I’ve got two 1981 Ibanez AS100’s, which are similar to the AS200. I bought the first one in October 1981, when I was 17. It was the only guitar I played for years and years. It’s amazingly comfortable and the balance is perfect. If I could only have one guitar, this is the one.

I have an 1982 Ibanez AS 200. This is the best sounding guitar I ever had, but the binding on it is in terrible condition. I hope the new Ibanez AS 2000 will sound well too.

  • @JohnJohn-fz6nt
    @JohnJohn-fz6nt 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

I never understood why they left the coil split tri-switch off of Sco's JSM100, since his AS-200 had one. The AS-2000 is actually the modern replica of the AS-200. A while back I wrote Ibanez about the differences and they replied:
"The JSM-100 and the AS-2000 indeed have their subtle differences, and they're both fantastic in their own right.
The AS-2000 indeed carries that tri-switch setup, reminiscent of the earlier AS-200 model. Meanwhile, the JSM-100 focuses on a different playability aspect, offering a compound radius neck and jumbo frets. These differences in the neck design might cater to varying playing styles and preferences.
In terms of their uses, it often comes down to personal taste and what feels comfortable for your playing. While both guitars may seem somewhat interchangeable on the surface due to their quality and heritage, exploring the nuances in their playability, tonal characteristics, and how they resonate with your style would be the best way to make a decision.
    Hope this helps!

I also own an Ibanez, it's a hollowbody though. It's the AG85, which I modded and I installed a SD SH2 in the neck and an SH59 in the bridge. The neck is wonderful for jazz and mellow stuff, sweet cleans. I also put a push pull system for an additional position, so I have out of phase sounds too. The bridge pickup has some growl but its pretty clear sounding too. Since the body its a bit smaller doesn't feedback as much. I just love it. Ibanez makes very great stuff for the money.

❤My first experience with Ibanez was in 1981;I had no money,so I got a Destroyer ll because it was cheap,in short order,I realized it “destroyed “ every other guitar I’d played 😊(Gibson,Fender,Gretsch) How I wish I’d kept it 😢! 43 years later,I’m playing my AS200 Prestige!I LOVE 💕 this guitar!! I play most styles,hi&low volume&it EXCELS❤!Should also mention, the neck is a flat plane,it’s intonationally accurate,&has great tuning stability ❤😊

I have the Ibanez JSM 10 and it is amazing! Scofield started playing AS200 at begining of his career, then, when got success, he created his own custom guitar based in old AS200. My favorite teacher, Chema Saiz, owns one of that old vintage As200. The sound is insane!

Great guitar and rather seldom seen.
In the vein of fabulous Japanese craftmanship, the Yamaha SA2200 is right up there with the John Scofield sig. They have much in common including the more elegant horns ( compared to the Mickey Mouse horns of the ES-335), resonance and flawless built and finish.

I have the black JSM-20, which is built out of linden. I love the tone, but the wood is soft and dings easily.
I love how the front pickup has it’s own selector switch between humbucking or single coil - very useful.
    I love the neck!
I added a Deusenberg tremolo, which works great.
I use a Line 6 Pod Express on the clean setting which is super.
All in all, a great work horse. I play out with it all the time.
I also have the Pat Metheny PM2AA, which I also love.
    Ibanez makes fantastic guitars!

I have a choice es335 and a recently-bought Sire H7v which is more-or-less an es335 with P90s - but much cheaper so I can play it at bar gigs without worry. It's extremely versatile and build, fit and finish are top-drawer. £600.00 with a load of gold bling - handsome as Larry.
I have no Ibanez guitars but I have huge respect for the marque and I wouldn't mind one of those for Christmas.

I prefer Ibanez for jazz because It has more bright, Acoustic sound, works better in bigband context, mix well with sax and horns, to my ears. I put halfround strings in my Ibanez. I like It. I am a big Scofield fan and I also have an Ibanez 335 style guitar. Oddly enough, not beause of Sco but probably for similar reasons. I have an AS135 that is Chinese built, and has different specs, but with great fit and finish. I notice your guitar also has that bell like chime, maybe because of the overall guitar structure and ebony finger board? I have Fralin pickups in mine, but that bell like quality was there even before the pickup change.

I had one and loved the neck and flawless finish but the sound of the pickups never really quite worked for me. I sold it and bought a 1996 Ibanez AM200 (their smaller body semi hollow) which although it has the same super 58 pickups sounds a lot sweeter to my ear. perhaps the pickups have changed a bit over the years - or maybe its something to do with the construction of the guitar itself

Have JSM10, the cheaper version made in Malaysia. Also quite heavy. But not a bad guitar, available for around 1300 euros! The JSM100 is obviosly made in Japan to higher quality, and I suspect it sounds darker and smoother. Not sure about the tuners though. To be honest, the JSM10 is a little brighter than I would like. Then again has switch for splitting coils which the jsm100 doesn't have. There is also the question, while jsm is made with laminated maple, is the jsm100 a carved top guitar? Big difference! Of course have Gibson L5-CES here which is my baybe, super guitar. But been longtime Scofield fan. Just couldn't afford this guitar. But nothing wrong with JSM10! Very high quality! Looks gorgeous as well. So you won't do wrong there as well.

I had one in 1980 ( really wanted a Alvin Lee or Chuck Berry 330-they cost then -3 times the price), The Ibanez had a beautiful finish , nice neck, the coil split switch was uh. Had a real hard time getting it to stay in tune-had a fine adjustment at the bridge- Cost $400.00 new . Traded it for a new Ibanez Strat " lawsuit" with a maple fretboard-that always stayed in tune. I still have it. People who are "guitar junkies' think it's great. Sounds exactly like Clapton's Strat w/ 5 way pickup selector on the LAYla record w/ a Fender Tube.. I used to go through a Vox Berkley w/ a Big Miff and a Vox Wah. Man that was alot of noise. iBANEZ MAKES NICE GUITARS.

To love an instrument is such a privilege.
I do want to say my unsolicited opinion about set-up: do it yourself. Live on the wild side and have a bit of diy-sfunctional love with your instrument

      @tinajackel  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

no i have to disagree....setting an instrument up properly is a profession. i ve seen so many instrument being " set up" by their owners and most of the time they are doing the instrument a diservice

@tinajackel ok, agree to disagree then. I really like to do it, i think that's why. I also know musicians who don't know how to adjust the truss rod, for me its almost like not knowing how to turn the tuners. If it feels right, and sounds right, it's right. For me.

Just to make clear, I have huge respect for your knowledge and music skills which are far beyond mine. I'm just someone who likes to tweak things myself , that's all. Do what's right for you of course

The bit you shouldn't mess with is the nut - because, unlike everything else, there's no way back. You need the tools, you need to understand inter-active and design stuff like neck relief, back-of-the-nut relief, materials, string gauge etc and it's crucial to the action to get it right. No reason why not but experience counts and it's best given to an experienced pro unless you really want to butcher your own guitar. My IMHO - C&G qualified 1974, London, England.
Everything else? Definitely play with it. Anything you can do, you can undo in minutes.
Unless you start on the frets. You need the guy that knows what you-or-any-other-owner has messed with just by looking at it for about thirty seconds and if that's not you, leave frets and the nut to a pro. Fretboards tell stories!

"Best" jazz guitar in the world? There is no such thing, It's a matter of personal choice. The best jazz guitarists in history have all played different instruments and amplifiers from Gibson, Maccaferri, Fender, Gretsch, Guild, D'Angelico, Levin, Ibanez, and more. It's all in the hands of the guitarist. If this guitar is best in the world for you, great. It does look like a good instrument.

It truly does. I bought my AS100 when they were new in 1981. I think it cost $850 Canadian Dollars, including tax and financing. It was less expensive than a Gibson 335 and about the same as a Gibson SG.

    I have a 1981 AS200 … they can be a bit heavy .. though the sounds is WONDERFUL …
But recently I just ordered an AM series … (AM153…. Art Star level …. The Prestige level AM is a bit unaffordable for the present moment … but I’d be interested in that model well in the future
