  • The uncultured pirates of Eorzea's southwest have a proud and noble heritage of slightly more cultured pirates. Let's dissect the history of Vylbrand!
    This video extensively contains my own commentary and editing and is intended for educational purposes.

    It always frustrates me your channel doesn't get more views/subscribers. Your content is simply so insightful both for ingame lore and that of the real world- why would my anyone miss on this knowledge...?
    Anyway- thank you Ethys for the content you put out, welcome back from the (palace of the) dead and keep up the great work.

    Wonderful video makes me very proud to be not just a Scholar and Summoner, not just a Maelstorm but a cat of the high seas. Till Sea Swallows All!

    I’m relatively new to FFXIV and something of a lore hound and by the twelve, I am so happy to have found your channel!

    Absolutely beautiful. I knew about The Wanderer's City and the tonberry plague a while ago but only recently began levelling scholar, currently Lv. 42, and been deeply interested in the lore concerning the Nymian scholars and the civilisations of old, Ampdapor and Mhach. I've also been levelling Blacksmith, Armourer and Marauder, so lots of recent pieces of dialogue all clicked in my head while watching your video. This came out at the perfect time for me.

    I realize it's a minor bit of history, but you still forgot to give a mention to the keepers of the code who kept pirates in check. The Upright Thieves, later reformed into the Rogues Guild.

    I've been meaning to watch this. An excellent summary as I've come to expect from you. I find it markedly bizarre that from our current knowledge of the Fifth Astral Era Nym comes across as being entirely innocent; victims, even. I can't help but think that there must be some dark Nymian secrets lost to the ages akin to at least that which we know of from the Amdapori. My thinking is likely due mostly to expectations in how fantasy narratives tend to play out, but Nym feels entirely too clean.

    as a proud Roegadyn, finally having this knowledge of my peoples history as well as the land before my people immigrated has hardened my appreciation for it.

    Thanks a ton for the video, Ethys. As a proud Limsan and member of the Maelstrom myself, I was fascinated to learn more about the city's history. Very well done.
    That being said, might I offer some simple criticism? There exists official prononciations for Eorzean languages. Specifically, Roegadyn (roo-ga-deen) has a unique phonology reminiscent of old German and you can find info on it in the forums which should help with name pronunciation and improve the quality of your narration. :)

    3:00 Hmm. So the Dunesfolk settled in Vylbrand, while the Plainsfolk landed on the southern coast of Vylbrand. Neat.

    What do you think of the newly revealed Scripture gear from a lore perspective? I think it may be casual Sharlayan wear.

    We already know that the Floating City of Nym didn't float until the recent Calamity activated latent aether in the stones.

    ...So the Nymians were lalafells... What were the other two counties? I thought the Mhachi were also potatoes but the corpses they've left around the place aren't.

    • @GammaCruxis
      @GammaCruxis 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This has been brought up before - as ALL of the Black Mage corpses are Hyur models, even in areas where Hyur shouldn't exist. He plans to bring this up during the lore panel at Fanfest.

    • @fredy2041
      @fredy2041 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So far all hints points that all or at leats the mayority of the population of Mhach were lalafelss. While on Amdapoar was Elezens.
      But appeantly this isue of the corpses is really making a conflict on lore. I really hope we get an answer too to this. But honestly i think that it is no more than just a way to save assets.

    You mentioned the Dunesfolk settled on Vylbrand then said the Plainsfolk settled on Vylbrand but I think you meant that the Dunesfolk settled on Aldenard.

      Yeah I meant to say that the Dunesfolk settled in Thanalan, guess I misspoke and didn't catch it in post D:

    The name Limsa Lominsa uses decidedly plainsfolk nomenclature rather than seawolven language. Is it possible that the name predates the arrival of the Galadion and salvaging of the Mizzenmast?

    limsa and the pirates has always been one of my favorite parts of FFXIV, to bad SE hasn't yet fully explored the seas...and that particular "new world" they speak of.

    Sad how Scholars had tragic ends in both FF11 and FF14 ... in FF11 they were also used in military strategy against the Shadow Lord...but when there was no longer use of them at the end of the war, like some Governments do with their agents. They were exterminated , hunted down like animals. in FF14 they get cursed by a Mhach "Trojan Horse" and later annihilated . :(

    • @alexdavid878
      @alexdavid878 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Didn't help that in XI the leader of the scholars was a psychopath who manipulated one of his students into doing a lot of dark experiments(killing a large number of their own ranks) of which he swooped in and took once any fruit came to bear. Though I am not 100% sure how that ended, never got around to doing the limit break quest.
      Wasn't he also possessed/bound to a demon?
