    Some additional fun facts:
Seaweed soup was actually for the mothers- the iodine helps the production of milk and prevents post pregnancy anemia. Then it became a symbol of birth.. then birthdays
Seaweed soup is actually even tasty just by putting seaweed, water and soy sauce. If you need protein just open a can of tuna. Seaweed soup in 1 minute.
If you really don't need the layered feel in egg rolls you can just mix the mixture with equal parts water and bake it in a bread pan or microwave it for 1.5 minute per medium egg, not covered. Produces a drier, denser egg pudding that tastes exactly like egg rolls if blindfolded.

i liked that you cooked the gyeran mari in a round pan. it's showing everyone that they don't need to run out to buy a rectangular/square plan to get a good roll :)

Yes, that's right! No need to spend money on that square pan - just make it round and then cut off the ends ;-)

Today’s my birthday. I was adopted from Korea when I was 8 months old to live in America. Birthdays have always been extremely hard due to the fact that I don’t have a connection with my first family, motherland or culture. This video was so heartwarming and reassuring. Thank you both for making these videos ❤️❤️ I will definitely be following this recipe for future birthdays

I've been living in Korea for two years already. I'm half Korean and so I've been immersing myself into the Korean culture with the help of my mother's family. On my 27th birthday, I got to experience a Korean birthday for the first time. I did grow up eating seaweed soup back in the States but I never ate it on my birthday growing up. My aunt was kind enough to drop some seaweed soup off at my door the morning of my 27th birthday. Korean families do put a lot of love into making meals for each other. I hope to carry on this tradition.

    • @FutureNeighbor

Something about this video made me feel nostalgic, kinda happy-sad. The world is so insane right now, but the thought of a comforting meal like this with someone you love, wishing you all the best in the world-- it felt good to see. Much love to you guys, and everyone else.

I have such an emotional connection with this soup and wish to be in Korea right now. A good friend who I have lost touch with, would make this every time she saw me. I made this for my son's birthday and plan to make it again for mine on the 24th.

This is such a sweet video. For us who don’t know Korean culture and are very interested in learning more about your country this video was very informative and educational. Thank you for sharing this part of your culture. As you know here in America there is no such a thing as a birthday breakfast culture. The singing of the happy birthday was so so sweet and cute. I really enjoyed watching this video. Thank you so much. Love you both!!

I'm a recent subscriber, but I really enjoy your videos and especially when Katie makes an appearance! The two of you are so charming and fun to watch! I've always been scared to tackle this beautiful rolled egg you see so often, but this video made it look a little less difficult, and so nicely colored with the green onions and carrots! I think I'll give it a try! Thanks Neighbor!

I am adopted from Korea so watching these videos are a great way to learn how to cook Korean food quickly. I love to cook, but a lot of traditional methods take time, which is fine, but in my everyday busy life I can't always eat that way. I prep a lot of food for the week, so making Korean side dishes were easy to get used to.
My best friend growing up was Japanese so I know more about Japanese culture and food. Minus the beef, this was similar to a normal breakfast soup. It's weird for me to think of it as a special birthday soup as I had this for lunch, dinner, and many breakfasts. ... I make it wayyyy too much ^.^ it's so yummy. The whole meal is actually pretty normal for me, minus the roe and choco pie (I don't really like sweets anyway).
Does anyone know why it's specifically for birthdays?

I can’t imagine seaweed. When we were children and our Grandmother thought we were ill, she’d go to the harbor and bring up seaweed. She’d make a strong tea and force it to drink. We never let on if we felt unwell. We knew Boston Harbor seaweed tea was on its way.

I wonder why people put oil with any meats? Meats already have a fats to leak out while cook. I did try when I was 20’s by my ex who always cook very day but it cause me fat real bad. I decided I never put oil in it and always removed leak grease from meats, I didn’t gain. I am glad that I am strict on myself with limit oil. That’s why I ask you a question, why put oil in meats?

I forgot I had watched this video and made a recipe posted elsewhere just this week. It was tasty, but fairly bland. The recipes are similar, but this one did not call for fish sauce & only called for simmering for 15 minutes. I'm definitely trying it with brisket, fish sauce & a 30 minute simmer next time. I really enjoyed it in spite of the blandness (I even added a little Sriracha to a 2nd helping, which helped a lot).
