I actually fucking loved how they presented Demeter. You wonder why she is institutionalized. Is she coping with something? Dealing with grief? In the myth Demeter and Persephone Persephone is her daughter and she is kidnapped by Hades to be taken to the Underworld to be his wife. Demeter is so sad she lets everything die and the crops go to shit. I think the Myth, for this show's purposes, didn't happen, and it was just an allegory for the death of their child. I don't know if they ever mention the child's name, but I bet it was Persephone.

Thank you for posting this magnificent and delicate song. This piece of art truly reflects the majesty, grace and beauty of what a goddess such as Demeter incarnates. I can only but assume anyone who has already been looking for this song has been as moved as I was listening to it for the first time. Given the current context, we all need to rethink about the beauty of nature, symbols that have led human civilizations from ancient civilizations up to now. We need to define together and embrace what it means to be human and our place in the universe. Again, thank you and kudos to Andrew Lockington for creating this master piece.
I just watched this episode tonight and needed to see this epic scene again and didn't think would find it. Thank you for posting it, I am glad I am not alone. 2 classic actors giving us a riveting scene that packed so much emotion in merely a minute of time.
I'm sad about it, I couldn't help being sad for her because my grandmother lived something similar, the difference is that she had to fight alone with 7 children, how many goddesses will Odin still sacrifice?
The weather/creator god being married to Mother earth is Kind of the basic structure of all indo european religions. So Oden and Demeter have some history very far back. She was an avatar of not just his wife but his other half, the yang to his yin so to speak.
i know it is just a show but i actually felt like crying and ended up bowing my head in silence to honor the fallen goddess, she who is the light and life of mount olympus itself.
In the books, the American gods are just a shadow, a hungry replica struggling to survive in a land where the gods are destined to die. But on the other hand, the original gods live eternally in their lands. The real Demeter lives on Olympus, just as the real Odin tells shadow, Wotan is Odin but Odin is not wotan.
The only bad thing about this, is that the plot is useless. Demeter appears, Odin wants wealth, makes the effort (as the viewer) and ends up dying or so it goes. Hopefully season 4 is pure action and fewer useless arcs like Bilquis who in the book dies in the second appearance and here they paint him as a very interesting character and she doesn´t
@@gjok8785 it was a beautiful arc and showed Wednesday truly heartbroken and sad for the first time. The arc drove his character forth, so I think it's definitely not wasted :) it isn't an action show and that's what makes it so great in my opinion

Blythe Danner will never not be effortlessly graceful.
Perhaps the first time that he showed the sorrow and despair of losing a loved one.

I like how when she walks spring and life returns and the snow melts as if she is embracing her role as an Nature deity again.
What an utterly beautiful scene. Blythe Danner is such a wonderful actress, it's great, she has been part of american gods!

Thor got his own origin story in Nordic lore, so an Olympian cannot give birth to a Nordic Thor.

You know when this show fires on all cylinders it’s really quite moving. It’s a shame it’s so uneven.
I don't find it uneven at all. I want a show that encompasses every pace. I think it's wonderful. I would have liked more emotional scenes though.

She wants to mourn with him over their child's death long ago. She believes this will not happen so she frees herself and drifts away.

The rain on the window pane sheds the tears that Odin cannot.
She did not die, if you look closely, very briefly you see a crying woman who invokes her, going to the call of the woman who cries out for her help.
