Whoa... I spotted that character a couple of times back in the day, but always assumed it was just some random hippie friend of Neil's who'd crashed there. Pretty normal stuff for a student house, to find strange people sitting around and have no idea who (if anyone) invited them! But I never realised it was the SAME guy sat there in all those different episodes :-o
I never noticed the extra character on the original airings or even when I had the show on VHS. It was only when I bought the dvds that it caught my eye and freaked me out a bit that the figure was in plain view every episode!!! I say it's the ghost of a previous tenant who lives off the manic energy of the residing, living tenants.
Can't believe I hadn't noticed him/her in Boring when the old man walks out of the cupboard, the others are easy to miss or assume it was a random party guest.

But when this person is hidden in the shadows / behind things, you start to be a lot more shocked when you notice it, and probably overthink it too.
I think nobody really notices him because he blends in with the backround. Like the think hes wearing kind amakes him look like wallpaper or something and then the hair kind of makes him look like a plant. Also the house usualy is a mess so you dont pay attention to the crazy stuff in the backround
The '5th housemate' is more than likely Lise Mayer, which would have paid her for the (albeit silent) role, in much the same way the production got more funding by being a 'variety' show with bands guesting. A bit surprised this is still a mystery, though.
They did like their little mysterious moments, like the split second flashes of other programmes that appear during season 2. I remember one was a frog leaping into the air. This is one of those fun things too. Either that or I'm calling it as being Hemlock, Warlock's girlfriend
If you ever watch the making of The Young Ones Lisa Mayer says those we deliberately put in. I think the reason was so people look at each other and think 'did I just see that? Or make people think the BBC had made a mistake during editing

And can also be seen at the bottom of the stairs during the 'Boring' episode, where Neil pulls the skewer out of his head. This Fifth Housemate has fascinated me for years. Great video by the way!

But this is what I figured out. Each episode of the Young Ones had 3-4 writers. One writer collaborated on only 12 episodes and she co-wrote each of these episodes plus a couple others identified in another article I read. She also played the part of an extra on a couple episodes. Her name is Lise Mayer. I wonder if they had her put on a long wig and sit in the corner.

I think they just decided there was a spirit. And when they moved house in the second season, the spirit may have just lost track of them. Or, perhaps they figured the massive blast from Vyvyan's "baby" that destroyed the season one house released it and or rendered whatever it was that bound it to our plain nil. Apparently he did it all the time make the cast laugh.

And Mayall and Edmondson have stared in another show called The Comedy Strip, which starred Jennifer Saunders and Dawn French too.
