    I’m super grateful for this video. I’m not a musician but always loved music and videogames, I learned about music trackers about 8-ish years ago and always wanted to learn but never took the time to actually learn, now that I want to make a nes cover of a track from a game I find myself falling in love with trackers again and this video just covered what I need to get started from 0.

    • @MatthewIvic

      That's a useful tool for any hex number greater than 15. If you want to track quickly and efficiently, I still recommend memorizing the hex values A through F. Single digit values are used extensively throughout the program, and it's only six new symbols to learn. Good luck! 😆

    Wondering if there's much (or any) difference between FamiTracker vs MPT or even FastTracker 2 in terms of functionality...? Is there a specific retro connection with FamiTracker and the game music world? I'm a bit of an XM/mod maker from back in the day... 🎧💙

    • @MatthewIvic
      @MatthewIvic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for the comment, Beat Therapy! I dig your music. Happy to see so many tracker musicians leave comments here. :)
      In terms of functionality, FamiTracker emulates the NES/Famicom's audio hardware directly; therefore, FamiTracker's limits are equivalent to the NES/Famicom's audio production capabilities. The program's functions, or features, are then designed to manipulate mostly simple waveforms (square, triangle, saw, etc.) and basic sampling (DPCM).
      MPT/FastTracker are sampled/plugin based music trackers. Their functionality is based around the programmer's conception of the program itself. They're capable of A LOT more than FamiTracker and are much more complex. As an XM/mod maker, I'm sure you know. XD
      As far as the retro connection, FamiTracker creates authentic 5 channel 2A03 based NES/Famicom music, so a lot of composers like it for that reason!
      Hope that answers your questions!

    How was vibrato generally done back in the day on the NES?

    • @MatthewIvic
      @MatthewIvic  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Pretty similar to modern synths! The vibrato effect (effect 4) is essentially an LFO with two parameters: frequency and depth. The frequency modulates the rate of the waveform (speed of vibrato) and the depth modulates how much the note is changed by. Both values are in hex 0-F.

      You can create music with a PC (Windows works) and computer keyboard. You don't necessarily need a MIDI controller, but you can use one if you like. Personally, I think it's slower composing with a MIDI keyboard compared to computer keyboard! Hope that helps.

    How do you program the C effect to stop music like you say at 3:55

    • @MatthewIvic
      @MatthewIvic  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      For any channel, move your caret (grey input box) to the effects column (the fourth column in any instrument channel). Hit the space bar to enter record mode (the row will be highlighted red). Press 'C' on the keyboard and the effect C00 should be programmed in (you don't need to change the effect value 00). That should do it. Let me know if it worked. Hope that helps!

    the \ equal sign doesn't stop the sound that continues when I want it not to

    • @MatthewIvic
      @MatthewIvic  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The \ equal sign triggers the release portion of your instrument's envelope. It sounds like you need to add one to your instrument.
      Add a release phase by opening your instrument up and typing a forward slash ( the "/" symbol) in the envelope field followed by the release you'd like.
      Example to copy and paste in your instruments volume envelope field: 15 / 15 4 3 2 1 0
      The instrument will now trigger the release portion of your instrument's envelope (everything after the / above) at the "=" sign. Play around with the numbers and find something you like.
      Hope that helps!

    • @MatthewIvic
      @MatthewIvic  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Many different ways!
      If you're completely new to FamiTracker, my suggestion would be to transcribe the song and come up with an idea for the arrangement/remix OUTSIDE FamiTracker.
      After that, I'd try inputting the important parts of your arrangement into FamiTracker. This is, most likely, going to be your son's melody/bass/percussion parts.
      From there, I'd work on tweaking instruments, effects, and other nuances until you're happy with the result.
      That's a really general gameplay, but I hope it helps. Feel free to leave more comments as you progress.
      Happy to try and help if I can.
