I have been mastering this for all of ten minutes and I have a tip (but correct me if I am wrong). I think if it feels like you are doing it right but it doesn't look very pronounced you should try moving the pen closer to the tip of your fingers for the animation.

I have 2 tips: 1. Be Patient 2. Spin the pen slowly, and do not force it to move quickly. This way it is easy and smooth, and not cause your pen to fly away and move exaggeratedly.
I saw this video at least a 10 times I don't know after 3 weeks,my brain automatically executed this trick perfectly. For the first time in life,I feel proud of my brain
advice: do not use so much force with the index finger, just make it safe from where it is held and with the index finger move the pen, it will only turn around.
Another advice use different type of pens the longer and thinner it is the easier if you dont have long pens try putting another cap at the end of ur pen that already has one so it makes the pen longer and easier to spin the smaller it is the harder it is to spin
0:57 - for those struggling this is i'd say the most important part of the tutorial. Once you realise how the pen is supposed to move you can start replicating it, but in a more sloppy way and with a smaller 'circle'. Initially, I thought the pen goes around your index finger because I wasn't paying attention but now this key detail has helped greatly.
