Thanks for the reminder we all need Hygge in our lives...and for pen people, that means creating an environment of comfort and enjoyment of the simple pleasures of owning and writing with pens you have a relationship with, not just something you grab to write something with, and the quiet joy you experience writing with it. In those Hygge moments you journal and take time for yourself, to reflect on your emotional life, what you're really feeling, your current situation and your past. It is truly a luxury no matter which pen or pens you delight in.

I did not realize that I was practicing Hygge, but it was reassuring to learn that I am--and we share a Hygge pen in the Esterbrook JUNIOR Pumpkin Latte. 😉 Even though my husband has no idea why anyone would need as many pens as I have, he will often suggest when he can see that I am out of sorts, "Why don't you go into your knitting room and write with your pretty pens?" He's right, it's often just what I need.

Wonderful video Hemingway. It captures not only the essence of enjoying a fountain pen or new ink, but the inherent hygge of writing. On a side note, your comment, "Lamy Safari looks like a block of Lego," was great. I will never look at my Lamy pens the same again. LOL.

Great video, I’ve been practicing Hygge for a couple of years now. It’s calming effects are astounding. My choices are 1) sport brass or bronze 2) Pilot E95S 3) TWSBI Eco with a 1.1 stub 4) Pelikan 200 which I purchased this week along with a Parker 51 new gen, Penlux Masterpiece Delgado and a Pineider Avatar. Took a fantastic road-trip to Pen Boutique.

Oh it’s so easy to Hygge during the Holidays. Beautiful music and dancing holiday lights, a hot cup of coffee and the peace of mind of having time off and loved-ones near. Sometimes over the course of a day I will use a different pen every time I sit down. And… as you say… luxuriate. It’s wonderful!

Ahhh, this was wonderful!!!!! I definitely have Hygge pens! My first Pilot Vanishing point is always the one i grab when snuggled in our reading chair or if I am having a long writing session. My other is a Franklin-Christoph model 65 - it has a #5 steel nib with a SIG grind by Audrey Matteson. I can write for ages and no matter how fast I am writing, the SIG nib gives my cursive a little extra something.

Hello HJ. Another fine video. I have a similar technique and it's all about being mindful within each moment. I stop and enjoy each passing moment. What really convinced me about this practice was to do it while you are eating. Don't get caught up in the conversation alone. Savour each bite and discover the nuances of the different flavors and spices. Just a simple mindset when you do anything and everything. Good job. Great subject.

I find I just naturally practice Hygge more in the cooler times of year ... and in the summer I miss being able to enjoy it as much. Except that my room I converted into a library has elements that draw us in and invite letter writing, reading and journaling so .... I'm always looking for ways to enjoy the vibe of hygge even in hot weather. My friends who prefer summer must also want to infuse winter with certain colors and elements that evoke summer. ❤😂 Lamy Safaris are great too because of all the colors they come in and easy nib swap! Such an enjoyable video and topic thank you Hemingway!

I love sitting our garden, which is actually more of a nature reserve as we let it do its thing. There is a bench under the cabin overhang in a cool corner with a rose bush: that is where I sit and write. Sometimes I just spend time sitting and listening to the bees and watching the butterflies flit around. When we had cats they would often come and join me and we'd all chill together. Bliss!

It is so funny i see this today, life has been changing for me due to health issues to the point where i am now entering early retirement. I am figuring within my limitations how to still make life full and rich and my life long love of fountain pens and journal and poetry writing is I am realising a gentle way to allow my life to still feel full. I have a new old pen on the way, should be here today, a 1980´s Waterman le Man 100 Opera with extra fine nib. Apparently the nibs on these homages to Watermans first fountain pens are very soft and have a feel of the vintage flexi nibs, I can´t wait to try it.
I have been deciding which of my inks I will use in it and have decided on the Pelikan Edelstein Topaz which is a beautiful light but rich shade of blue with wonderful shading properties and good saturation.
I have been giving a spring clean to my writing desk so that I am ready to enjoy my first writing with it.
in doing all of this my mind wanders away from the pain (I have osteoarthritis in my spine) and on to more gentle loving things, it also helps keep as Winston Churchill used to call it, the black dog which has been a lifelong companion for me).
Thank you for this thoughtful video.

@@HemingwayJones The video was lovely. I must thank you for challenging my perception of hygge. I would never have thought that buying myself a pen as being hyggeligt, because in my life hygge is a we not a me. It’s about equality, harmony, and shelter as well as comfort, gratitude, togetherness, intimacy, and cozy lighting. Pleasure is also important in hygge, but I’ve never viewed it as my personal pleasure. Mmmm chocolate. The purchases benefit everyone. An example would be the ingredients to make æbleskiver for advent, and the making them as a group project is hygge. I don’t want to deny that writing with my fountain pen is a moment of hygge (hyygestund), because they are, just that I am challenged by the idea of buying a pen as being hyggeligt. But why not, if it is to become a soothing item that nourishes your soul and brings you pleasure? How different is it than stocking up on candles and cozy socks so everyone has warm feet this Autumn? May your weekend be hyggehjørnet (to be in the mood for hygge). Cheers!
Ps. My best friend who is Dutch and lives in the Netherlands tells me when the weather becomes warm than things are gezelligheid not hygge, because we are experiencing life outside our home. Hygge for the cold months and gezelligheid for the outgoing dimension of the warmer months. Gezelligheid is a lot like hygge for the Dutch. I think hygge is year around, but thought I share her opinion. :)

I was very pleased to see the M200 in the end. I also own that grey swirl model because it is an old pen my father gave to me. He aquired it about 30 years ago, the gold plating on the nib has come off mostly but it still writes like a dream. Excellent choice!

Hemmingway, what a wonderful video. I think we could all use some slowing down and comfort now. I've had issues with highlighters smearing fountain pen inks, but found a solution. I have a Kaweco sketch up with a highlighter crayan refill and am keeping it in a One Star leather small pen sleeve that is aging well. It fills out my analog kit when taking notes or diving into a book that I need to annotate. Great show as always.

This video is great for at least two reasons. Firstly, it has made me realise, after years of the comfort of smart working, that I need to reclaim my domestic space and stop associating it with work and how to do it. Secondly, as I delve deeper into the subject, I now know that there is a specific term for the way I deal with my nieces and nephews: Hyggeonkel. Thanks for a fun and thought-provoking video. Having thought about it, my choices surprised me. For a "comfort" pen that feels good and is a joy to write with, I'd go with my late 1940s Parker NS Duofold in chocolate brown with a free-flowing double broad nib. For an elegant indulgence of a pen, I really do like my Sheaffer Imperial Sovereign diamond cut, a pen I thought was too glitzy for me, but it has a warmth and a free flowing inlaid nib that's captivating. For a worry free pen that's light, comfortable, and writes well, it's hard to beat a Parker 45. I have a few, but my early 1960s "Arrow" with a slightly flexy broad gold nib is elegant, with an unfussy practicality. Thanks for providing a fun lens for me to spend a few minutes looking at my collection through.

There is a movie, “The Professor and the Madman” which includes a story about the beginnings of the “Oxford English Dictionary.” In a sub plot a man teaches a woman to read and write. There is a scene where a piece of paper contains writing by each of them. The difference in the blackness of the inks is stunning. Would like to have some ink like the blacker. I would suspect, though, that for the film it was written in India ink. *sigh* The film on the whole or in parts might qualify for a Dark Academia rating!

Hi Hemingway. I am a new follower. I am really enjoying your videos. Love your discussion on being pretentious. I am new at this hobby. I am frustrated though. My first pens were metropolitans. I love them. But I wanted to try shimmering and shading inks. I purchased a conklin with Omni flex stub. The shading inks didn’t shade. Even when filled with Iroshizuku ink, the writing experience is so much inferior to the smooth writing metropolitan. I then tried a Lamy with a medium nib. After a while, it became a smooth writer, but I still didn’t see shading in ink. I tried Sailor 123, and 224. They look sort of grey. I am enjoying swatching and watching videos. Any ideas on my journey with fountains pens? I would love to hear from your members as well. Thanks again to all of you for being so interesting and enjoyable. Celinda Levy

Hello Celinda! Welcome! So happy to have you with us. I am so glad that you are seeking out answers to these questions. Curiosity drives this hobby for me. Shummering, shading, sheen are some of the most fun aspects of ink. I find that they emerge in Medium and wider nibs better. The Stub should be brilliant. I am now wondering what it is that you are writing on? On some Tomoe River, Clairefontaine, or Rhodia paper it should emerge brilliantly. Lesser quality, not so much. This may help. @@HemingwayJones have to agree with the paper especially 😊 I noticed a HUGE difference when I switched to Rhodia pads and the like, even with my mediums ❤ I was using high gsm journals prior and those just sucked up the ink far too fast to see any real shading.

For me when I think of Hygge I think of winter and earthtones and darker jewel tones. So that would mean my Pelikan M400 brown Tortoiseshell, and my M600 red striated with a stub nib by Richard Binder. My Waterman Carène in Marine Amber. And my new Leonardo MZG in Rubino celluloid, and my Pelikan M1000 with a rebinde in Conway Stewart Red Stardust. I would probably also try my Leonardo MZ x Pen Chalet in Brooks Golden Rule which hasn’t gotten much love yet. And my Pilot e95s in burgundy. How can I not have a Pilot in the mix?! And any of my Aurora Optimas.

Hey HJ, bit of a random question here but I've always wondered; what are some good starting Hemingway works to start on? Anything in particular to look for? I've been wanting to start reading again and looking for inspiration of where to start. Thanks!

Hi Joe! I take any question. So, if you like a longer story with some good action “For Whom The Bell Tolls” is great. The Nick Adams stories are good for shorter pieces. “A Moveable Feast” is a great book about Paris in the 1920s. “The Old Man and the Sea” is lyrical and a quick read. It depends what you are into at the moment.

Watching dark wet ink being laid down... black. Dark chocolate brown. The more saturated the better.

Danish hygge, German gemutlichkeit (missing the umlaut). Can’t think of anything in English. What is the French? Satie, of course, at least the Gymnopedies.

@@HemingwayJones As a young musician with the Utah symphony back in the 60s we recorded a two disc set of all the orchestral works of Eric Satie. It was my first introduction. I remember it as being unusual and magic to my young aesthetic.

Wow! I adored Satie. I love how seemingly simple it is, yet -to my ears- slightly off time, slight wistful as the resolution trails the beat. I love Gnossiene (so?) as well. All 3 Gymnopedie. Wonderful that you can play it.

The E. Pumpkin Latte is gorgeous. A pity I already have so many gorgeous pens. 🫢 ...Still, doesn't hurt to look around to see if there is any available... Just look, mind you... 😏
I also see your points with the Pelikan M200 and Safari. It's very enjoyable to use a M200, even if it's a bit small for me, it's still lovely.
For most of it I'm unsure what I would choose. But I'll shock you with one: A Noodler Ahab with a self modified Noodler nib. It's light and super comfortable. In many ways I really love that pen, but it's also finicky. In particular it's not sealed well enough to be useful as a 'lying around working pen', so that's a pity. It's also so wet that the paper is a careful choice. It's more a project pen for me. I set it up and use it for one particular thing, event. Then I'd probably also want my L.E. Medici. Again, I really like that pen. After that, I don't know.

Believe it or not, I have never used a Noodler’s Arab! They are from Mass too. I need to. Thanks for the tips on it.

    • @Vermiliontea

@@HemingwayJones Lol. It's not really a tip. 😝 I love Noodler's pens. Some of them, like the acrylic Konrad and acrylic Neponset, are even almost practical. But I would never "recommend" it. And if you ask around, that's pretty much the picture: Some people who love them and other people who are utterly dumbfounded.
The thing is you have to set up the pen yourself. It's definitely a "tinkerer's pen". The feed and nib are friction set, and there is a good deal of adjustment available. And you can file or cut open closed channels on the feed to make it wetter if you so desire or have a nib for that. But hey, take it real careful with that. Blue fingers guaranteed and choose working surface carefully. The Ahab is definitely my favorite Noodler. I think I have 5 of them, or is it 6? But they are not the same, because they all have different nibs. Two of them have Goulet nibs, one has a non-flex Noodler fine, there is a standard Noodler very hard flex, and then a couple of my own custom nibs, including an extremely soft flex nib.
The material they're made of (the non-acrylics) is very comfortable and pleasant. But the starting procedure is to completely disassemble the pen and put the parts in strong washing up water for a few hours, then lay out the parts in the sun (UV) for an hour. That's to get rid of the smell. Then you have to set up the nib and feed so that the pen writes. 😉 Don't bother with "heat-setting" it. It's almost never necessary, and the risk for damage to the feed is quite high.
As having to be my own pen mechanic doesn't bother me, my main gripe with the Ahab is that it's not as well sealed as I want my working pens. It has a tendency to dry out. A problem compounded by the colossal volume of ink it holds. If I could fix that in some way...
The pens I would tip you, I have both previously mentioned, and they are cheap: Faber Castell 'Grip' and Wing Sung 699 (the vac model). Faber Castell's pens are not pretty. There is a stark, minimalistic, Teutonic production efficiency about their look. But their function is sensational. Very well sealed. They are very 'perfect' pens, with nibs that have to be experienced. Actually the best I have is the 'Loom', but it's a more expensive pen and I haven't seen it available lately. The 'Grip' has a smaller nib but it's still impressive.
