Both of my grandpas were engineers on the Santa Fe RR in the 30's and 40's. As a child in the mid 50's and early 60's we'd ride a train every summer from Texas to Iowa. My mother was a saint as it was a two day trip with 5 kids. God Bless you Mom

Love this one, our old family stomping grounds. Great Uncle use to own the assayers office and generals store when the Silverton mines were in operation. Also use to rent mules....must have had interest in the mines as well, they were awful wealthy. Auntie would come down to shop in Denver for the latest fashions and fads...yep, even back then fashion was on their minds. The Forney museum in Denver was also a great railroad history treasure, so lucky to have gotten to see it. Enjoy your videos, thanks so much, bye from Idaho RVr.

I first took the Durango and Silverton train in about 1968 as a 14-year-old with my family. We Camped along the river, the Animas. Rode horses up in the mountains.
55 years later, I remember it like it was yesterday. In Sliverton, there was a gunfight put on as an act. It was awesome.

Great video as always Russ! I have the Durango & Silverton RR on my to do list. Nice footage of the engine pulling out onto the "turnaround" (turntable). Yes, it's a hot job in the summer but need to point out that engine no longer runs on coal, but as many have today, been converted to oil. It uses a blower with a nozzle to emit a fine spray of oil. The Fireman on this locomotive just monitors and adjusts fuel flow. Still a hot job nonetheless but at least those guys aren't covered in coal dust anymore. You commented on the high price for the tickets. It's a small railroad and they are not subsidized like Amtrak. They pay high prices for all their supplies, insurance, and federal operating permits. To me it's well worth the price to experience living history. Much better than running in and out of a static display museum!
Enjoyed reliving our trip to Durango, twice in 2011. We took the train in June and in October. It’s better seeing the fall colors. Take the train up to Silverton and the bus back to Durango. Many recommended that and it was truly a very enjoyable and memorable experience. Thanks for sharing the town, museum, train, and hot springs.
Thank you, Russ, for the wonderful video of Durango , Colorado. We took the ride to Silverton round trip May 31,1991. Was a fun experience in an outdoor car. Need to wear some kind of eye protection, due to the blowing cinders. Adult & kids over 12 tickets were $37.15 . Never got to go back. Hubby was a big fan of yours. Sadly, he passed away March 2021. He worked in Durango for a few months back in the 1970's . Enjoy your travels. I'm jealous.
Takes me back to the 50's watching the Steam Engines passing through town after a station stop.
Awe those were the days, everyday was an adventure as a kid. Not a care in the world.
I took that train ride several years ago. It was really a great experience. I was in the historic car and there was a lady on board who talked to us about the history there and told stories about several of the people who first lived in the area.
I will be on the train in July of 2024, to celebrate my 80th birthday. I first rode the Durango and Silverton in 1986. This time I plan on wearing an 1880s dress, and stay overnight at the Grand Imperial Hotel in Silverton, returning to Durango the next day. I can hardly wait!

My wife and I did this trip in Oct '17, rode in the caboose up to Silverton and back. Definitely a memorable experience, got some sleet while having lunch in Silverton.

I visited the museum in June 2018 when it was the only part of the railroad in operation. The line to Silverton was closed due to the 416 fire which was caused by a hot ember from one of the coal fired locomotives. These were subsequently converted to oil burners as a result. You can see the oil tanks on the locomotive tenders where the coal used to be located.
I had planned to head north to Silverton the next day en route to Grand Junction and Glenwood Springs but traffic was severely restricted on highway 550. I was advised to take state highway 145 north to eventually join 550. This was a very scenic route climbing through Lizard Head Pass. at 10,245' and a candidate for a future journey by yourself.
I am looking forward to your next video so I can see what I missed along 550 and in Silverton. Your trip to the hot springs has only served to whet my appetite.
Loved Durango! Great museum, but I didn’t ride the train. I drove the million dollar highway last October, all the way to Ouray. It’s my most watched video. It’s a fantastic drive.
I did that trip a few years ago. Made the right choice and took the bus back.
Those trains would come all the way to Farmington New Mexico when I was growing up in the 1950
I had the privilege of visiting Durango a few years back. My brother and I took a road trip from Denver. The RR museum was first class. We took the narrow gauge steam train to Silverton and then back to Durango. Saw Box Canyon falls in Ouray and the Black Canyon. Then on to Glenwood Springs for the hot springs.
The RV park you stayed in looked wonderful. The drive to Durango was also really scenic. The steam train and the museum look like a whole day trip on it's own. I loved everything in this video, and the hot springs were a great surprise, I wasn't expecting it. Looking forward to the next video. Safe travels.

The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad has a lot of equipment from the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad. My favorite steam locomotive here is Denver & Rio Grande Western 482 (A K-36 class narrow gauge 2-8-2 “Mikado” that was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1925, along with the rest of the surviving narrow gauge locomotives of the same class here). I have been here back in July 2016 and June 2022.
Growing up in Massachusetts we would take old time train rides at Edavile Rail Road through the cranberry boggs. Amazing memories and great food.

Was here in Durango in 2017,took the train to silverton .Fantastic day even tho it rained in Silverton, still wonderful trip.
I've taken that train at least 5 times from 1965 to early 2000's, round trip, one-way, and the off-season shorter run to the Cascade wye. Loved every minute of every trip! Also the whole San Juan Loop many times - Dolores, Telluride, Ouray, Silverton, Durango. The first time it wasn't even fully paved. SW Colorado is my favorite place on earth. I'd have lived there if I could handle the winters! You'll be back, Russ!
My daughter and I rode the train 3 or 4 years ago. The very first train ride of the year. It was pleasant, not hot yet. Took the train back also. We had a great time.

Great trip for tomorrow from Durango to Silverton. The road snakes it's way through the Mtns and goes over Red Mtn Pass at 11000 + ft. Million Dollar highway goes through the Mtns and goes over Red Mtn Pass at 11000 ft. The road is two lanes, no guard rails and has a steep embankment on one side. Drive Carefull.
Excellent video! You got some money shots there with the locomotive coming out of the roundhouse onto the turntable! Great timing! And the doubleheader steam locomotives pulling that long train to Silverton up the Animas River Canyon. Silverton is about to get swamped! Oh, and the 9 hours is if you take the train both ways (round trip) to Silverton and back. You lay over in Silverton for several hours for lunch, shopping, sightseeing, etc., before you return. It is a full day, though. If you take the bus up and the train back you have A/C part of the way!

I'm so glad you made this trip. I hadn't been to Durango since before smart phones and GPS. It's really pretty in the fall with the Aspen trees changing color. I noticed on that train leaving Durango that there were tables in the red car, so that must be the difference between the cars. Enjoy highway 550. It's a cool drive!
Thanks for the nice tour of the museum, turntable, and train yard. Have you eaten three meals in a restaurant, filled up your van with gasoline, or bought plane tickets or been to Disneyland or Sea-world lately Russ? Everything has gone sky high and a ride on the Durango & Silverton RR is still a great value comparatively. We are having an unseasonably hot dry summer throughout most of the west. Normally this time of year after the monsoons have begun, it’s usually cool in Durango. Most all of the steam locomotives have been converted from coal burners to fuel oil so the fireman no longer has to shovel seven tons of coal a day from Durango to Silverton and back. We visit Durango often. We’ve stayed a couple of times at an RV campground where the train goes through the park. And the trolley you passed stops on the park road so you have a designated driver back to the campground. It’s not cheap but Durango is not about cheap! I had no idea the railroad museum was free and that big! Thanks for sharing your travels and hard work!

I've wanted to ride that since I was young and for some reason - never made it that way. But I'll admit - me and hot choo-choo rides in the summer with huge crowds no longer agree. Did you folks notice how little the box cars were just before museum? The railroad is 36 inch gauge, (inside rail to rail),. Way smaller compared to regular size choo-choos. People from all over the world come to ride that one. In the heritage railroad world it's a rock star! Everything about it including the spectacular route it travels - unique, (from what I've read at least),. I'm envious of you Russ but I'm sitting out west in 60 deg coastal fog so,....not that envious. Watching it here, better for me at the moment. Cheers! 👍

Cool Museum and I love trains. My Dad used to take me down to the rail yards and the Round House where the trains were worked on. The Round turntable as was called when I was a kid didn't turn the trains as fast as what you showed in your video. I am impressed by the detail of the museum holdings. The diesel was nice but the steam was very cool. Remember these stream engines are more than 100 years old so keeping them in running condition must be quite an undertaking. So, I can understand the ticket price. Thanks Russ for the visit and hope to see the fall colors from train, if you get a chance.

Hey Russ, my wife & I rode the steam train from Durango to Silverton in 1989. Nine hours is the total trip, but you're not on the train that long. You have a long while in Silverton to eat & shop. We still have our pics of that trip. Part of the way up, the train stops on a bridge over the river to flush (guess that's the right word) the steam pipes. We were there in July & it wasn't hot in Durango (needed jackets after sun went down). We camped at Mesa Verde camp grounds outside Durango. We were told to take a light jacket on the train ride because of higher altitude in Silverton. They were right. A clerk in a store there said that if it reached 70 degrees they felt like they were having a heat stroke. We sure are enjoying this season's videos. Thanks for taking us along.
Liked the train so much I've ridden it twice up to Silverton but taking it back to Durango does make for a long day. The scenery though makes up for it. I've had some great meals over the years in Durango spending time with friends who live there. Looking forward to the 550 drive.

Love, loved this video. Trains were a big part of my early childhood. My granddad was an engineer for the B&O Railroad. My grandma had a lifetime Railroad pass. She would take me for train rides from stat to state. Later, when she came to visit us, she would arrive on a train.
Your timing on this one is perfect. Catching them back out of that shop and onto the turntable! That was awesome. I spent a lot of time up there but not that early. By now I'm sure you've already passed through the Ouray/Ridgeway area or I would've kept an eye out for you :-) Safe travels Russ

Rode this train both ways in 1980. Loved Colorado for its train history. Loved the shot of the engine turning around on the turn table. The narrow gage was 3 ft wide, could go around sharper turns.
Looks like a lot of changes in 43 years. Silverton is a nice town on the other end of the line.
Drove over 550 ,great view. Also visited the Colorado Train Museum .

I rode on the Durango & Silverton with the steam engine last summer. It was amazing! Even though it was late June, it was a cool day. I rode the train up and back, which was a long day, but views that I missed going up I was able to see going back to Durango. I do think if I did that trip again that I would opt to ride the train up and take the bus back. I didn't get to spend much time in downtown Durango, so I need to do that next time. Looking forward to your Million Dollar Highway video. It is a beautiful drive.
I stumbled on your channel. I liked how you're filming these trips. I feel like I'm sitting in the front seat seeing colorful Colorado. You stopped at small towns and learned their history. I really enjoy it. My daughter moved to Denver two years ago. Now that I have a place to stay and someone to drive me around, I will be spending a lot of time in Colorado. Coming from flat Florida and seeing the mountains out West for the first time, was truly magical. There is something about those mountains.

I'm from Colorado. I've been to Durango many times. I've done the train three times. It looks like they use oil instead of coal for the steam engines any more. I would go back in a heart beat. I love that area of the world.

The Durango to Silverton Railroad is the same RR that comes from Chama. The tracks are no longer contiguous. Route built to haul ore out of Silverton, the end of the line. I drove by that Hot Springs in 1983 and never knew it was there.
Great tour Russ. That museum in Durango was fabulous.I've never been down there. Silvertron is fun too and some museums there. You will be in the high country after Silverton all the way to Ouray. I hope you can stop at the Ute Indian Museum near Montrose. On the way east on 50 Black Canyon of the Gunnison is about 12 miles out of Montrose. There's a turn off on 50 east to 347. You will be free. It 's a national park. There are a lot of view points in that park for you to stop and check out and even a camp ground. I'll be watching this tour. Very close to where I live now but love to see it and your reaction to it.

That 20 miles from Bayfield to Durango is the longest 20 miles you will ever drive in mid-day and afternoon traffic. The only thing worse is driving from Pagosa Springs to Durango during same time of day.

Awesome video! My dad worked on the Railroad 44 years and I never got to see an engine at the Roundhouse turn around! I remember seeing the old round house which is gone now, but never got to see one turn around.
I looked up that engine 482. Interesting that they converted it oil!
On December 16, 2021, 482 was recently converted to burn oil instead of coal and is the fourth steam locomotive on the D&SNG to undergo conversion from coal-burning to oil-burning, the first three being class K-37 locomotive 493, class K-28 locomotive 473, and sister class K-36 locomotive 480.
Apparently they still use Coal to blow the whistle because I saw the steam coming out. 😮

One day you should go on the Georgetown loop railroad steam train. It is about two hour ride and you are able to get off the train and tour a silver mine.
