025 with this new content, and of course with your passion videos as well.
Honestly the amount of self awareness shown in the latter half of the video is impressive, because it shows that even you are aware of how much your reputation as a “Animation TH-camr” basically proceeds you at this point. And wanting to move on from that label and even trying to make up for your incidental influences on your audience is great, as it is true that there has been a loud minority of people who treat animated films like that.
A few animated films currently on TH-cam -The Adventures of Prince Achmed (1926, the oldest animated film ever made) -The Tale of the Fox (1937) -A Midsummer Nights Dream (1959) -Princes and Princesses -Tower (2016 documentary) -Interface -Comet in Moominland Other Recommendations: -Wasteland & Barber Westchester by Jonni Peppers. (Previously on TH-cam, but can be bought for pretty cheap) -The Girl from the Other Side -Blood Tea and Red String -Boy and the World 🇧🇷 -Ernest and Celestine -Liz and the Blue Bird 🐦 (the best thing i've ever seen in my life)
Also on youtube, animated movies I like: The Tragedy of Man by Marcell Jankovics!! It's on there with English subtitles Allegro non Troppo The Soviet Treasure Island movie Opera Imaginaire Alice (1988) The Flying Luna Clipper The Amazing Mr. Bickford The Treasure Planet (bulgarian) The Mouse and His Child Heaven and Earth Magic Sita Sings the Blues We Are the Strange Killer Bean Forever (a bit sillier but it was animated by one guy and doesn't look too bad for it) The Thief and the Cobbler recobbled cut West and Soda Watership Down (yeah that movie with the bunnies dying, it's good) The Secret of the Third Planet
Hey Schaff, I know you probably won't see this but.... As someone who used to only watch mainstream animated media, I started watching your videos. And like many of us, I started from your Megamind video, and then your rankings, and then one of your "Best of" videos, with all of your movie reccomendations. And recently, I watched Lady Bird for the first time, remembering your video about it and it genuinely changed my life. See, I have a pretty estranged relationship with my mom, because of mutual actions during my childhood. But this movie, this ending spoke to me in a way that nothing else had, in a mature, in depth and nuanced way. So I reached out to my mom, and we are repairing the foundations of what was previously broken and I just want to say thank you, so much. Thank you for leading me down the path of recconnecting to my mother, and thank you for pushing your audience to try new things.
So excited that you're making videos about more obscure animated movies! As an animation student it was lovely to see which films I recognized (espescially La Casa Lobo, my personal favorite). Can't wait for the full video so I can learn about some news ones
Based on his Letterboxd account and a few TH-cam videos, it's clear that Schaff is familiar with Cartoon Saloon. I think the only reason why he hasn't made a ranking is because they only have 6 movies, so it wouldn't be as interesting to see a list comparing them as, say, 9 to 12 movies.
@ yes it may be short but it will be worth it when he sees most of the cinematic master pieces they made. I say most because ik there is one that he will absolutely put in last place involving a dragon that is kinda annoying
Cartoon Saloon’s catalog is probably too small to make an entire ranking video out of. Maybe an entire video ranking every film published by GKIDS (excluding films from Studio Ghibli) would probably make for a more interesting ranking video. The reason I brought up GKIDS is because they published a few Cartoon Saloon films.
Schaff, your ranking of the best animated feature winners is the reason I first watched a Ghibli film. And then a few years later I watched them all and really began to understand that animation is bigger than the big American companies. At least for me, you helped open up the world of cinema! This is video is a great reflection on your channel. I share the sentiment about finally letting these big american companies go and focusing our attention on smaller indie animation!!
YAY MORE EXPOSURE TO UNDERRATED ANIMATION dude thank you so much because with your large following and your animation recommendations for next year I feel like we’re gonna get so much recognition for so many underrated films god I have been waiting for this for ever!!!, also love the clips of underrated animation you have sprinkled across the video they’re all amazing films!!!,
I'm very excited for your recommendation video next year! But also appreciate how you reiterated your niche and interests here, I understand where you're coming from and look forward to other types of videos from you. Although it'll be easier for me as I've started following your content for the musical theatre videos first and later got into the animated ones, as both of these things are major interests for me.
We really are entering an era where we primarily have to turn to smaller creators for meaningful art whether thats in music, film, games or whatever It simultaneously sucks to see the mainstream go down this path while also being great that so many smaller voices have platforms to spread their work
I don’t think this is true (except for animation). A Real Pain, an absolutely incredible movie mentioned in the video, was a Searchlight film - that’s Disney!
I honestly dont think mainstream was ever interested in creating meaningful art. Sure, sometimes big corps come out with hugely artistic and meaningful stuff, but the primary focus is always money.
@@NQProductions Don't lose hope. This isn't the end of the world, and we are not powerless to prevent more coprorate soulless cash-grabs from being produced. Like Schaff said in the end, there are SO many colorful, artistic, and amazing projects coming out from studios and indie creators. For every terrible movie that comes out of a big budget company, I try to give some love to a smaller creator just to even out the animation-karma, so to speak. You should do the same! I think you'll feel a lot less hollow afterwards :)
No I feel this. It’s awful to see how big animation companies are solely chasing money and that they get rewarded for it, making the likelihood that they’ll course correct even less likely.
It's wild that Moana is being MCU'd when they have Kingdom Hearts at their fingertips. Though I guess it's a good thing that they're not dragging that one to the ground.
I’d assume it’s because the franchise is part owned by square and has tons of lore already which’d be way too complicated for new viewers who haven’t played the games.
Imagine watching a series that adapts Kingdom Hearts up the that one part in 3, then they all actually die and Sleeping Realm Theory is confirmed. Tricked into consuming Kingdom Hearts media that was secretly "new lore" once again.
OMG I cannot wait for these more obscure movie recommendations! I'm excited for this change up Also I feel very snobbish for recognising "Angel's Egg" That is a divine movie
As a musical theatre, videogames and animation fan, I will keep watching whatever videos you decide to make, not because our interests align but also because I see the effort that is made with each video, even when some of them are more low effort than others. They've become kind of my comfort videos while I do chores or when I just chill and want to actually want to watch interenting stuff. So yeah, whatever you choose to do with the channel, I'll be supporting!
True. Almost no other animated movie in the history of Disney or Pixar has ended with a stinger for the next film, neither before or after the credits. Disney and Pixar post credits scenes are usually jokes, not stingers. The only exceptions being the movies like Stitch the Movie, which are pilots for TV series (much like Moana 2) and set the plot of their series in their last scene; and the only movie to have an actual post-credits stinger, which is Lightyear from 2022.
I don't have almost anything in common with Schaffs, but to see how much his channel grows, changes and matures, to learn so much and feel so much here makes me as happy as seeing an old friend. It's genuinely great to see him strive for a good impact on the community, and we'll be here next year, hungry for more. Thank you schaffrillas
I really admire the retrospective attitude you had towards your own work in this video. And as someone who loves animation and wants to get into more indie stuff, I’m looking forwards to your recommendation videos. One animated film I can recommend top of my head for something different is ‘Ruben Brandt, Collector’ a 2018 Hungarian crime drama. It has distinct visuals with an odd ball plot about art thieves, I’ve never seen anyone talk about it
Honestly, I’m glad you’re moving towards more video game stuff. I started watching your stuff cause of animated movies, but I most definitely prefer the video game stuff, since that’s my passion as well
Can’t wait for the post credits scene where Sora and Mickey appear out of a dark corner, with Sora then saying “Moana, we’re going to need your help to defeat the Kingdom Hearts.”
4:59 I'm honestly surprised that on the poster there was no certain someone who went back in time to the first Thanksgiving to get the turkeys off the menu.
as someone who’s very passionate abt animation, I’m glad to hear recommendations about lesser known animated films. It seems like animation nowadays is directed mostly for young audiences and people don’t recognize it as a medium. I’m also really excited to hear your further thoughts on other films and movies! I love listening to your thoughts abt video games, and your pikmin deep dives are what got me into the series! :-)
I actually think adult animation is more mainstream than ever. Look at Arcane and Invincible, or even the Glitch indie shows f.e. That being said, the animation kid-slop def has a bit of the overhand, where the actual good movies are acknowledged but more financially more overlooked.
Pretty happy you added that second section in. 90% of the animation I watch is anime and 5% is shorter stuff on youtube so I don't hear much about western animation apart from the occasional ad and your channel lol.
As a longe time watcher of yours (started following you since you were a fellow Tamatoa fan lol) , I just want to say, as much as I enjoy your mainstream animation videos, I do slightly enjoy your other content (like the Persona, anime and musical theatre) videos a little more so I would be more than happy to see videos of topics you’re passionate about more than the mainstream animation videos 💕I look forward to seeing your content in 2025! Also side note, I think it’s a little funny that some people associate you with Tamatoa more than the actual character in Moana.
I would totally watch an hour or two of Schaffrillas recommending underrated films. This man can talk about anything for 2 hours and make it feel like 10 minutes.
Schaff we love hearing you be passionate. More gaming and musical content. Make whatever your passionate about! We will always enjoy those and will keep giving attention to them! Also your desire to give non mainstream animation and movies some good attention..!
I'm here to say that I support you Schaff, I have listened to your reviews and rankings of animated movies, film director's filmographys and Super Mario Galaxy stars not only because I care about these topics, but also because I respect your opinion and value how well you transmit what you feel. I've gotten incredible recommendations from you, be it Ratatouille (a movie I forgot just how much I loved) or Whisper of the Heart (the first movie that made me cry in years). I even got back into theater after a breakup pushed me away from it years ago all because of your passion for theater as well. You may think what you've said has caused harm, but a lot of people look up to your opinion for a reason, remember that. God bless Schaff, and may you make the most of this new route, love from Panama! 🇵🇦
Schaffrillas, thank you for your honesty. Honestly, you've opened up my eyes a lot with your gaming content as well as your musical theatre content. This is YOUR channel. Make what YOU want and then it is up to us to enjoy it. As for me, I've loved expanding my horizons as I watch the content that you create that is outside of my wheelhouse!
I honestly tune in more often for your gaming takes bc I don't actually agree with your takes on animated films most of the time, but I share your deep love for the gaming franchises you talk about and would love to see that! You've been a joy to watch these past 4 years or so
Tamatoa being one of the main villains of Moana 3 would give him more screen time than he had in the first, so that’s something that could be worth it.
The fact that most parents don't respect their children enough to make sure what they watch isn't slop is much more maddening to me than the providers of said slop
Thank you! It baffles me that parents won’t even bother checking if a movie is good before throwing their kids in front of a screen. It rewards these companies for putting money over quality and their employees.
that's a terrible take. it seems so hard to be a parent especially in todays economy and children's attention spans are shorter than ever. most parents aren't chronically online cinephiles who understand the industry and follow the behind-the-scenes of every animated movie. they see a moana sequel, they assume it's a moana sequel, and that's totally understandable. acting like that somehow means they don't respect their children is totally ridiculous
Thank you for the message at the end. With the mainstream art industry basically imploding overnight throughout this year with the layoffs, crunch, and AI, highlighting art made by down to Earth people with a real vision is so desperately needed, and I genuinely appreciate you not being complacent with the status quo and continuing to evolve as a creator.
This reply will get lost among the sea but Schaff, I really gotta give you props for spending most of this video not thrashing Disney, but instead showin your goals to use your influence to try and get peopl to broaden their horizons.
True, but also as much thrashing Disney already gets it still isn’t even enough, considering they filmed next to a concentration camp in China and are now, ironically but completely unsurprisingly, milking indigenous people for as much money as they can commodify from their culture, all the while most likely contributing to the constant gentrification of places like Hawaii that forces kanaka maoli onto the mainland.
I completely agree with Schaffrillas at the second act. I just finished Jentry Chau vs The Underworld which didn't get marketed at all. My friend recommanded it to me and blue eye samurai, but my addicition to dinosaurs and prehistoric animals always got me going "I'll get to it later." There's so much more to life to movies, shows, and stories you're use to. Go beyond, think about other projects, bigger or smaller. See how they can inspire you.
Jentry Chau was fucking amazing, and i havent seen a single TH-camr even talk about it. Netflix dumped it out and no one cares at all. its one of the best shows ive ever seen.
The rant at the end is so real as a huge animation fan but also a fan of the film media in general there’s sm underrated stuff out there more ppl should watch - legit my fav videos from here are always the top 10 best/worst games and films of the year bc they inspire me to watch or check out what’s on the list that I didn’t already know about - It can be hard to find none main stream media on your own so getting recommendations from this big of a channel would be awesome tbh
Really appreciate the second half of the video! I've noticed that passion for both smaller movies and other art forms you have and its been the things I've looked forward to the most! You were one of the people that put Aftersun on my radar a couple years back and that's ended up becoming one of my all time favorite movies. I'm excited for your future videos, thank you!
Thank you for recommending even more movies! Because of your video earlier this year, i recently watched Hundreds of Beavers with my friends. It has quickly become one of our favorite movies in recent memory.
I really appreciate you for coming out at the end of the video about your waning passion in mainstream animation. Personally, it would be a lot more interesting for you to dive into lesser known animations like the ones you mentioned, as well as indie animations like Amazing Digital Circus or Vivziepop, but really, do whatever your real passion is. While everyone needs a job to survive, real enjoyment never comes out of following what the algorithm wants you to follow. A TH-cam can keep biggering and biggering, but without real passion, they'll never go BEYOND. So go beyond.
From some passing comments in your previous videos, I feel like this is a video you wanted to make for a long time. This may be the most important video that came out this year for this channel, and despite everything said here being obvious, I'm thankful that it's being said. It's this kind of stuff that make me realise with joy that I haven't outgrow your content because it's growing at the same time. Thank you for all the recommandations, while I knew many of the movies presented, you showed me that "Memoir of a snail" exist and I think it looks cool. The videos on Hundred of Beavers and Whisper of the Heart made me discover theses masterpieces, and I look forward into seeing more content on rather niche stuff (well, Ghibli isn't that niche but you get the gist) , because seeing someone being passionate about something I never heard of before may be my favorite thing about TH-cam.
PLEASE TALK ABOUT PERSEPOLIS!!! I first found out about it through your channel and got interested in it, thanks to that i ended up watching it and it was absolutely incredible.
More than happy to watch whatever content you want to do. I'd love to hear more about other movies, animation or games. Also omg PLEASE talk about the French film you had scenes from at the end of your video. I absolutely ADORE The Triplets of Belleville. It was shown on TV here in Canada pretty often when I was a teen and I really want more people to see it. Also if you haven't go find Like the Clouds, Like the Wind and watch it. One of my all time favourite anime films.
In regards to what you said in the second half of the video, I would literally LOVE more content on musical theatre and video games from you. I also know that a ton of animation lovers tend to be really passionate about indie animated stuff that isn’t as well known. Me personally, I would so much rather watch a video on a movie, show, or musical Ive never heard of before instead of another TH-camr complain about a very well known bad movie like Moana 2 or wish, cause then I can actually find something new to watch- and I feel like I’m not alone in this stance, cause isn’t that just what movie lovers do?? Tbh, I feel like in this situation, the fact that there are SO many well known TH-camrs who focus on mainstream animation might benefit you in trying to expand the thing you make videos about. Obviously, I understand you saying you can’t drop mainstream animation videos completely, but at the end of the day (and this goes for any TH-camr, really) i belive that if you make the kind of content that makes you happy, the right audience will come to you.

Why do I get the feeling that maybe Tamatoa and Moana’s ghost (yes she dies) go back in time to the 1st thanksgiving to get turkeys off the menu?
Did you just say that in Moana 5, Tamatoa and Moana's ghost (yes she dies) go back in time to the 1st Thanksgiving to take turkey off the menu???

Tell your dad thank you for me. Artists are what make the world go round. He made my childhood and countless other childhoods possible.
Could you point to some of his smaller projects if he has posted them online yet?

No seriously, as someone studying animation in college sometimes I get irritated with just how little people are willing to step into other waters and explore the world of animation from other countries like there’s so much incredible stuff out there like from Masaki Yuusa that deserves more recognition in our part of the world
yeah, i would love to see more movie reviewers talk about movies and stuff that aren't hollywood, remind people that there are other options out there
but i guess that probably wouldn't bring in as big of an audience
Considering the film was originally meant to be a show, it makes sense they'd want to tease the villain throughout before showing him in preparation for the second season.

We need a Cartoon Saloon ranking, it’ll be the best Animated studio ranking of all
Based on his Letterboxd account and a few TH-cam videos, it's clear that Schaff is familiar with Cartoon Saloon.
And a LAIKA ranking, once their new movie Wildwood comes out of course
Cartoon Saloon’s catalog is probably too small to make an entire ranking video out of. Maybe an entire video ranking every film published by GKIDS (excluding films from Studio Ghibli) would probably make for a more interesting ranking video. The reason I brought up GKIDS is because they published a few Cartoon Saloon films.

We really are entering an era where we primarily have to turn to smaller creators for meaningful art whether thats in music, film, games or whatever
It simultaneously sucks to see the mainstream go down this path while also being great that so many smaller voices have platforms to spread their work
I don’t think this is true (except for animation). A Real Pain, an absolutely incredible movie mentioned in the video, was a Searchlight film - that’s Disney!

Imagine watching a series that adapts Kingdom Hearts up the that one part in 3, then they all actually die and Sleeping Realm Theory is confirmed. Tricked into consuming Kingdom Hearts media that was secretly "new lore" once again.
@ethanshackleton that's why Disney would retcon everything in the lore and start over
OMG I cannot wait for these more obscure movie recommendations!
I'm excited for this change up
Also I feel very snobbish for recognising "Angel's Egg"
That is a divine movie
Now I'm SURE we'll NEVER get our long-awaited Bad Guys review...😢
as someone who’s very passionate abt animation, I’m glad to hear recommendations about lesser known animated films.
I recommend watching 'the breadwinner' and 'my little goat' if you're interested :D
Oil Up, buddy, time to give you a treat
Pretty happy you added that second section in. 90% of the animation I watch is anime and 5% is shorter stuff on youtube so I don't hear much about western animation apart from the occasional ad and your channel lol.
That's a little cringe
As a longe time watcher of yours (started following you since you were a fellow Tamatoa fan lol) , I just want to say, as much as I enjoy your mainstream animation videos, I do slightly enjoy your other content (like the Persona, anime and musical theatre) videos a little more so I would be more than happy to see videos of topics you’re passionate about more than the mainstream animation videos 💕I look forward to seeing your content in 2025! Also side note, I think it’s a little funny that some people associate you with Tamatoa more than the actual character in Moana.
Ok, but SERIOUSLY you have to make a video about ‘the breadwinner’, more people NEED to see it
YES
Thank you! It’s baffling that parents won’t give their kids good movies to entertain them.
that's a terrible take. it seems so hard to be a parent especially in todays economy and children's attention spans are shorter than ever. most parents aren't chronically online cinephiles who understand the industry and follow the behind-the-scenes of every animated movie. they see a moana sequel, they assume it's a moana sequel, and that's totally understandable. acting like that somehow means they don't respect their children is totally ridiculous
Can't say I care we all had a good time
i'm so excited for the direction your channel is going in next year!! i'll definitely be looking forward to more niche recommendations!!
Amusingly I started thinking “start making videos on non-mainstream animation…. like Angel’s Egg!”
And then Angel’s Egg cut.
LET’S GOOOOOOOOO
New channel idea: Acquiring Chickens
Can’t wait for some rando to appear and say “Moana, you have become a part of a much bigger universe, you just don’t know it yet”
My friend recommanded it to me and blue eye samurai, but my addicition to dinosaurs and prehistoric animals always got me going "I'll get to it later."
There's so much more to life to movies, shows, and stories you're use to.
Go beyond, think about other projects, bigger or smaller.
See how they can inspire you.
Jentry Chau was fucking amazing, and i havent seen a single TH-camr even talk about it. Netflix dumped it out and no one cares at all. its one of the best shows ive ever seen.
@Xzeon55 My friend razorrex talked about it on his youtube channel
@@thejurassicwonder2307 hell yeah
13:38
I’ll be anticipating this video, I love finding new obscure or lesser known media to consume
PLEASE TALK ABOUT PERSEPOLIS!!! I first found out about it through your channel and got interested in it, thanks to that i ended up watching it and it was absolutely incredible.
Yo they made a movie based on that book? Good for the author, her book was pretty good
THE PEASANTS (from the filmmakers of The Loving Vincent ) is a subversive masterpiece, the fact the music wasn’t nomineted for the Oscar is a crime
9:04 does this mean we’re getting pikmin videos??
More than happy to watch whatever content you want to do. I'd love to hear more about other movies, animation or games. Also omg PLEASE talk about the French film you had scenes from at the end of your video. I absolutely ADORE The Triplets of Belleville. It was shown on TV here in Canada pretty often when I was a teen and I really want more people to see it. Also if you haven't go find Like the Clouds, Like the Wind and watch it. One of my all time favourite anime films.
Thank God it's from the 90s because modern anime films suck
thank you for that message at the end! i'm looking forward to seeing you make videos you genuinely enjoy
So excited for the schaff indie pivot :) also the your theater stuff is my favorite :)
1:43 Based Transformers One moment
True.
RISE UP!
@ RISE UP!!
*PEW PEW PEW PEW INTENSIFIES*
Schaffrillas isn't gone. He is just evolving.
i can’t wait to keep going with whatever you want schaff! i’m also a video game/musical person, i found your channel from your majora’s mask video, and have stuck around. you also got me into pikmin and i can’t WAIT for the treasure ranking, i promise
i’ve been watching you for years and i cannot express how much i appreciate the 2nd half of your video.
