      Seriously. Just because the topic is about transgender people doesn't mean we have to literally like every piece of media about the topic. It would be like making a movie about 9/11. It can be done in a tasteful manner, but nobody would think making a musical about 9/11 would be a good idea. Same thing here. I hate that it is getting awards, because I have to think it's only because of the subject matter.

    "I'm Still Here" and Fernanda Torres deserve Oscar recognition! With the resurgence of authoritarianism worldwide, this film's powerful story of resistance against dictatorship is more relevant than ever. It serves as a crucial reminder of the fragility of democracy and the importance of fighting for human rights and justice. The film's exceptional script provides a compelling narrative, while the masterful direction brings the story to life with impactful visuals and emotional depth. Fernanda Torres delivers a nuanced and complex performance, capturing the strength, vulnerability, and unwavering determination of a woman facing unimaginable challenges. Her portrayal is both captivating and deeply moving, resonating with audiences on a profound level. "I'm Still Here" is not just a film; it's a powerful testament to the human spirit and a call to action against oppression, making it a crucial and compelling cinematic experience that deserves to be celebrated.

    the director clearly did not have any intention of portraying Mexican culture OR the cartel OR the trans experience in an artful, nuanced, and meaningful way. he has said himself that Spanish is "the language of developing countries and the poor" and for that reason alone i don't think this movie should have ever been made. it's as if he wanted to capitalize on Mexican cultural motifs without having any respect for Mexican history

      Yeah, he just united everything the big awards like. It's like he was trying to prove a point that moves that check does boxes doesn't need to be actylually inclusive to win. (I think he proved by accident)

    This movie honestly seems like a movie that the South Park creators, or someone like Stephen Crowder would've made to satirize progressive issues, or Oscar Bait movies. That's how badly it handles all its topics. It inadvertently mocks everything it purports to raise up.

    I really think that if you are not hispanic you really can't understand why the acting is so bad (like, nothing they say makes sense) so i understand why if you are an english speaker it might sound decent to you. But also, the story is so bad, like... a narco that suddenly feels bad? Just cuz they are trans? Or is it because they are a woman? Cuz let me tell you, there are plenty of female narcos and they are ruthless. As a mexican, this movie is not even decent, it is just trash.

  • @pablinsky2006

    The director knew that the movie was bad and it will become very evident if the movie was completely in English. That’s the issue with this movie, the songs in English for a native speaker are so cringy and bad. The same happens with the songs in Spanish for native speakers (as me) they’re so bad, cringy and in general, the Spanish used in the whole movie is not how we talk in Mexico or even is grammatically correct.
    They sing bad, the songs are bad, the rhythm of the movie is completely off, the actresses are giving the best effort with the material they have.
    I’m Mexican and I’m fed up of other Mexicans being “offended” for everything. Hate the movie because it’s bad (because it is really bad) not because it offends you.

    Emilia Perez, In case you like this movie... ok. Agree, we all have different taste for films and then I would assume that you are not Mexican.
    You want to talk about the facts, well, here are the facts:
    *This movie only shows all the cliches about Mexican culture and use them/exploits them in the cheapest "Hollywood Representation" to show/display Mexican Culture/Society.
    *There are Mariachi bands and dangerous streets in every city in Mexico, Yes... really ?
    *This film is about Mexico and yet has no Mexican actors. Yes, no good actors in Mexico... really ?
    *What is the best way to show Mexico's social problems ? Yes, a Narco Musical... really ?
    *A film about a Mexican family and the mother does not speak Mexican spanish... really ?
    *If you go to a restaurant or coffee shop in any city in Mexico, you will be kidnapped... really ?
    *The songs in this movie have nothing to do with Mexican culture. Mexican singers... naahh.
    I can't freaking understand why this movie has more Oscar nominations than Casablanca, The Lord of the Rings, Chicago, Titanic, The Revenant, Forrest Gump, Schindler's List ?
    FYI TRUE STORY: The Mexican journalists and students of cinematography had scheduled a meeting with director Jacques Audiard at Cineteca Nacional located in Mexico City on January 14th, needless to say everybody was waiting for him and guess what... he canceled at the last minute.... COWARD.
    Please talk about the facts, that's why most people in Mexico do not like this film. In short, this movie is stupidity at its finest.

    I personally think that theoretically speaking, I can see why the movie got the attention it did given both the unique mixture of genres as well as themes (the fact that trying to embrace yourself does not free one from karma of the past) and the 2 wins at Cannes Film Festival (including a joint Best Actress Cannes prize for Adriana Paz, Karla Sofia Gascon, Selena Gomez, and Zoe Saldana). I also simultaneously see the other side of the argument.
    SIDE NOTE: Given the themes, it is rather fittingly ironic what has transpired the last couple of days regarding Karla Sofia Gascon as a result.

    Ngl I kinda enjoy it in a so-bad-it's-good way in the whole first half, but then it kinda went downhill and boring with the unearned, "redemption" arc. I thought the acting (me personally) is good all around, given the messy script that glosses over most of its subject matter. Is it the worst movie ever? No. But, the praise from critics is just ridiculous. It's basically a glorified soap opera.

    9:54 I agree that it's odd that she was never concerned about the prejudice she may encounter, but her lack of relatability isn't much of an issue. Trans characters can be anything, whether mafia cartel whatever or a fabulous queen.

    • @everybodylovesrae_
      @everybodylovesrae_  6 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      Oh, I wasn't saying she couldn't be a mafia cartel boss or that trans people in general couldn't be specific characters! I'm saying that if you're going to center a movie around transness then there should be a point to actually have the character experience it in a way most trans people relate to, or else it doesn't feel like a true depiction of the trans experience. And considering today's climate, I personally think it's important to show how you can overcome those common struggles trans people face. I also don't think every trans portrayal needs to be centered around the hardships, but considering this film alludes to the risks/struggles via her feeling the need to leave her family and fake her death, it seems relevant here.

    • @Finozzi96
      @Finozzi96 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      yes and the lack of trans characters in most movies and series is an indication that nobody wants them in their entertainment, which is why trump won. People are tired of this woke stuff being handfisted in their modern media, the people had enough

    • @Leo-Galaxy
      @Leo-Galaxy 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@Finozzi96 That’s a typical online perspective. For many people who aren’t glued to the internet all the time, they voted for him because they believed he’d lower the cost of living. But he won’t, and he lied to them. On top of that, there was a global anti-incumbent sentiment. The far-right media is trying to spin it as a backlash against "woke," but that's just ridiculous. Most everyday people either don't care about or don't even understand what that term means anymore, given how vague and overused it’s become. As for trans representation in films, Hollywood is just notoriously slow to adapt, regardless of whether there's demand for it or not.

    • @Leo-Galaxy
      @Leo-Galaxy 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @Finozzi96 Many people who aren’t constantly online voted for him thinking he would help reduce living costs, but he’s not going to do that. There’s also been a global trend of rejecting incumbents. Some media outlets are wrongly blaming it on "woke" culture, but for most people, that term doesn’t have much meaning anymore. When it comes to trans representation in films, Hollywood has always been slow to change, regardless of public demand.
