Thank you Ollie. As an American, I feel this should be mandatory viewing in history class before graduating high school. Possibly the greatest war film ever made.
glad you watch the original japanese audio. they actually got a 6 year old kid to voice setsuko (back before computer editing and digital recording). even after almost 40 years this movie still holds up.
Bring it in,big hug❤❤ this movie destroys me every time. It's a true story BTW. The movie depicts both children dying, but Seto lives IRL; he told Miyazaki that he wished he had died, too.
Beautiful film, thanks Oliver. I haven't seen this in a while and it really got to me in a different way this time. My mom passed just before Christmas and her last words to me were also "thank you." 🕊
Oliver, this is one film that I watched one time and have sworn to myself I would never watch again. It is a film that embodies the word "sad" and as much as I enjoy the catharsis of watching a film that is touching or emotional, this was simply too much. Beautifully made, a true work of art... But too much for me.
A little odd for me to be saying this, given the nature of this movie, but congratulations on reaching 25k! I don't know anyone who wasn't moved emotionally after watching this movie, just so heartbreaking. Thank you for sharing your experience with us.
Good reaction to something very hard to watch. This anime is loaded with symbolism that one often does not catch the first time watching. There is heavy symbolism in the use of the fireflies and even in the color schemes used to depict Seita and Setsuko, as well as many other things. I've watched this a number of times, and I keep noticing things that I didn't see before.
I love the movie, even though it makes me bawl every time I see it. It's an extremely important movie that anyone should watch to gain some look on how it can be living in war and what the innocent civilians gets forced to go through.
The reason anime fans obsess over shoving this down newbies’ throats dates back to the beginning of US anime, when some other fan shoved it down THEIR throats-In the late 80’s/early 90’s, there was almost no other Studio Ghibli on VHS, and precious little that was commercially sub/dubbed, Ghibli or not. Fans would get a little overexcited about any scrap that a small company threw at them, since they could usually only afford to license artsy features rather than series. If some fan demands you sit through Ghost in the Shell or Paprika, the cycle of abuse continues…
I remember Siskel and Ebert loving this movie as well. It had a small theatrical run in the US. Saw it in theaters with friends when I was in high school. For us it was a a very serious and adult film in comparison to the sci-fi stuff that normally came out. But it is very true about early anime fans.
Made my wife watch this for her first time on Christmas Eve. I've slept on the couch ever since.

love that ya watched this it is amazing but sad
it is based on a real story, but obviously he (Akiyuki Nosaka) survived to write a book about it.

Great movie! Never gonna watch it again though...once is enough.
Yep, this movie will destroy you. But it is a must watch. At least one time in your life.
😢
This movie destroyed me when I watched it about 8 years ago. Can never watch it again.
Barefoot Gen is another one like this but, more intense

oh man i would've told you to not watch it..
The US firebombing of Toyko in WWII was deadlier than either of the nuclear bombs.
Thanks, Oliver! 🪦🔥🪰 I finally saw this a few years ago. Loved it.
