They had split up and in now way massive at the time. I seen them at the glasgow barrowland 89or90 the one where joey broke a string as he was about to.do a fabulous solo lol. 17 or 18 years old immense. They where the darlings of the music press in thises days it was NME and Melody.maker music papers but as the left they were in no massive fanbase. That grew in time as they were a noisy 1 third melody 2 thirds noise, low then loud.. i liked that aspect as it reminded me of the velvet underground..
Story time. I was in Virgin megastores when I was about 19 looking for some new music and a guy who worked there sport in’ a pink Mohawk asked me if I was looking for something in particular. I asked him if he had any recommendations. He asked if I had heard of the pixies. I had but I had never heard any of there music before. Long story short I bought surfer Rosa and with a few exceptions I really didn’t like the album, I’d even say I hated it. So, a month or so passed and once again I’m in virgin looking through cd’s when Mohawk comes up to me “ how did you like the pixies?” I can’t remember what I said but he was disappointed. “You should listen to Doolittle. All their albums are different” he said.so, I left with a copy of Doolittle that was on sale for £5 thinking that I wouldn’t like but at least I would have a better opinion by listening to two albums . I put it on and listened. I listened all the way to the end. And when it stopped, I kissed the album cover, caught the bus back to town and bought everything they had done. They are my favourite. More than zep, more than the Beatles. I know his post is a bit self serving but I love this band. Pure magic!
I come back to watch this video at least once a month. That last chorus just blows my mind. So much raw power. Such a great band and such a brilliant song
OMG just saw Pixies support PJam couple of days ago and have listened to this song 50 times since… how did I miss this raw gem for last 30yrs its like finding a gem in the dust that is todays music.
When Smells Like Teen Spirit hit - I was like - "This is amazing, I need more music like that". There was nothing like it around. Then someone played me this song...
I was there. I always kick myself for refusing to see an unknown band, Nirvana, at Rock City in Nottingham, a few weeks earlier. My mates went on about that gig for years afterwards. But a group of us bought tickets to the Pixies the day before, when we realised they hadn't sold out. Best gig ever and now my 18 year old daughter loves them and was blown sideways when I showed her my ticket, stuffed into the cover of Doolittle.
I love that the camera caught the crowd for the explosion of the third verse. There’s nothing like the energy at a show when a band like pixies is in their prime and breaking the walls.

Ha! That is bad call on a historic level. Noel Gallagher did the same. He had tickets to see Nirvana and didn't go.
