What is Neuro Physio all about?

  • Hi everyone my name is Masud and in today’s video I’ll be explaining what neurological physiotherapy is all about.
You can use this information to improve your understanding about what physios do.
So neuro physiotherapists are specialists who usually work with those who have had a neurological impairment which has impacted their ability to carry out activities of daily living.
They may have been fully independent before and now because of their injury may need the attention of a physiotherapist to help manage their symptoms or improve to a level where they are more able to complete certain activities to help improve their quality of life or just maintain their current level.
The person may have had parkinson’s, a stroke or some sort of spinal cord injury as a result of a sporting injury or something else traumatic.
Their balance is affected or their coordination is off slightly, or perhaps it’s their fine or gross motor skills that need work.
Maybe it’s their range of movement in their limbs or they may need a physios help to improve their muscle strength.
Another thing is spasticity - a symptom of people who have had cerebral palsy (brain impairment) is muscular contractures where because their muscles have not been lengthened because of their rigidity (symptom of cerebral palsy) because of their impairment it has caused shortening of their muscles.
And therefore it can be quite tricky to mobilise and do things. This is where a physiotherapist would passively help to stretch the patients limbs to improve their muscular strength or perhaps aid in giving an orthotic or aid to help with walking.
Generally speaking neuro specialist physios work with patients on a more longer term basis and I would say have a deeper relationship with their patients because of this compared to an outpatients physio for instance but at the end of the day they are improving the quality of someone’s life which is key.
As a physiotherapist student you will have the opportunity to do a neuro placement if you ever wanted to study physiotherapy. Usually you get a chance to experience every main area of physio whilst you are a physio.
Hope that helped you and you learnt something new.
    Thanks for watching.

IMO neuro physio is the best because it is the place where the physio makes a real tangible difference in rehabbing the patient

I'm currently in neuro placement, seeing a patient who had a stroke or some sort of traumatic brain injury. I'm surprised how I really enjoyed my placement right now, really thinking about going into community rehab(neuro), do you have any tips n tricks to specialised in neuro after I qualified. Really enjoyed your content!!!!!

How would you get a job in neuro physio after completing rotations?

Look for job openings on nhs jobs or you may get word at the trust you’re working at of a post that’s coming up because someone’s going on maternity leave etc. And just apply :)

Hi Harsha, good question. Neuro physios don’t differ anyway in their pay. It would still be under the nhs bandings.
Have a watch of this video where I explain more (it has a link to nhs bandings thresholds for salary): th-cam.com/video/28iD8v9mvu0/w-d-xo.html

But I did watch that video couple of times ,I just couldn't figure out on which band does MSK and NEURO PHYSIO'S come under.

@@harshavardhan3297 The banding does not depend on the type, all the tpes can be at the different bands

Do a masters for study in neuro and do a few rotations as a band 5 in the nhs then apply for a static band 5 neuro post in the nhs ?.. that sounds about right.
