Fun fact about the frogmen, they pick random guys as leaders in training. Also the frogmen do not show rank on their uniform, if you see a group one could be a captain and another a coporal but they would treat them equal, because they are in the eyes of the frogman corp.

Belgian army does that too for every fighting unit since the very begining of the bootcamp, everyday a recruit is choosed to be what we call "caporal de jour" (day corporal) that gives the activities to the rest of the instruction platoon and is responsible in case of problems of course.

Okay, a short brief on rewards: In the danish armed forces it is stricly forbidden to punish the soldiers in any way, unless a commanding officer has issued a disciplinary punishment according to the military disciplinary law. A work-around is to reward the soldiers instead.
Example: If you forget to lock your locker, you could be issued a 2 kg replica of a key, which you would carry the next day to remind you to lock the f... locker, ie.helping the soldier by rewarding him ;-)
Furthermore it is a way to install the right attitude into the guys, as they have chosen this line of work themselves.

Also the Danish Frogmen actually allow civilians to join and the patrol leader was a civilian.

A great thing about the instructors' language, as addressing the candidates as You in plural. In Danish this is an anachronistic and extremely formal way of speaking to anyone - subordinates or not. The instructors are really laying down the land here.

One thing missing in the subs : The officers are referring to them, not as "you" but "You" - the most formal way to communicate in danish. "De" instead of "du". You'd never say "du" to the queen for example - always "De" and not "your's" (dine) but "Your's" (Deres)

Former sergeant in the Danish army, and we had to do some of the tests we call "Self confidence" tests.
There is ALOT of these tests, and they are all numbered.
One of those we did, was with a hood over our head, had to jump in a lake and swim to shore,
that one really stuck with me, because i can't really swim, but had to suck it up and move on.
Even worse, when not on TV, the instructor will say Ready.
Then you reply "Your name, Number, Ask permission to perform the test"
Instructor will reply "Go ahead, or in some cases wait" and you just wait for well as long as he see fit.

This is a very respectfull way in Danish to talk to someone, it is hardly ever used unless it is to talk to elderly or royals. Or as here frogmen.

A sidenote for the non-native speakers, the form of address from the instructors to the students is a older formal one called "Des" where people were addressed as "De, Deres, Dem". The opposite is "Dus" which allows "Du, Dig, Dine". In todays Denmark its only used when addressing leaders of state, royalty or in similar formal situations.
My assumption is that its used between instructor and student to further form a distance between them.
Also, if you're curious "you" pretty much encompass the entirety of both Des and Dus.

This is part of drown proofing. The WHOLE OBJECTIVE is to stay calm-use your head and think-get ur rhythm and swim.
The one reason that causes people to drown is they panic, stop thinking, stop swimming, and drown. Never never never ever ever ever panic.
Panic causes one to loose focus of breathing. They thrash around and exhaust-thus they drown.

The entire reason for the introductory weeks is not to banish people who have no experience with military 101, it's to see who have the potential to LEARN. As the saying goes, the master has failed more times than most people have even tried, failure is not a crime at this point in their training. Failure only becomes a problem when it's systematically repeated.

I didn't tie my hands and arms or anything, nor was it for any military service, I just did it to see if I could.
I'd jump in, hold my arms and legs still (sometimes I'd slip up, obviously, and use my arms or legs for a bit out of habit) but, when I didn't, the best way I found was basically act like a fish.
Turn sideways and wiggle like a fish, it sounds dumb but it worked fairly well.

What the instructors do is a lot more intentional than what you see at first glance. In example, they don't punk them for not storing the weapon properly. They observe if they do what they have been told and then reward them later if they did something wrong. Also the uniforms are intentionally old outworn uniforms so they focus on the task and not about looking like a fancy sf soldier. They have to prove that they are willing to earn everything.
You should watch the documentary of the final product. It shows what they learn!
    More please!
