I think that in Colleen's case she had every right to sign the Playbill's first, particularly since she went out the stage door after every single show, and she signed every single playbill during that time. She has only so much time after the shows, so to focus on those who did see the show is not unreasonable. She stated that she would sign other items if she had time at the end, so I think that focusing on those who had seen the show was extremely generous.

I saw Sir Patrick Stewart doing a one-man A Christmas Carol on broadway and he would not sign anything star trek (even turning the playbill page to the page without the Picard pictures. I was a bit annoyed at the time. But now that she mentioned that celebrities like him and Colleen / Miranda usually charge for that sort of thing, it make more sense.

I was there for the Brendon Urie situation and it was ridiculous. I was respectful and waited till the final bow was done and saw people running out during the last song and the curtain call so they could get out there. By the time that I was out by the door there were people who said they had waited for 2 hours to see him. People were pushing and screaming and being really nasty for it. I think that being at the stage door if you didn't attend the show is fine but there should be respect for the cast of the show, the stars that have guest runs for the show, and the other fans who are there. It all boils down to respect.

it really makes me upset when people who haven’t seen the show go to the stagedoor anyway. people who did see the show want to have convos with the actors and compliment them on their performance. and those who didn’t are only there because of their desire to meet someone for free. i think that there should be a rule at stagedoor that you have to show your ticket to be at the stagedoor to make it less crowded and a lot safer for the actors.

I think it’s wrong to stage door a show you haven’t seen. Part of the stage door experience is to congratulate the performers for an amazing show, if you haven’t seen the show you have no right to do so since you didn’t see them.
Every time I stage door I ask every cast member, no matter who they played, to sign my program and take a photo with me if they want. I so appreciate ensemble members and swings and I want them to feel the same love as the “big stars”

I feel that for stagedoor they need to have some way of checking that all the people there have ticket stubs with them. This may not be necessary for all shows, but when shows have very popular celebrities that attract other audiences, this would be helpful.

    • @tomleonard830
      @tomleonard830 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

If you have a playbill, it's a decent proxy for figuring out who saw the show. While you could have seen the show and not taken a playbill, or gotten your hands on the playbill without seeing the show, most people who have a playbill saw the show.

  • @ShannonHuber
    @ShannonHuber 4 ปีที่แล้ว +28

One of the most hectic stage door experiences I've ever had was 'Equus' with Daniel Radcliffe and Richard Griffiths. Not only did you have to show your Playbill, but also your ticket for that exact performance (date + time) to be allowed in the stage door area--otherwise you could stand across the street in hopes for a glimpse of the Harry Potter stars. This was definitely effective because I imagine 90% of the audience would not have seen that show if it wasn't for the star power.
I've also been to stage doors where celebrities refuse to sign any memorabilia that isn't affiliated with the show they're in. So lets say you saw a show but couldn't stage door that performance, or someone did come out and you went back another time to get a completely signed Playbill--as long as it was for the same show, it's not really a big deal.
Twice I've stage door'ed a show I did not see: once was to meet up with a friend after a show. It was a very large crowd, but I also made sure I wasn't blocking anyone who actually saw the show from getting the signatures and pictures they wanted. The second time was to a show I had already seen, but was missing one signature for the completed Playbill. Again, I made sure I was not in the way of anyone who actually saw the show and made sure my presence and stage door "expertise" only enhanced everyone else's experience (e.g. help take pictures, make sure little kids are seen first, etc.).
There is definitely stage door etiquette, and for the most part we all abide by it. It's unfortunate that Colleen had the experience she did, and maybe the security there needed to crack down on rules and clearly state she would only sign Miranda Sings merch if they showed they had a Playbill and/or ticket from the show (I know it's not difficult to get a Playbill from a show you didn't see, but might be a good place to start if we're weeding out the people who stalk stage doors without seeing the show).

As someone who has stage door'ed at a bunch of Broadway shows and collects autographed window cards for the shows I've seen, I really think the experience should be limited to people who have actually purchased a ticket to the show. If others want to hang around maybe get pictures from a few feet back from the barrier, that's fine. But I bought the ticket, saw the show, stayed through to the end ... I should get a spot right up front. And no, there should be no autographing of other merch ... I saw Hugh Jackman in "The River" and there were people getting Wolverine merch and artwork autographed. He was absolutely gracious (of course!) but that night wasn't about Wolverine. Honor the work that his is doing at that point in time. Show-specific merch only please!!
I haven't thought through the logistics of this, but perhaps "stage dooring" should be held inside the theater after most of the house has emptied out. That would prevent the people who didn't actually buy a ticket to the show from taking up space.

Lowkey concerned that I contributed to the whole stagedooring when you haven't seen the show thing because of my video meeting Lin at Hamilton. I was told by a cast member that I had tickets to the show. So I went for NYC one night only just to see it and then head home. Literally megabus 8+ hours to get there. Then unfortunately our standing room only tickets were given last minute to another cast member's family out of priority. So we were left in NYC for one night with our plans out the window. The cast member told us to come to the stage door because of this, so we went without seeing the show. Lin saw my tweet and came out to meet us. I think there are circumstances like that, where its okay to stage door without seeing the show. It isn't always people showing up just because they want to meet someone for free or get merch signed. Sometimes wacky things happen and you end up there on a whim. But I always feel roasted when this conversation happens 😳 I feel like so many people have seen that video and are like "oh you can just show up and meet your fave!" Wasn't my intention when I made that video. Also sorry for this long comment haha

Love this video, can you bring back bedtime stories? Love you! With the stage door question you were asking, what they could do is just put a ticket check that leads into an area with the barricades that separate the actors fans and street. That would change it all because to get into the theater you need a ticket, so why not use it to get into the stage door area. That would also end people leaving before curtain call is over because they could then just be turned away, or out in the way back.

    • @e.r.8383
      @e.r.8383 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Sunset Nebula the reason it’s an issue is because Colleen is a celebrity way too many people were showing up and crowding the street and it wasn’t fair to people who paid to be there. She goes really in depth on her channel, but essentially there’s no way to find out who “deserves” to see her the most based on who is the biggest fan or whatever, so the only fair way to determine who can see her is who paid to have a ticket. It’s not fair to those who bought a ticket with stagedooring in mind to show up the earliest they can right after the show is over and there are a hundred people already there who haven’t paid anything. She’s always happy to meet people and take pictures in public or whenever she sees fans out and about, but this situation is about her playing a part that people came to see and paid for.

I saw kinky boots when Brendon Urie was in it and I remember being one of the first ones out the theater to try to get to the stage door only to find out it was already surrounded by people who obviously hadn’t seen the show. It was such a huge crowd that they were literally pouring out into the middle of the street. About a week later was when he announced he wouldn’t be going out the stage door anymore.

I flew out to see Waitress in August specifically, making my first trip to Broadway ever! My first show was Beetlejuice, and the S
stage door there was extremely chill, and fun. The Waitress door was intense. While I was very happy to see Allison Luff, Colleen Ballinger, etc. it was overwhelming. There was a man there who did not see the show, aggressively blocking people from coming to the gate so he could hold a place for his daughter. It just made me quickly uncomfortable, and I didn't really enjoy the experience. I personally don't think you should be allowed to hold a place, or stand at the front without having seen the show. From what I understand, it's hard to regulate because the street is public, so asking people to leave isn't okay? It just made me sad to have a beautiful theatre experience and come out to pushing and aggression. I suppose I could opt out of stage door experiences in the future, but let's hope the majority of people going are considerate of others.

I know this comment was 2 years ago but I saw cursed child in the first year that it was out and that stage door was an amazing first stage door experience. Everyone was so kind respectful and as I was leaving to go catch the train, Noma Dumezweni, who played Hermione came out and she never did, even though it was a packed stage door, someone at the front passed my playbills and book up for her to sign before their own stuff which was just amazing. But also I saw mean girls in October 2019 and everyone comes out really fast to that stage door, plus I had to say bye to my friends who were going to catch the train before the rain, and someone at the front of the door said, “quick run to the end, Gray Henson just came out you might be able to see him and I was at the end of the line and he stood and talked to me for 10 minutes, even though he had to go and get dinner before the next show, but in all stage door people can be really nice even if sometimes they can be terrible. Just from my experience matinee stage doors, especially weekdays, tend to be better than night stage doors even if you see less cast members.

Here's my take on stage dooring:
    1. I think if you've seen the show and you missed your chance for the stage door then you can stage door next time at the same show
    2. Overall I don't think it's that bad to stage door at a show you haven't seen but not for being disrespectful to the actors and to others. (did also like @GabrielleRose comment)
    3. Stage dooring should not go away and I don't think security should be amped up too much. I do like the idea of posting rules by the stage door/entrance.

I think it's fine to stage door if you didn't see the show if you really didn't have the money or it was sold out, as long as you're respectful and try and wait until the paying audience gets their playbills signed first. But cast members have limited time to stage door and have lives to lead so if someone who is a local just hangs around and hogs the actors time, that's entitled behavior to me.

I agree that being respectful is the most important thing to remember, stagedoors are meant to be an extra fun little experience for people who saw the show and want to have a quick chat and picture with their favorite performers. I think whether or not its okay to stagedoor a show you didn't see depends on the circumstances. For example, I was in New York last summer and saw a few shows including Dear Evan Hansen, I thought the entire cast was outstanding and the show was amazing, however at the stagedoor only 2 cast members came out, I of course appreciated it but was kind of bummed I didn't get to meet more. (I don't want that to sound selfish, I completely understand how actors don't always stagedoor and should not be expected to, I respect that). Anyways the next day I had a big gap in my schedule and the Music Box Theater wasn't far from the hotel, and thought "why not" so I went back to the DEH stagedoor with my playbill. It wasn't crazy and I waited until the crowd from that show emptied out to get a place in line. I got to see a lot more of the cast and talk to them about how amazing I thought their performance was and it's still one of my favorite stagedoor memories.
Basically I'd say people need to analyze the situation and be respectful, if you couldn't see the show for financial reasons or you saw it a few days ago but couldn't stay to stagedoor I guess generally it's fine. But always put the people who actually saw the performance first and most importantly don't overwhelm the actors. Because their safety is more important than their signature and we want to make sure stagedooring remains a pleasant and enjoyable event the actors want to do.

I honestly think it's fine to stage door a show you didn't see, only if you are being respectful. It is totally not okay in Colleen's case where people were shoving to get Miranda Sings merch signed. This is Colleen's broadway debut. She's excited to see people asking for signatures for something big (BROADWAY!) that she's currently part of. Not everyone can afford tickets and just want to see their idols and favorite Broadway stars so if you go to stage door a show you didn't see and you're respectful then it's fine! If you want to be rude and shove and create chaos then don't

Like Colleen herself said...it’s not a free meet and greet. The people who paid the money should be the ones congratulating the cast on an amazing performance. Tickets to Waitress were as low as $32. If you can’t afford $32 you probably shouldn’t be in NYC.

I loved this video!!! Best makeup tutorial ever! And...
*My thoughts about Stage dorks--- doors*
I have seen just ONE Broadway show and that was Be More Chill, on July. I don't know if that's how most stage doors work, but they had a nice little fence surrouding the actor's area, with security around that helped giving the Playbills to the actors. I met some wonderful people there, all theater nerds like me, and we got a really nice meet and greet, five of the members of the cast came outside, and we all got pics and autographs. Everyone was very c h i l l, so that was great, we had no troubles and overall both the audience and the cast seem really happy.
I feel like that kind of organization is what's lacking in some other stage doors, security guards are what I feel is the most important. Maybe as you said, having "Stage door rules" outside the theater would help. It would state the obvious, but it can help if the security has to take action, giving them the right to ask the person to leave the stage door.
Also, that same night my sister and I where talking about stage dooring shows you didn't assist to, and I think I personally wouldn't do it, since I feel the magic is on having contact with people you saw perform. What I think you could do, would be double-stage dooring the same show if you get the chance, because you might not get all the autographs on a single night.
Another case could be that, for example, you are performing on X musical on Broadway, let's say Phantom, and that same night I went to see Hamilton. When I get out of Hamilton, and if I couldn't buy tickets for Phantom in the time of your run, I could consider showing up at the door for the classic "oh im a big fan" thingy. Maybe a rule they could put on the theater would be "No autographs to outside people" or even "Autographs only on Playbills" for my last statement to apply, so that you could still have the interaction with the person you want to meet, but to asure it's just for non-profit puposes.

If I ever go to new York I would probably see Beetlejuice, and I really want to see Renee Rapp from Mean Girls and I can't afford to see both. So under certain circumstantces I think it is ok to go to a stage door of a show you didn't see it.
EDIT: I also would just want to say hi and how much I admire her and maybe take a picture depending if there are a lot of people there or if she has been out awhile

We recently went to NYC on a trip to see musicals specifically. We saw four musicals and an off-broadway play. The stage door experiences were all amazing and a huge high point of our trip. My daughter bought a poster at each show and had them signed by everyone that came out. The shows where more of the cast came out were particularly impactful.
    - Mean Girls (Taylor's last night... Tina Fey was there.. So many came out it was amazing and Taylor took pics with everyone)
    - The Play that Goes Wrong (Entire cast came out and they were blown away that we were there.. selfies, conversations, autographs, etc.)
    - Beetlejuice (No Alex, but we got to see many and it was a lot of fun)
    - Hadestown (Pretty much everyone but Hades came out. For the top ticket in town that was surprising.)
    - Dear Evan Hansen (Quite a few came out, signed autographs in the rain.)
I think it would be a bummer if some high profile situations with idiots ruined it for everyone else. Such a big part of the experience for some of us!

Lately, I’ve also been questioning whether or not broadway should still allow stage dooring and the other etHiCaL dilEmas surrounding it along with the purpose of it. I love stage dooring, I think it is an amazing opportunity to tell the performers thank you for putting on an amazing show and it is also an opportunity to show appreciation for their work. However, lately the fandom culture has started to change and stage dooring has begun to be driven by more selfish motives. Even I think about whether I’m being selfish or not by keeping the performers from going home or taking a break. There are other ways to say thank you and show appreciation (leave letters at the theater, message performers on social media, etc.), so should we just start resorting to those ways? I personally think stage dooring should stick around for just a little longer, but if broadway decided to stop to get rid of stage door, I would not be surprised nor _that_ upset.

I remember seeing the Waitress on Broadway when Colleen Ballinger was performing and honestly I have never in my many years of going to Broadway shows seen so many people waiting for her. There were at least 200-300 people. Also just a side note I was at the stage door because I collect signed posters for every Broadway show I see so I had to get my poster signed. Luckily I was in the front of the barricade so I got all the cast signatures but I was talking to the security guard while waiting. He told me that this was a light day and it can get worse. I remember the only actor that I got star struck was when I saw Spring Awakening with Marlee Matlin in it and it was not this bad. I even saw The Realistic Joneses with Michael C. Hall and it wasn't this bad. I got the full cast signature on the poster including Colleen's but it was crazy.

I think that going to the stagedoor when you didn’t see the show is a bit rude. I had heard a story about fans who didn’t see Hamilton going to the stagedoor and singing Hamilton songs (such as the song My Shot) during the song, “It’s Quiet Uptown” and it was very distracting for the actors. I’ve seen that most of the people who don’t go to see the show are usually the ones who are rude. Stagedooring should be for the people who saw the show and want to compliment the actors.

Re Stage door: I think that it’s okay to stage door a show you haven’t seen as long as you are respectful of the actors and the people who did see the show. But it’s always better to just get the ticket and see the show. Stage door is a special feature on a DVD, not the whole movie.
I agree though, Waitress could have used more ticket sales, but also Colleen and Todrick both said this run set sales records, and people were coming from around the world to see the show because she was there. So it’s a good and bad thing. My hope is that if they flew in “just to see Colleen and Todrick in Waitress”, that they saw other shows and supported Broadway on a larger scale.

On the stage door situation: As an avid and lifelong Broadway fan, stagedooring has always been one of my favorite theatre experiences. Personally, all of the ones I've been to in New York, San Francisco, and LA have been pretty civil, I've even made friends at some that I've attended. The craziest one I went to was for Finding Neverland when Matthew Morrison was still the lead since he had such a big audience from Glee. I've found that just waiting your turn and slowly working your way to the front of the crowd as it lessens is best. Especially since I've gotten older I think the most important thing is to let the younger kids up to the front. A) they're a lot tinier and you can almost always see/reach over them and b) letting them have that experience can be so meaningful and life changing for a kid who maybe has just seen their first show or has dreams of becoming an actor someday. I also think that having respect for the actors is really important. If they choose to come out, thats their choice and their time. No one should expect a full conversation, an autograph, a picture, or really anything. It's insanely overwhelming and can be super anxiety inducing, like Barrett Wilbert Weed has talked about. Actors are real people too, no matter how famous they are. Finally, as long as it isn't a mob scene, I think that going to a stage door for a show you havent attended is okay, as long as you don't expect an autograph or ruin the experience for other fans who have just seen the show. I also think that there should be more security and additional protocols at popular, high volume stage doors. If fans get too rowdy, are pushing and shoving, swearing, etc.. they should be removed. Stage doors are magical and inspirational and truly fantastic when everyone respects that they're all there for the same reason and no one feels entitled to attention from the actors. yikes this got long sorry y'all I just have a lot of feelings haha

If I was a fan of a show I’d like to be there even if I didn’t see the show but I understand how that puts a higher demand on performers esp. since fan culture can get so hyped up. I think the idea of rules would be very helpful.

I bought a ticket for the opening night. I drove from Denver to NYC on almost no sleep and arrived to NY less than one hour until curtain. Made it to the theatre in time and the show was incredible (I’m a huge fan of the show, not just Colleen). When the show ended and we got to the stage door, it was CHAOS. I’ve been to plenty of stage doors...but this was a whole different animal.
The entire NYC block was just flooded with people. Which honestly was lovely, since it was her Broadway debut. But from what I saw on social media, the crowds were like that every night she was in the show.
One, I felt bad for Alison Luff. I’m sure she didn’t really mind. She seems lovely. But her Jenna was EXTRAORDINARY. And it’s nuts in some ways to think of her being overshadowed by Colleen and Todrick. Please don’t get me wrong: Colleen and Todrick were WONDERFUL. But Alison Luff’s voice made my jaw DROP. And I saw nobody mobbing her. It was like the TH-cam celebrity culture that is so normal now wiped out performers with INCREDIBLE Broadway resumes. Which is just...odd...and uncomfortable...especially if that’s where our society is headed.
I 100% agree that if all of those people who showed up each and every night bought a ticket, maybe “Waitress” wouldn’t have to close. The show closing is devastating to me.
In the video I saw, Colleen says she signed every playbill and asked each person where they were from, etc. We were there over an hour...when she announced she had to wrap it up, my friend sort of pushed her way through a bunch of teenagers who were not moving and finally handed her our playbills. Basically no eye contact from Colleen...certainly no conversation or photos. She just looked down and signed.
And not that I blame Colleen. She did the best she could. The number of people was out of control. But what I heard her say online...what Todrick said...was not our experience after being there over an hour.
Lea Salonga is a theatre LEGEND and I was able to take a great photo with her after Les Miz on Broadway, and that stage door was quite busy. This experience, however was just a bit out of control now that I look back on it.
Grateful that I had the experience of seeing Colleen’s debut and seeing “Waitress” again before it closes. But looking forward to more...and this sounds ridiculous...but “dignified” stage door experiences in the future.

We, can do as much as we can but overall we don't have authority to remove those people from stagedoor etc. I have a few friends who live in NY who stagedoor all the time for different shows so they can meet people they aspire to be like etc. If done respectfully, stagedooring can be the best experience but I personally think the theaters need to bring out guidelines or rules to stop this stuff occurring.

I stage doored at Hamilton before the matinee. That felt better that getting in the way of people after a show and I knew I would never get a ticket. It was really small and calm and we mainly just said hi and let me go get ready for the show.

Stage dooring is tough. When I was in the city for the first time in June I had tickets to two shows (mean girls and the prom) and I also fully intended on stage dooring Hamilton. That was because I had gifts for some of the cast, and I really wanted to meet a few certain actors (Mandy Gonzalez and Joanna Jones in particular) they had both suggested I stage doored their Saturday matinee in order to give them these gifts and say hi, and they fully acknowledge that on an 18 year olds, saving for uni, self funded off babysitting trip, I couldn’t afford tickets to the show. I’ve been a fan of Mandy for well over two years now and we’d spoken in DMs and talked quite a bit and she knew who I was and also she kind of also wanted to finally meet me. I ended up not stage dooring that Saturday because I was actually invited onstage by Joanna to give the gifts for the 6 girls there (Mandy, Joanna, Denée, Johanna and passed on the gifts for Gabby and Lauren) Mandy then offered me tickets to the Sunday matinee (standing room, we payed the $40 each, but she got them booked for us) and so after seeing that I stage doored.
I’ve never stage doored a show I’ve not seen, although I did have the intention to, but that’s probably partly because I’m not travelling and hour into London to just stage door, and have to pay for a programme, and I didn’t have long in NY. For me it depends, i wouldn’t (and I think it’s wrong to stage door) for a show where I want to meet the actor for reason not linked to the show (like going because she’s Miranda sings) I would however stage door a show if I can’t afford tickets, and I’m a fan of the actor because of their broadway career and the shows they’ve been in, like hamilton. Also if it was mega crowded and I hadn’t seen the show, I’d allow those who had seen it in front of me and I’d wait at the end of the line.
    That my opinion on it.

I saw Waitress a few days before Colleen's debut, when she and Todrick hosted the karaoke (because I was in NYC for a couple of days only and it just worked out that way), so I still got the playbill signed by her without a huge crowd. I also happened to see them before the show entering the theater when it was just starting because I had some trouble with my ticket and the ticket people were trying to figure it out, but since I wasn't really expecting to see them I only blurted "hi" after they passed me. The stage door after the karaoke was pretty full but not as crazy as a few days after when she was actually in the show.

I am late -per usual- but I agree with you about people stage dooring without seeing the show. If they truly love the person in the show then they'd try and support them in whatever capacity. I love stage dooring (met Anthony Rapp during the LSOH tour in Dallas.) Maybe showing your ticket stub before being let in line. IDK. It's a dilemma.
