8:55 "When Roman Szmal comes out with tubes, it might be over for me." RIGHT? I've been saying this for years. How marvelous to encounter another soul who understands this so perfectly.
I just found your channel, and I'm already loving what you do! ❤ I love mixing my own pans! I do that fairly often to make "knock off" mixes using pigments I already have. Examples: Ocean Blue by RS, Denise's Green by DV, Olive Green by DV, Sap Green by Qor, Naples Yellow by Schmincke, Lavender by DS, Jane's Grey by DS. I'm sure there's others, and I keep a running list of colors to try mixing like this. I'll also mix my own pans if I don't like one of the pigments in a convenience paint. For example, I love the color of Moonglow, but I don't want the lightfastness issues of PR177. So I mix my own using Viridian PG18, Ultramarine PB29, and Quin Alizarin Crimson PV19 by DV. And I might use different versions of ultramarine depending on my current preference for granulation. Another reason to mix my own pans... I often make my own convenience colours using pigments that are already on my palette. That way I get much better colour harmonies with the rest of the palette! One example of this is a bit of a weird mix: Phthalo Green PG7 with Benzimida Orange Deep PO36 by DV. It makes the most gorgeous, luminous, earthy greens! It's wonderful for autumn foliage as different ratios vary from orange, warm brown, olive green, to deep green. Other oranges will mix similarly; I like Transparent Pyrrol Orange for this too.
very creative and lovely mixes! I often mix my tube paints as well. I recently mixed ultramarine turquoise (PB29 and PG7) and a dark green inspired by Prussian green, since I had a full tube of unused Prussian Blue. It's a lot of fun to see what you can do with leftover paint. Better used than unused ^_^
Such a relaxing video and I love the color you ended up with. Do you have Aquarius Violet from Roman Szmal? It feels fairly similar to this but leans a little warmer and has very nice granulation. Roman Szmal paints are certainly addicting! I've been mixing some green gouache for my little travel palette lately because I find it's a lot harder to get the colors I want made in tubes since many brands have a fairly limited range. I also made a dupe for Cobalt Turquoise (PG50) as I was trying to keep toxic pigments out of the palette I'll be carrying around outdoors.
I do indeed have the Aquarius violet and it is beautiful but maybe even a little too separating for me! I think both these colours have a place for sure. I totally get not wanting to use cobalt/cadmium pigments outdoors, it's so nice to have the flexibility to mix your own!
These are some lovely colors😍 Thank you for sharing your recipes, I will definitely be using them. It is so hard to find a good chartreuse that isn’t too acid yellow or May green. Let’s do more of these!😘
@@chromaphileI get you, I dislike palette knives et. al. because not only it makes a horrible noise, but it ever gets all the paint removed and there is lots of waste. The solution? A small silicone spatula (or silicone nail care tool) will be able to scrape all the pigment from the porcelain without any inconvenience (and noise!) Your ceramic tray (the one that looks like a cutting board) should be perfect because there are no lips or vertical borders. I really like your colours! Happy experimenting!
The colours you‘ve mixed look beautiful! I can‘t mix colours as storage as I only use pans - actually mixing own colours would be a reason to start buying tubes as well 🤨🤪😊
I loooove both colors (Delft and P.Violet) and bought them years ago for mixing but the drying shift and the lack of interest put me off. Now I got the recipe -Jules, thank you so much ❤
I mixed my own version of the most of the "Lunar" paints from Daniel Smith and tried my hand at your interesting viridian-based green. Currently trying to mix Naples Yellow...
Fun!!! I love the green you made!! Also bit of a thought... is the room you're filming in north facing? The light is quite blue, perhaps try a south facing room...??
Could you go over the pigments/paint colors you used again for the first color? I didn't catch the name of the yellow you used with the ultramarine blue and perylene green. I loved the color!
I can’t watch TV or TH-cam while I’m sketching. I tend to look at my paper rather than the TV or TH-cam. I prefer to listening to science videos where I don’t have to concentrate on the visuals.
@@entropycop History of the Universe is my favourite. Kurgezagt is another as well as Astrum. There is also a lady astronomer at Oxford University who has a rather engaging channel, only I’m not that engaged with it 😄. I can’t remember the name of her channel, though. PBS eons has nice nature videos. There is also that podcast with that physicist 😂.
I have my favourite Schmincke mixing colours: nickel titanate yellow, nickel azo yellow, quin gold, transparent pyrrole orange, Bordeaux red, perylene violet, dioxazine violet (always in contention for being removed), indanthrone blue, ultramarine (new addition but a good one I think), phthalo turquoise, perylene green. Currently trialling viridian/phthalo mix and transparent brown too!

Those sound like beautiful colours, thank you for the lovely comment and so happy you found me!! 🥰
Oh I am here for Color lab Jules, how fun! And it's a great lesson in not being too precious with paint. You've mixed some beautiful colors!
Thank you so much!! It's an idea that's been brewing for ages, was nice to finally get around to it

Oooh your handmade colours are beautiful. Ive never really mixed my own this was interesting❤
So glad you like them 😁😁😁

I have more I've already made to share - I'll do a video on the collection 😁
That bergamot looks beautiful.
Mix with a palette knife on a white ceramic plate. It’s easier to make nuanced adjustments.
It is, I just don't like that I end up wasting paint that gets left on the plate and other tools when mixing such a small quantity

Green bergamot?! Never knew it came in such an uplifting hue 😁 Gorgeous fruit and mixture🍋.
They are green when they're less ripe!

I find that the schmincke versions don't suffer at all with a drying shift!
🥰🥰
Thanks Tuppy 😁😁

I did a Naples Yellow since filming this video!
@@chromaphileAnd…? What formulation did you settle on? Don’t like mine too rosy.
@@entropycop it was PY216, PY53 and the Rembrandt transparent white!
Thank you!
@@entropycop hopefully you can come up with something similar, I was definitely going for more of a "pale cream/lemon" than a pink shade
Fun!!! I love the green you made!!
Also bit of a thought... is the room you're filming in north facing? The light is quite blue, perhaps try a south facing room...??
I appreciate the feedback but unfortunately I only have one option for room to film in 😊
Call it dusty plum!
That is a good one!!

It's nickel titanate yellow, PY53! It is lovely isn't it!
@@chromaphile Thank you!! Yes, I love 💕 the granulation!
Beautiful color- have you ever experimented with granulation medium?
I haven't, but honestly I've seen some other people using it and not been really impressed... But maybe one day I'll pick some up!

Haha. I do this too but with history. ❤

You’re not a purple person!!!! Gasp 😱 lol what color person are you then??? I’m a yellow person 💛💛💛💛💛
I'd say I'm more of a blue/green person, but really I can't say I'm against any of them... I do love yellows, I need to collect some more of them!
