  • Ecuador by Train: South America’s Most Spectacular Railway Line | Free Documentary
Bolivia by Train: • Bolivia by Train: Thro...
Join us for an unforgettable journey as the train climbs to Urbina, Ecuador’s highest station at 3,609 meters or 11,840 ft. The route winds through the Avenue of Volcanoes, passing Cotopaxi National Park, before reaching Quito, the world’s highest capital.
The Trans-Andean railway navigates the infamous Devil’s Nose (Nariz del Diablo), a near-vertical mountain where the train zigzags up 500 meters in just 12 kilometers-a true feat of engineering! Originally completed in 1908, much of the railway was damaged in the 1990s but was restored in 2013, preserving its historic narrow-gauge tracks. Spanning 450 kilometers, it connects the coastal city of Guayaquil to the Andean highlands.
To ensure safe passage, motorcycle guards halt traffic at unguarded crossings. At the heart of Ecuador’s railway revival is the Tren Crucero, a luxurious steam train carrying up to 54 passengers. The most thrilling stretch begins in the Chanchán River gorge, where the train zigzags up Devil’s Nose on tight switchbacks, with tracks that seem to overlap.

The Trans-Andean railway navigates the notorious Devil's Nose, or Nariz del Diablo, a mountain with nearly vertical cliffs. To conquer this daunting terrain, the train zigzags, climbing 500 meters over just 12 kilometers. With sharp ascents and descents, it's not for the faint-hearted!
Come along with the reporters for an unforgettable adventure as the train climbs to Urbina, the highest station at 3,609 meters above sea level. The route then traverses the Avenue of Volcanoes, passing through Cotopaxi National Park, and continues to Quito, the world's highest capital.

Great film! I grew up in Ecuador where my Dad was the Chief Geologist at the Portovelo Gold Mine. We took a vacation in 1948 when I was 6 years old, and rode the train from Guayaquil (Duran) to Ambato, where we took a taxi to the hot springs at Banos. I can remember the trip up the slope (Nariz de Diablo) with the switchback like it was yesterday, with the very patient Baldwin steam engine simply having the power to overcome any slope presented. A wonderful memory! I seem to recall the same lady narrating a trip on the F deP into Potrerillos, Chile. Another train went there with a similar spectacular ride. Many thanks

Back in 1991 I traveled Northern Ecuador on a bus fitted with train wheels. What a blast that was!!! We got to climb on top until just before sunset. One of the greatest adventures of my life. Ibarra to San Lorenzo. I just looked it up and it still runs. Get on that! It's not a rich gringo cash cow but you'll come down from the hi Andes and enter the jungles. BTW: Sorry for the correction but La Paz Bolivia is the highest capital in the world seconded by Quito.

This is not South Americas most spectacular railroad. That honor goes to the FCCA, Ferrocaril Central Andino in Peru. Sadly not at this time without passenger service but I would not call a tourist train that only runs every fifteen days a service!
