What’s the Difference in USB 3.1 Gen 1, Gen 2 and USB 3.2? - DIY in 5 Ep 132

  • There is a variety of USB types, it is so confusing! We’ll demystify the naming process so that you know exactly what you are getting and whether or not it fits your specific needs.
USB (Universal Serial Bus) is an industry standard that determines specifications for cables and connectors used for short-distance digital communications, connections and power supply. The USB Implementers Forum oversees the naming and maintaining these standards since USB 3.0 was released in 2008. So if you think the USB naming conventions are a bit confusing they to blame.
At the beginning USB 1.0 was released in January 1996, although not widely adopted until the release of USB 1.1 in 1998. Two years later, USB 2.0 was released, bringing with it not only higher bandwidth but also specifications for mini connectors, micro USB connectors and battery charging. USB 3.0 was released in 2008 and it was a vast improvement over 2.0’s transfer speeds of 480 Mbit/s. 3.0 introduced a SuperSpeed transfer mode, shown with a distinct logo and blue inserts in ports. Ah, these were the good old days when you could clearly see the difference between different USB options. But alas, this simplicity doesn’t last long.
USB 3.0 eventually became known as USB 3.1 Gen 1 - yep, they are the same thing. Then USB 3.1 Gen 2 came out, bringing speeds double what we had in Gen 1 - 10Gbit/s as opposed to 5Gbit/s respectively. Originally, the naming conventions Superspeed USB for Gen 1 and Superspeed USB+ for Gen 2 were pushed, but never really caught on, and some manufacturers even added the speeds 5Gbps or 10Gbps to their specs to help make it clearer. But most of the industry stuck with USB 3.1 Gen 1 and USB 3.1 Gen 2.
Then, in 2017, we got USB 3.2 and saw the gradual move from USB-A to USB-C connectors. USB-C supports higher transfer speeds and faster charging, and as such is becoming the new standard. Because of this, we see USB 3.2 in four different variations. USB 3.2 Gen 1x1 - offering the same speeds as USB 3.1 Gen 1, and therefore the same as USB 3.0. USB 3.2 Gen 1x2 offering 10Gbit/s transfer speed in USB-C form factor only. USB 3.2 Gen 2x1 - 10Gbit/s speeds in the standard USB-A form factor (just like USB 3.1 Gen 2). And USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 - 20Gbit/s transfer speeds, USB-C only.
It’s confusing but let’s continue. Thunderbolt is the brand name for Intel and Apple hardware connecting peripherals to a computer, and while the first two generations used a mini display port connector, the latest version Thunderbolt 3 uses a USB-C connector. It is precisely this combination of USB-C Thunderbolt technology which will take us into USB4. USB4 promises increased bandwidth, 40Gbit/s transfer speeds, Thunderbolt compatibility, USB-C connections and, with any luck, intense minimizing of USB user confusion.
The good news is almost all this is backwards compatible and again, hopefully will be more streamlined as we move into the era of USB 4. Do you have any specific USB-related questions not answered in this video? Please go ahead and leave them in the comments and we’ll do our best to answer them.

This was always the dumbest naming scheme I've ever heard, lol...It's easy, just keep going up in numbers, 3.0, 3.1, 3.2, 3.3, 3.4. They just like confusing people, clearly.

Shopping on Amazon, about 50% of devices that run USB (not including cables) support USB 2.0, 30% support 3.0 and 3.1 Gen 1x1, 10% support 3.1 Gen 2x1 and 3.2 Gen 2x1, 5% support Thunderbolt 3, 3% support 3.2 Gen 2x2, and 2% support USB4/TB4.
However, try to look up anything that delivers 10gbps and all you'll get is USB Type-A 3.0 and 3.1 Gen 1x1.
Sellers have had to start combining the letters with the numbers to avoid confusion (e.g. Thunderbolt3, USBC, Gen2, Gen2x2, TB3, etc.), so I'm glad USB40 is not only going to have that by default, but it also doesn't need the decimal point so that we don't get results for USB4.0 when USB4.2 comes out (because Amazon has no clue what punctuation is).

@@loop5720 Yep, I ended up with an "extra" M.2 PCIe drive, so I decided to use it as a 512GB USB drive....buy a little enclosure.
      Oh the choices....
Settled on USB 3.2x2, which is 20 GB/s, and you can plug it into USB A(@USB 3.2x1 OR Thunderbolt 3 ports, which are USB-C connectors and get the 20 GB/s rate.
You can also get one that runs full Thunderbolt 3, which is 40GB/s, but they are about $200!!!
      Mine was $35.99!!!
      40GB/s can wait at $200!

what the heck does "by 1" or "by 2" mean in USB 3.1 gen 1x2?
How the heck can a generation have a "by"?
Explain what that even means -_-, don't just start saying it like it's obvious.
here is a better job done:
      www.cnet.com/how-to/usb-3-2-explained-making-sense-of-current-and-confusing-usb-standard/
"We now find ourselves in a similar spot with USB 3.2. The newest, fastest version of USB 3.2 offers a max speed of 20Gbps and is called USB 3.2 Gen 2x2. (The 2x2 means it's the second generation and has two 10Gbps lanes to achieve its maximum throughput of 20Gbps.) The older USB 3.1 has a single 10Gbps channel and is called USB 3.2 Gen 2. Then there's USB 3.0, which is now called USB 3.2 Gen 1."

Thanks for your video on USB naming conventions and their comparison. I think perhaps what is needed though is a followup on SD or USB drives that are actually fast enough to work on these faster ports. What really surprised me that even 3.0 USB or USB 3.1 Gen1 as it is known now has some vastly different transfer rates among drive products. In some cases you may not even get 3.1 Gen1 max transfer rates. So it seems that the spped of the memory used in that product ultimately determines how fast that device will be. I have been contemplating buying a 3.2 Gen 2+2 adapter card but first I need to know what drives I now have to buy to realize these faster speeds. I would appreciate if you can research this and perhaps guide us in making those choices.

It's a shame nobody ever mentions the great grand father of both USB and Firewire. It was the great Nintendo Gameboy connect cable that started it all, allowing for ad-hoc 1-1 or for up to 4 devices using a little hub. Nowadays, Thunderbolt 4 and USB 4 are aiming to become fully cross compatible and after USB4 is out, I wouldn't be surprised to see small driver updates for existing Thunderbolt 4 devices to become fully usb4 compliant. They already are USB3.2 Gen2 (and backwards) compliant.

Question: USB 3.0 HUB 4 ports. If I have three USB 3.0 devices plugged in and one USB 2 device, does the whole hub run at USB 2 speeds?

    • @tinyphreak
      @tinyphreak 2 ปีที่แล้ว

The cable that connects the hub to the computer determine the capability of the hub, and from there the connectors going into the hub determines the actual speeds for those individual connections.
In short: As long as you use a 3.0 cable between the hub and the computer, the other devices will transfer data at their intended USB speeds, separately.

If you are having issues on your system you may want to verify that your System and System Drivers are updated to the manufacturer's recommendation. You can also check to see if the peripherals you are connecting to your laptop with the issue malfunction on a separate system. We suggest you contact the computer manufacturer's Tech Support for further troubleshooting.

(My external hard drive has a usb 3.0 ( think it’s just 3.0) & if I get a new MacBook Air, will have a usb 3.1 gen 2 . Hence the question (I’m sure there are ways to sort it all out , even if I needed to get someone else to organise it. And I am going to be buying a new external hard drive now as a backup. )

Hey Paige This is a thoughtful query. The ports and the majority of the more recent Gen USBs are backwards compatible. You can always check with the manufacturer to see if there are any limitations, but you should be able to plug in the USB 3.0 without any issues. I hate when the transfer speed goes to one or two mega bytes per second for NO reason even on USB 3 port. Huge files are ok, transfer can go up to 150 mega bytes per second; but when you have thousands of small files... just give up.

    • @kingston
      @kingston  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Gunther Arnold,
When transferring a folder with multiple files, we recommend compressing it first and transferring it as one big ZIP file.
Transferring a folder with multiple files over USB can slow the file transfer speed due to more metadata overhead, fragmentation, and heavier disk usage. A single compressed file can be faster as it reduces the transfer amount of data.

      Hello,
There are different varieties of type C usb ports, so check the specs on the system to confirm that port is a full type C and and manage 2 monitors. Our Nucleum will not manage two video signals, as the HDMI is the only one that supports video.
      Thank you

Ok, and if I name my son, Usain Thunderbolt Gen2, will he run double speed like Usain Bolt, you know, Gen1?
Thanks for this important video. It seems you have to do one about USB and Thunderbolt norms very frequently as this changes at lightning speeds nowadays...
Back in the day they designed a shovel. And it's design remaind through centuries up to this day. O well.
They should make one only thing once and for all. Basically using USB-A format and only develop that cause it's not as flimsy as USB-C. For most use cases USB-A Gen2 will do I think. But that's just me. If course on phones you'll need something like USB-C. But they should provide a round 2-pole charging socket on phones instead of wearing out the flimsy USB-C ones.

I still don't know what i'll get if i check Kingston’s web site.
USB 3.2 Gen 1x1 vs USB 3.2 Gen 1x2 - on your web site is only USB 3.2 Gen 1
So what will I get? If I cross check if USB-A or USB-C connection I can guess what it will be…
Make it easier for all and only write the theoretical read and write speed - and keep USB 3 for all
    Crazy marketing.
