    Don't give Tuppence if they swear a bit - first time I've seen a video of this route which is gone now. Still got my place in Folkestone despite being 10,000 miles away now.

      At a punt I'm going to say class 67. It is definitely an EMD 2 stroke, and the 57's at the time were in use with frieghtliner, great western and virgin. The driver also says its "a 125 mph machine." So a class 67.

    Great video mate, i have visited Folkestone Habour recently and took a walk along this abandoned Harbour station which is now open to the public for tourist attraction, the signal box by the station is now a coffee shop, i've read in Kent local paper recently that there are talk of the North of the line to be turn into a tram line as there now a summer market, i last visited Folkestone Harbour coming on the train from Folkestone East over 20 years ago, Shame the line had to close would be good for tourist now as they visit the Harbour Arms.

      Not surprising it closed really, with the very limited traffic once the Channel Tunnel opened. It was Network Rail’s most expensive mile of railway to maintain!

    Crappy overcast weather makes this vid seem overexposed. And despite the F bombs a most uninspiring journey, over a boring, messy, decaying line indeed.

  • @reggiesmith3866

    The third rail looks rusty..was it ever used? If the branch had been electrified much earlier than it was a couple of powerful 3rd rail electric locos might have been v successful with heavy trains and eliminated the need for all those tank engines... am I right or wrong?

    • @LewisCollard
      @LewisCollard 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was indeed used - it ran electric trains from 1962 until (presumably) the end of regular services in 2001, so that's about six years of surface rust on the third rail. As for the speculative part: Probably! The Southern Railway did have some success with third-rail locos hauling large freight loads (the CC1 and CC2).

    • @ianhosier4042
      @ianhosier4042 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not just the third rail that is rusty and look at the state of those bridges! If the train went any faster it would end up in the harbour!

  • @ianhosier4042
    @ianhosier4042 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Silly how there are so many tracks (at least 8) at that junction yet the train to the harbour and the passenger train which zips past at the start of the video get just a single track each. Guess it would derail if it went any faster and that bridge looks like it's ready to collapse. No investment and no redundancy so one little track fault and the whole network goes down which sounds about right for British rail!

    Maybe there would of been a spur that the former Folkestone Harbour branch line would of connected onto from Folkestone Central. Very sad to see the branch line now gone and there are remains of it today.

      @Jothetrainneeek ปีที่แล้ว +2

      the line was turned into a single track 2000 even though the you can see the other one and the trains used to come london Victoria and reverse into those sidings. when they reduced the amount of ferrys with the opening of the channel tunnel which eventually lead to closure of all ferry’s in 2000 the line shut in 2009 (officially 2014)however after the 2000 it was only gala devices or special trains that went down there however they still use the sidings in the first bit

    Interesting to find out what this locomotive type was. Doesn't sound like a Class 67 though I could be wrong. Also looks like the line hadn't been 'singled' yet when this was taken. Where does EBB on the signal relate to?

    • @hellotherekindsir1137
      @hellotherekindsir1137 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Flyfactors UK it sounds like a class 66 at 7:47

    • @angeltransportpjects
      @angeltransportpjects 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agree. Though the staple diet on VSOE operations is the Class 67 either heading or one located top and tail. 'Shed' must have been some sort of substitution for a 'Skip' shortage that day. Would most likely have adjoined at Folk East rather than been top and tailed down from London Vic. Thanks for that :o)

      They're not customer service employees, so I don't see a problem. Despite what some may think (you included by the looks) train drivers aren't some sort of chivalrous noble order. Go to any building site, machine or welding shop and you'll hear the same language or worse

    • @angeltransportpjects
      @angeltransportpjects 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I clearly see your point. However as a driver of nearly eight years I'd at least have the decency to curb my language if on film as after all I want to leave everyone with the best impression of myself as a person. After all I wouldn't know who is going to end up watching the footage ... Plus there is Karma of course! Imagine if my Mother ends up seeing me referring to that Tony Barry chap as 'King C**t' like much of the rest of Reading did ... I was not brought up like that!!! I think I'm looking for the word 'appropriate' somewhere in this but as you mention on a day to day basis people will act accordingly and with the culture of their organisation or job.
