  • Hygge is a Danish term defined as “a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being.” In the past year, this concept of Scandinavian coziness has made inroads with an international audience. At least six books about hygge were published in the United States this year, with more to come in 2017. Author of the international best-seller The Little Book of Hygge, Meik Wiking takes VICE News on a hygge tour of Copenhagen coffee shops, library gardens and wine bars that epitomize the lifestyle trend.

    As a Danish/American dual citizen, I can tell you all definitively that "hygge" is real. There is no BS here. There is no propaganda. Visit Denmark and you'll experience an incredibly warm and happy culture. In sharp contrast to the US, the Danish government works hard to better the lives of its citizens. Most people in this comment section are very ignorant and too angry about the state of the US to understand that there are great places and cultures beyond US shores.

    People in Denmark and Scandinavia overall aren't disproportionately happy because of "Hygge" or cultural reasons, but rather because of the material conditions in their countries.
    As the Danish man pointed out in the video, they have social democratic polices that provide social programs and safety nets for people. Workers have health care, quality public education, and more.
    In the US, millions upon millions of people are living paycheck-to-paycheck, worried about how they are going to pay their rent and provide for their children.
    You can practice Hygge all you want, but if you're in poverty and have no social support, you aren't going to be happy.

      Ben Norton Well said! Thank you! He said: "Additional income does not make you happier..." The reality is: very most of the times now in the US, the "extra" is not "additional income", but sustenance.

      I Doubt that. They have very high social trust. This cannot be granted by government, but instead takes a homogenous population with specific cultural norms.

    • @Greutskol
      @Greutskol 7 ปีที่แล้ว +59

      no the danes dont have a homogenous population with specific cultural norms. they have free health care, free education and dont have to work three jobs to support their family tho. they are the most happy people in the world (or was last year) and its not bc "homogenous" or whatever, at least I THINK. because denmark has immigrants just like almost every european country, and they are not at the same level of happiness. dont think it has anything to do with heritage tbh. swedes are more nationalistic too, their police let nazis walk free on their streets and such. the social trust in denmark i would say is bc of the so called "social net" but with that means that the government got your back and you can stay home and not be homeless if you suffer an accident/illness/pregnancy or whatever reason you cant work, and you can go to school without putting yourself in debt for your entire life (not even swedes can do that lol)

    • @DaniDogenigt

      One of the reasons for danes' happiness is due to a strong safety net which garantees you won't end up in the streets or dying of an minor health issue just because you loose your job. It's the consistency of income, not the amplitude of income that matters for happiness.

    The other week, I got so frustrated by the hustle and bustle and stress and I remembered a friend mentioning the word hygge. So in desperation I bought a book on it. It really made my blood pressure go down reading it and I felt so relaxed. Our culture really needs to learn to unwind more. Perfectionism is toxic. There is something so beautiful in the minimalistic pursuit.

      You'll usually see that implementation of government offering various services when a population is stable, society is homogenous (people typically share the same values/ideals), and economic activity is stable (not an exponentially growing economy or a fluctuating economy).

    Hygge kan also be healthy. Hygge is a cup of tea. A dinner with good friends. You can still have a hygge time even if there are no candles involved. It's a fluid thing. The way Claus Meyer describes it is the most correct. Everybody does it. We (Danes) just have a name for it.

    "...many people find that moment and they call it something else. It's a moment of groundedness when you're close to other people. And when you listen to your heart and see people with your heart."
    I've had those moments. It's kind of when everything feels in harmony and you feel good and wholly present in that moment, talking with a friend or family member, likely laughing or sharing something good. I strive to make those moments. Moments of joy or just contentedness. And I believe he's right, you can make it happen no matter where you are in the world. It's just naming it that's so powerful and I love the Danes have a word for it.

    I was raised in a family like this. I live in America and I grew up in a family where dinner was so sacred that we always ate together, no phones, no computers etc. im so grateful for being able to have that experience every night. I find that my family is much closer than a lot of my friends whose families almost never eat together. In addition to that my parents are much happier than most of my friends parents, and they say that cooking and eating together everyday helps them feel grounded and stay connected even when their lives are so busy and hectic. I would really recommend this to anyone, it 100% results in a closer, more stable, and supportive family.

    Over the last 5 years I've fallen in love with Scandinavian design. It's simple, natural, thoughtful. Adopting the minimal design has many benefits. Organization for one. Less stress cutting out searching for items. Appreciating what we have. Less clutter in our home, less clutter in our minds. Family oriented spaces, to be mindful of our time spent together, the food we eat, the games we play. This is the first I've heard the term Hygge.

    • @larsandtheworld
      @larsandtheworld 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I feel like Gezellig (Eng.: Cosy) doesn't quite cut it based on the way Hygge is described in the video. It sounds more like they're describing a Bourgondic/Gourmandic way of life (Nl: Bourgondische/Gourmandische levensstijl). This is a way of life typical for the low countries, perhaps even more so in Belgium than in The Netherlands and France (I know, I know, the last isn't technically part of the low countries). This being because Belgium has a traditional Catholic culture with confession as a way of redemption during life, whereas the other two countries are more protestant/calvinistic in their historical culture, where there is no redemption through confession, but an ultimate judgement at the beginning of the afterlife. You could also state that these two countries are more social than the Belgium, more specifically the Flemish region. So I feel like the Dutch nuance of gezellig may be more complete in that case.
      Overall, I think gezellig is fitting here due to the whole wooly, wintery theme expressed in the video, and it's still a very fitting word to translate Hygge with in general.

      C Steven Diez The Americans always have this need to bash other countries when they don't follow the same politics as they do, even if the fact that those countries are doing much better than them is right on their face. They need to feel the world revolves around them, that they know better than anybody, that they are the best country, they would rather live in denial and follow propaganda even if they know it is propaganda, than create an informed opinion by themselves by either listening to people from other countries or visiting those countries. The Americans that talk about a muslim armagedon in Europe, are isolated in their Fox news world, that the world is going to shit and they are the only ones who will survive because they will build a wall and have guns.

    Damn...
    Its not that difficult.
    "Hygge" is just a slow paced good time. That is all.
    Watching the sea with or without someone. Watching a movie while eating snacks... With or without someone. Its just having a good relaxing time.
    Pretty sure all cultures have the same thing... Us Danes just have a single universal word for such a situation.
    Making a book about it or calling it a lifestyle is putting waaay too much into it ;)

  • @blackbird5634
    @blackbird5634 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    As an alcoholic I've tried 'Hygge' living and it's ok as long as you don't run out of liquor. But there is that moment when your friends and family come into your 'Hygge' and tell you it's time for a shower and maybe even rehab.
    "Hygge" is also good for heroin addicts and then there's that moment when your friends and family come into your 'Hygge' and tell you it's time for a shower and maybe even rehab.
    It helps to be really rich in your 'Hygge' so you don't have to go outside and you can smoke lots of weed that's been delivered. But there is that moment when your friends and family come into your 'Hygge' and tell you it's time for a shower and maybe even rehab.

    One major thing Vice did not elaborate that much on is that every Dane knows that if shit hits the fan, there is a big safety net that will catch you if things goes wrong in your life... A well spend, sustainable and transparent tax systems with no corruption where the weak (incl drug addicts and criminals) in society gets help to get back on track is what the US can learn from Scandinavia. This along side free education, will benefit all in the long run. This safety net along side a good work/life balance gives people the possibility and room for things like hygge...

    Biggest reason for being at the top consistently. Free healthcare as in 100% that means if you feel sick or get injured you don't stress about the bill that in some cases in the US hit hundreds of thousands or even millions just for one person. Next one is right to a home, if you are "homeless" you can get shelter instantly, there are rules that say "anyone has a right to a roof over their head" and not only that, they also give you money to live for and help find work if you don't have work.
    School is free, you can apply for any college and it won't cost a penny, if you are over 18 you even get paid monthly just for going to school, and if you live alone you will get even more.
    All the things people worry about in life, we don't. We choose to remove as many worries as possible, as said money only helps to a point, many millionaires have taken their own life.

      In Denmark we can say "det her er hyggeligt" which might be translated to "this is cozy (the closest word to hygge)". It's like an atmosphere.
      I don't get the trend. It's just a Danish word for a certain nice, lovely and warm atmosphere. As I said, cozy is almost the same.

In which case I doubt that you would disagree that Finnish people are notoriously cold. You may have some internal satisfaction but that doesnt mean you will ....smile. I think Philipinos are the happiest people I have ever met, I have met many and I havent met one who was not upbeat and optimistic but their economic situation would never reflect it.

      oh please... you're not finnish so you have no idea.. i am from here i know. People here are really happy. Looking at stereotypes that we are alcoholic and thinking its true is idiotic, when i see that we are fifth i can absolutely believe it. Majority of people in finland don't have real problems, we live very relaxed life. I can not say about philippines as i am not a filipino, same way you shouldn't analyze finns as you're not one... ok?

    • @robinzansen2191
      @robinzansen2191 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      also it's a difference in culture... me personally i dont smile when i am out in the public but i am very smily when i am with my family and friends, and a lot of inns are the same way.. dont critize when you dont know

    • @coolocelot
      @coolocelot 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The 'happiest country' thing is all cultural comparison, so its people comparing and analyzing societies they are not a part of, if people should not do that then the whole conversation is irrelevant. I was not making criticisms, only observations from my life. I also didn't mention alcoholism (although I did see a lot of it when I was living in Finland, I just didnt think it mattered in the conversation) so I do not know why you brought it up. But I do not think there is any problem comparing characteristics of different cultures. People can have opinions about whatever they want. But I will repeat that I thought the study had been about happiness in demeanor, like atittude and personaility which had influenced my original opinion. Dont take it as criticism, I did not mean to insult you, it was pretty much just a random thought, not an attack on your culture.

    What the US needs is a change of culture when it comes to social closeness.
    The first problem lies in agreeing on that everybody deserves a good time, together.
    One of the popular things these days is labeling yourself different from oneanother.
    Janteloven is the dark shadow that will cover everything unless you light up a cozy candle and gather around it.
    Pursue common good feelings rather than the itchy differences that set us apart.

Then again I do agree there is something to the way this word is in many both small and big ways an essential part of the Danish mentality. Furthermore seeing Vice spreading the word on Denmark's succes as a social-democratic nation akin to what The US would very likely become (or at least move towards) under Bernie Sanders is highly agreeable! In any aspect in life when you are new to something, you will not fit in easily among those who have been doing the given "thing" all their life. Ofc. there will be trouble. Where I live there are many "foreigners" from Sri Lanka. And I must say I have allways been impressed with how well their 1 and 2. generation "whole danes" fit in. How they live at home is their business. In public environment they dont stand out at all.

    However, me as a dane, would define hygge as a word for all the unexplainable nice things you experience in your everyday life. Whenever you need a word for something nice, you can use hygge. When that being said, I don't think that we have monopoly on hygge, we just got a word for it.

You know i think that if we just call everyone terrorists that we don't agree with that will solve all of our problems. We should just pit the unhappy masses against all the other countries that wont do business with the subsidiary corporations that own media outlets. We do have a small minority of radical muslims who doesn't want to educate themselves and tries to force their own crazy ideals onto other Muslims, but the state can take away their benefits if they find out about it. Almost all people live together peacefully and if you break the law the serious offenders will be sent to their home country again. If you contribute to the danish society no one bats an eye and we all pretty much live in peace. Let me know if there is more you want to know.

      That is true. Us Danes tend to more strict with our immigrants and punish the people if they did anything wrong. I agree that Sweden is in a much worse state than Denmark regarding the immigrants, but i think it is because they have accepted so many immigrants that i got out of control.

      in the Danish political spectrum, would Bernie Sanders be considered a Centrist/Moderate Right wing or a Social Democrat?
      I volunteered for his campaign and supported him in every way I could during the Presidential Primaries, but since I live in Texas (an extremely Republican/Conservative/Right wing state), many people here (especially small towns) were still skeptical about him being "far left". In my opinion, his views were an almost perfect blend of Capitalism and Socialism like y'all have in Scandinavia! :)

    So their history is literally a snickers commercial; all war and fighting until they start eating chocolate.
