I make my own sketchbooks and always finish them. I usually have several going on at a time but that is because they have diferent papers, sizes and purposes. However, my current sketchbook is amde with several types of papers and diferent size pages. I am testing this method because last year I found myself wanting to journal in my sketchbook, but it was made from 100% cotton, 300 gsm Fabriano Artistico which felt a little precious. Now I have even creased brown wrapping paper inside.
I think sketchbooks are akin to the Silence in Doctor Who. We don't remember them when they are out of sight, so we buy more 😆 Or they could be from the same family as hangers, mateless socks, and Tupperware lids in that they have an ability to multiply. Thanks for a fun video! So happy to see you back this week ❤
Brilliant comment!! I am a Dr Who fan from Scotland. The Silence was one of the most disturbing series of episode. Well, that and The Weeping Angels *shudders...
An art proffesor explained toned paper to me like this: With watercolor we preserve our highlights as the white of the paper. With toned grey and tan the paper is your midtone. And with black paper we use opaque mediums and the paper is your shadow... That helped me alot wrap my head around what to do with different papers. Its also harder at first keep switching paper colors as you really do have to think a different way. Hope that helps you!
Seeing people paint and draw on toned paper is super inspiring, but whenever I have a toned paper sketchbook in my hands in an art supply store, I always decide to put it back. I'm really unsure about them and am not brave enough to give it a try. I feel your struggle, hahah
@@chromaphile You're star struck and I'm beyond flattered that you even recognise my name lol talk less of star status lool you are too kind! Your video was lovely! I look forward to watching more xx
Hey Jules, I missed you last Sunday! Glad to see you back. I empathize on the sketchbook problem. I have acquired too many that are beautiful - because they've not been started! 🤪
An idea for your toned paper is to save it for thumbnails. I didn't use to enjoy making thumbnails before painting but now I really love it because it helps work out my composition ideas for portraits and landscapes. It's fun to have these little comic strip size drawings to try out some ideas. But I have white paper in my thumbnail sketchbook so I have to shade in all my midtones with pencil like a peasant.
I am honestly jealous you have a sketchbook problem 🤣 i need to have a sketchbook problem again! Right now what I have is a planner problem and i feel like that's so far away from what I truly want to do as an artist. So thank you for sharing your sketchbook collection 🤩🤩🤩
Thanks so much!! I also wish I used my sketchbooks more these days but I've been using my digital sketchbook instead haha. I think I'm about to have a planner problem next year too...
I *think* you mentioned your source (digital?) for the medieval botanicals once before, but could you remind me? I do so love the weird and whimsical marginalia of illustrated/illuminated manuscripts ☺️
I love the oracle card ideas and drawings! Can't wait to see how that comes out! Thanks for sharing your art with us. I was very lucky in that I found my favorite type of sketchbook early on. I use the Bee Creative Watercolor Book, which comes in square format 8 x 8 or rectangular 8 x 5-1/2 or 11 x 8-1/2. They are wire bound, which isn't the most attractive, but they do lay flat. I saw a TH-camr (INCWorks)painting on one and loved the way it took watercolor. Not sure if you can buy them outside of the US but they are cheapest at DickBlick . Like you, I have several for different reasons, one for color mixing, one for sketches, etc. Having different types and sizes of books would cause me a lot of anxiety, but I'm very neurospicy. Great video! ♥
Haha don't be fooled, I'm also very neurospicy - I just oscillate between needing everything the same and craving something different and getting fomo. I also love Incworks!
My own sketchbook issue is entirely different. You, at least have started your many sketchbooks. I just counted my own UNSTARTED sketchbooks - I own 47. FOURTY SEVEN Jules. I had no idea things had become so bad. I am now at the stage of contemplating opening my door and selling half my supplies I know I bought on a whim and will never use. The more I think about it, the better I think the idea is… I won’t throw open my door obviously, but eBay or similar may be a good place to start. So many mediums, when watercolour is my first live, followed by soft pastels and pastel pencils. The rest? Oh, that’s simply the stuff I bought and is about to bankrupt me! 😳😂😂🤷♀️ I love the ideas you have for each of your unfinished sketchbooks. If you never pick a particular book up, it is perhaps because the subject chosen, no longer inspires? Sending consoling words from one addict to another from the delights of Scotland. Germany too is also very beautiful in the countryside. I remember you took a break in the country and walked in the forest trying to sort your head out. That feels a long time ago now, I do hope that break was helpful in the end. Rambling again - this is why commenting is such a bad idea from me! 🤐👍🏻
Do it! you can even just list things as a bulk lot on eBay, someone else will love them and then you'll have more space to use what you like and maybe to try some new things slowly... thanks for all your great comments, I love reading them!!
you are funny...those faces you make😂...ok...You made me feel a little...bit...better...as my supply of lined and unlined/H2O and painting journals...is HIGHER than yours...sort on!...where to store...

It's so true. When I'm in the art supply store, it may as well be as if I never saw a sketchbook before 😂

I also heard this and totally get it, I just don't really enjoy drawing that way thus far. Guess I'll just keep trying
Oof, this is too real. "Sketchbook problem" is definitely a mood.
It's a good problem to have but yeah, no more buying until at least some of these are used 😊
Haha!! We ALLLL have a sketchbook problem!
I thought I was different 😭😭

At least I started all mine 😂 and yeah sorry for disappearing, for some reason my motivation was super low. Just a little uninspired I think

Interesting, I'll try this out!!
These are all great ideas for sketchbooks, even if they aren't finished
They definitely all started with good intentions, indeed!
Obsessed with your sketchbook collection
thank you! Can't wait to finish them 😂
Love the idea of live sketching some of the tarot card progress!!
Maybe now I have a better setup at my desk I can try it and bare minimum I can just hang out with my friends while I do it lol

No sketch books is a problem. Having lots of them is a privilege 🙂 or at least that is what one can tell oneself when in denial 😅
It can be both 😁 but yes in the grand scheme of things, it's a great thing 🥰
Poor thing Jules, you were quivering as I you spoke!!!
It's just so traumatic having so many sketchbooks 😉
I think it becomes a problem only if you can't decide which sketchbook to use😅
Good perspective, I like that 😂
I have this problem too 😳😳😳😳😳😂💖
what's your favourite sketchbook, out of all of them?
Royal talens, stilman and birn, and seawhite are my favourites 🤗💖☺️
😂❤😂😂❤

Yes, I'm going to need a new bookshelf for them soon...
