  • Rev up your engines for the ultimate LEGO Speed Champions 2023 review! In this video, I’m taking a close look at the new McLaren Solus GT & McLaren F1 LM set. While I expected the F1 to steal the show, the Solus GT had a few surprises up its tailpipe too! Not only does it have an impressive and unique design, but it's also packed with great parts for custom-building.
    Join me as I break down both cars and discover why this set is a must-have addition to your LEGO collection.

    One of the interesting things about speed champions, that you noted is that they often include parts on vehicles that they know people are more likely to break down for Mocs, which I really appreciate.

    Like you I mostly bought this set for the F1 LM as it had been my dream car since I was a kid playing the early Need For Speed games and was pleasantly surprised by the build of the Solus GT. The rear wing on the real F1 LM is slightly narrower than the body of the car, and the Lego wing is 7.2 studs wide including the 1x1 brackets and tiles used for the side plates so I think it was likely the most accurate width they could get it without creating any new parts.

    • @svensbricks
      @svensbricks  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep I think you’re right there. It needs to be about another 0,5 stud wider 😂

    Just built this yesterday- such a great set. I might be one of the few that was looking forward to both cars, and the builds definitely didn’t disappoint. It’s so cool seeing so many people giving the solus it’s props despite not necessarily being everyone’s favorite

    I solved the spoiler width problem by adding one thin 1x1 black brick before the smooth one on each end. Makes the Spoiler exactly the width of the car. The Solus was fun to build, but I just don't love it as much as the F1

    Picked this up for $45 AUD (~ $28.66 EUR) yesterday only to complete my speed champs collection, didn't really give it another thought until this video, might have to grab another set so I can build it.

    I haven't bought this yet, but I will for the f1. Like the speed champions now that they are 8 stud wide, I have a few of the old 6 stud wide ones and they look weird, but I think I may buy more of them now.

      @svensbricks  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve made a few videos about converting the old 6 stud cars to the new 8 stud format. There’s also free instructions available for a few with more to come 😃

    Recently bought the Pagani Utopia and a second GTR R34 set (for modding purposes) as my local go-to store for lego sets didn't have this one in stock unfortunately, otherwise it would have been my first buy lol
    Hopefully they will get it in the coming weeks. (Oh the joy of collecting Lego in Australia)
    I will say that while I'm not the biggest fan of the Solus it's nice to see that it is a lot more unique than it looks.
    My only major frustration with this set (like most it would seem) is the headlights of the F1 LM.
    I understand it can be tricky for the designers to work with a limited range of bricks at their disposal but I feel this is one of the few cases where I actually would have preferred the trial of more stickers to place or even a printed tile or two to fully flesh out that iconic shape rather than the simple brick built design.
    Simple prints/stickers above and below the current brick built headlights would have been a better choice imo
    The brick built headlights work for the Countach because the Countach had more rectangular headlights, however this doesn't translate to the iconic shape of the F1 because the F1 has a more flowing and curvy design for the headlights.
    I'm not particularly mad and it's still a great set, I just feel a little dissatisfied by the headlights?
    Wonderful review though, can't wait to get my hands on this one soon when it comes it, so thank you for the sneak peek

    • @svensbricks
      @svensbricks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment. Yeah I guess they can’t please everyone. Personally I think the headlights are pretty good for the scale and the car is definitely recognisable

      @@svensbricksThought I'd come back and give a reply as I finally got my hands on this set yesterday and just finished it after work today.
      I must say that it certainly looks better in person than through the screen if that makes sense, though now I wish they tried a similar "illusion" for the headlights as they did the Countach, I feel it would've worked really well for the F1 LM.
      I do still feel they could've added a tiny bit more to the stickers above the headlights to give them more shape (I might be a little picky, and I somehow didn't realize there were stickers there in the first place so my apologies if I sounded a little silly about that lol) however I'm definitely no longer dissatisfied like I was when I first commented now that I'm holding this thing in my hand.
      Overall the F1 LM looks fantastic and I think it even takes the favourite vehicle spot of this wave from the Pagani Utopia.
      As for the Solus I was quite surprised, a very unique build and some of the techniques used were very intriguing, definitely makes for a nice display piece too.
      Overall I'm still quite blown away by the F1 LM, I feel that you really need to see it in person to understand just how fantastic it looks as viewing it in promo images and videos really doesn't compare.
      Anyway, sorry for my little ramble, though thank you for reading

    I am on a work trip and just built this set in my hotel tonight. It's incredibly good.
    The build for the solus was so well paced and engaging. Great video!
    I'm in the minority wherein I'm not a massive F1 fan, but I certainly respect the incredible effort LEGO put into this set and the price is right for this one

    • @svensbricks
      @svensbricks  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Many thanks for taking the time to comment. Did you buy the set for the Solus GT then considering that you’re not a huge F1 fan?

    • @onecleverpig

      @@svensbricks thank you for the reply! I am actually a fan of the solus as I am a big gran Turismo fan. I am a pretty big McLaren fan in general. I still have a ton of respect for the McLaren F1, but the design isn't particularly interesting for me. Whereas something like the p1, in my opinion, has a beautiful design to match the hypercar performance, if that makes sense

    There is one more good thing that this set contains which is:
    1. It is a double pack meaning it has more parts for custom MOC building and more possibilities for creating alternate builds.

    This set is growing on me. The Solus looks pretty cool however the F1 only just about does the job, the headlights which are very distinctive on the real car aren't very well captured by Lego, they look way too small

    • @svensbricks

      Agree with you on the headlights but at this scale I’m not sure it’s possible to improve them with compromising something else

    I don't like the front of the Solus GT. It's far too bulky/blocky and doesn't really give the same feel as the original in my opinion.

    • @svensbricks
      @svensbricks  ปีที่แล้ว

      At this scale and considering they have to ensure the model is sturdy enough, I’m not sure they could have made it better

    Solid review, my thoughts exactly the same when I first saw this. Having built the set last night I'm delighted with the outcome. The F1 is Devine and I'm blown away with the amount of space that the new chassis has allowed in the cockpit. The solus has really grown on me and was such an intricate build, Batman wouldn't look out of place in this car. Overall one of the best double packs so far IMO. Great content Sven, new sub here👍
