People in Denmark and Scandinavia overall aren't disproportionately happy because of "Hygge" or cultural reasons, but rather because of the material conditions in their countries.
As the Danish man pointed out in the video, they have social democratic polices that provide social programs and safety nets for people. Workers have health care, quality public education, and more.
In the US, millions upon millions of people are living paycheck-to-paycheck, worried about how they are going to pay their rent and provide for their children.
You can practice Hygge all you want, but if you're in poverty and have no social support, you aren't going to be happy.

Ben Norton Well said! Thank you! He said: "Additional income does not make you happier..." The reality is: very most of the times now in the US, the "extra" is not "additional income", but sustenance.

I Doubt that. They have very high social trust. This cannot be granted by government, but instead takes a homogenous population with specific cultural norms.

    • @Greutskol
      @Greutskol 7 ปีที่แล้ว +60

no the danes dont have a homogenous population with specific cultural norms. they have free health care, free education and dont have to work three jobs to support their family tho. they are the most happy people in the world (or was last year) and its not bc "homogenous" or whatever, at least I THINK. because denmark has immigrants just like almost every european country, and they are not at the same level of happiness. dont think it has anything to do with heritage tbh. swedes are more nationalistic too, their police let nazis walk free on their streets and such. the social trust in denmark i would say is bc of the so called "social net" but with that means that the government got your back and you can stay home and not be homeless if you suffer an accident/illness/pregnancy or whatever reason you cant work, and you can go to school without putting yourself in debt for your entire life (not even swedes can do that lol)

As a Danish/American dual citizen, I can tell you all definitively that "hygge" is real. There is no BS here. There is no propaganda. Visit Denmark and you'll experience an incredibly warm and happy culture. In sharp contrast to the US, the Danish government works hard to better the lives of its citizens. Most people in this comment section are very ignorant and too angry about the state of the US to understand that there are great places and cultures beyond US shores.

One of the reasons for danes' happiness is due to a strong safety net which garantees you won't end up in the streets or dying of an minor health issue just because you loose your job. It's the consistency of income, not the amplitude of income that matters for happiness.

    • @grail68

The other week, I got so frustrated by the hustle and bustle and stress and I remembered a friend mentioning the word hygge. So in desperation I bought a book on it. It really made my blood pressure go down reading it and I felt so relaxed. Our culture really needs to learn to unwind more. Perfectionism is toxic. There is something so beautiful in the minimalistic pursuit.

  • @PLxFTW

This is interesting. I imagine people would be overall happier if there day-to-day worries didn't include basic survival like having enough to eat, the ability to afford healthcare, not having to worry about how much an education will cost, etc.

PLxFTW That's difficult to achieve in any country with a huge population, or a nation that gets an influx of illegal immigrants that usually contribute nothing to a country in regards to wages or educational attainment.
You'll usually see that implementation of government offering various services when a population is stable, society is homogenous (people typically share the same values/ideals), and economic activity is stable (not an exponentially growing economy or a fluctuating economy).

The cringe level is high in these comments. One huge difference between Americans and Danes is that many Americans believe wealth and the continued accumulation of wealth is a sign of good character. You'll often hear these idiots defending Donny Tinyhands by saying things like, "he's a billionaire with a supermodel wife so he is better than you."

Well if you look into the politics of it, Americans aren't accustomed to socialism, and since the government here doesn't give you as much free stuff as they do in Scandinavia, wealth is valued. Socialism would never work here anyways, you just can't do it with a country that a) has capitalism ingrained into their politics for hundreds of years, and b) has a population over 100 million.

"...many people find that moment and they call it something else. It's a moment of groundedness when you're close to other people. And when you listen to your heart and see people with your heart."
I've had those moments. It's kind of when everything feels in harmony and you feel good and wholly present in that moment, talking with a friend or family member, likely laughing or sharing something good. I strive to make those moments. Moments of joy or just contentedness. And I believe he's right, you can make it happen no matter where you are in the world. It's just naming it that's so powerful and I love the Danes have a word for it.

Hygge kan also be healthy. Hygge is a cup of tea. A dinner with good friends. You can still have a hygge time even if there are no candles involved. It's a fluid thing. The way Claus Meyer describes it is the most correct. Everybody does it. We (Danes) just have a name for it.

You can hygge alone!😃😎

I was raised in a family like this. I live in America and I grew up in a family where dinner was so sacred that we always ate together, no phones, no computers etc. im so grateful for being able to have that experience every night. I find that my family is much closer than a lot of my friends whose families almost never eat together. In addition to that my parents are much happier than most of my friends parents, and they say that cooking and eating together everyday helps them feel grounded and stay connected even when their lives are so busy and hectic. I would really recommend this to anyone, it 100% results in a closer, more stable, and supportive family.

  • @GeekTherapyRadio

The U.S. has severe issues and differences no one ever mentions when they say "something the U.S. can learn from Denmark, Norway, etc." Not to mention vast differences in both population size, diversity, and immigration issues.
To use simple imagery, if Denmark and the U.S. were boats, the U.S. would be a round, rudderless vessel, taking on water, being rowed by 1,000 different people in 1,000 different directions. When approaching a boulder, only a few people would see it and no one would hear them yelling about it.
Denmark would be a canoe of 5 people who look similar, think similarly, act similarly ("similar" ...not act "exactly alike"). All 5 would see the boulder and go around it.
It is as naive to think that Bernie Sanders would have righted the ship as it is to think Trump will get his wall. It is also just as dangerous to put your faith in one person. "Bernie/Trump will fix it." It's nonsense.
The actual take-away from Hygge is to worry about your friends, your family, and yourself. To treat yourself and those around you with a cozy kindness and respect. THAT is a great model to follow. THAT kind of mentality transforms nations better than any politician can or ever will.
So the question isn't "what can the U.S. learn from the Danish" it's "what can we learn from treating ourselves and others with respect."

Over the last 5 years I've fallen in love with Scandinavian design. It's simple, natural, thoughtful. Adopting the minimal design has many benefits. Organization for one. Less stress cutting out searching for items. Appreciating what we have. Less clutter in our home, less clutter in our minds. Family oriented spaces, to be mindful of our time spent together, the food we eat, the games we play. This is the first I've heard the term Hygge.

Tom Siekman Yeah not to be overly biased but Germanic words and languages have a tendency to describe social norms, decency, warmth, togetherness etc very well.. It's something I've noticed with Scandinavian languages (hygge/hygglighet, lagom, fika) and German (gemütlichkeit, gesellschaft).

I experienced Gezellig while in Amsterdam. While I know that Amsterdam isn't the "true" Netherlands to most, as it is a very international city, I still felt very comfortable there.

    • @larsandtheworld
      @larsandtheworld 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I feel like Gezellig (Eng.: Cosy) doesn't quite cut it based on the way Hygge is described in the video. It sounds more like they're describing a Bourgondic/Gourmandic way of life (Nl: Bourgondische/Gourmandische levensstijl). This is a way of life typical for the low countries, perhaps even more so in Belgium than in The Netherlands and France (I know, I know, the last isn't technically part of the low countries). This being because Belgium has a traditional Catholic culture with confession as a way of redemption during life, whereas the other two countries are more protestant/calvinistic in their historical culture, where there is no redemption through confession, but an ultimate judgement at the beginning of the afterlife. You could also state that these two countries are more social than the Belgium, more specifically the Flemish region. So I feel like the Dutch nuance of gezellig may be more complete in that case.
Overall, I think gezellig is fitting here due to the whole wooly, wintery theme expressed in the video, and it's still a very fitting word to translate Hygge with in general.

However, me as a dane, would define hygge as a word for all the unexplainable nice things you experience in your everyday life. Whenever you need a word for something nice, you can use hygge. When that being said, I don't think that we have monopoly on hygge, we just got a word for it.

They need to feel the world revolves around them, that they know better than anybody, that they are the best country, they would rather live in denial and follow propaganda even if they know it is propaganda, than create an informed opinion by themselves by either listening to people from other countries or visiting those countries. The Americans that talk about a muslim armagedon in Europe, are isolated in their Fox news world, that the world is going to shit and they are the only ones who will survive because they will build a wall and have guns.

I think (as a Canadian) if you have to explain Hygge to someone then you don't get it. We have Hygge in Canada too. I guess we just don't have a name for it. We plan for winter. All those things you want to do, but you don't have time for. Knitting, playing that video game you've been looking forward to. Gluttonous baking. It's just the art of surviving winter by looking forward to the things only winter can offer. Plus I think Hygge means just being comfortable with not doing anything/moving forward. A lovely term that doesn't really even need explaining, especially to people that go through hard winters.

As an alcoholic I've tried 'Hygge' living and it's ok as long as you don't run out of liquor. But there is that moment when your friends and family come into your 'Hygge' and tell you it's time for a shower and maybe even rehab.
"Hygge" is also good for heroin addicts and then there's that moment when your friends and family come into your 'Hygge' and tell you it's time for a shower and maybe even rehab.
It helps to be really rich in your 'Hygge' so you don't have to go outside and you can smoke lots of weed that's been delivered. But there is that moment when your friends and family come into your 'Hygge' and tell you it's time for a shower and maybe even rehab.

Working people who don't longer have to worry about losing everything if they get sick, and people who didn't have the same life oportunities, that now have a chance to study and have a better quality of life because of their efforts. The 'happiest country' thing is all cultural comparison, so its people comparing and analyzing societies they are not a part of, if people should not do that then the whole conversation is irrelevant. I was not making criticisms, only observations from my life. I also didn't mention alcoholism (although I did see a lot of it when I was living in Finland, I just didnt think it mattered in the conversation) so I do not know why you brought it up. But I do not think there is any problem comparing characteristics of different cultures. People can have opinions about whatever they want. But I will repeat that I thought the study had been about happiness in demeanor, like atittude and personaility which had influenced my original opinion. Dont take it as criticism, I did not mean to insult you, it was pretty much just a random thought, not an attack on your culture.

Watched this video and had no idea what Hygge was. I'm even more confused at the end of the video.

In Denmark we can say "det her er hyggeligt" which might be translated to "this is cozy (the closest word to hygge)". It's like an atmosphere.
I don't get the trend. It's just a Danish word for a certain nice, lovely and warm atmosphere. As I said, cozy is almost the same.
The meaning very much depends on the person saying it.

Basically think of that sort of homey, cozy, winterish vibe. That's the gist.

The first cafe they are eating at isn't hygge. However, one thing they didn't mention was music. When you places in Denmark, they are always playing the right music for the right place at the right volume.

Agree! If I were a registered Democrat, I would be so angry with the DNC for rigging their primaries 2016 to go with Hilary on the ballet & against Bernie

I love this way of living, I enjoy being at my bed with my two cats in winter, eating something sweet and watching good programs. I do not think eating a fair quantity of sugar will damage your health. You can go for a walk, drink a lot water and stop drinking a lot of alcohol. But sadly, I have to say that this kind of phylosophy is easier to be practised in countries which are more developed, where you do not have to worry about delinquency or rude people. Keep the levels of cortisol low is the most important thing for our health 🐾🐾

Are anti-depressants also a major (yet unspoken) part of hygge? Are the subjects of those happiness surveys honest?

I can see why Hygge makes Danes happy, because they are more focused on valueing relationships and intimacy with their families, friends and fellow humans. 😊
