Low compression in all cylinders indicate a timing issue. Ol old shade-tree mechanic trick is, when getting a low compression reading, is to squirt a little oil into the cylinder and run the test again. If the compression stays low its a valve problem. If it jumps up towards normal it a ring problem.
@radiodave1 I was thinking it might be an older A6. I've been driving my 2014 A6 Prestige TDI and it's been my favorite car ever. Although several Audi mechanics have told me to sell it before it starts having problems with the diesel systems. So I recently bought a 2018 Prestige A6 with the supercharged 3.0.
@@davidbenji1 supercharged 3.0T will last you awhile. They're as reliable as a German engine can get. 5k oil changes, be ready for waterpump, thermostat, and pcv whenever they break, and that's it.
@mydimeisup5103 Awesome! Thanks! That's good to know and basically why I'm selling my TDI (as much as I love it and it gets incredible mileage) and bought the 3.0 super.
You could hear it had barely any compression just by listening to it crank. A cylinder leak down test should be the next easy step before digging into timing chains etc. At least you'll know straight away if any of the valves aren't sealing, or if the rings/cylinders have any issues👍
It doesn't. These rings get gunked up like crazy and no amount of chemical cleaners will help. Only way to fix it is to install DM revision pistons with the waffle-weave oil control rings (Part# 06H-107-065-DM). Though since this is a pre-2012 car it will also need update connecting rods (Part# 06H-198-401-D) since the DM pistons use 23mm wrist pins while the pre-2012 use 21mm wrist pins.
I'm not a paying member but seriously mate , I love your work bro !! Appreciate all the escapism you've offered over the years. Please don't stop being you !
Marvel isn't the way to go for cleaning carbon deposits and oil rings, it's just not aggressive enough for a piston soak. A BG oil flush/clean kit is probably the best bet, but if you don't want to devote that much time and money, I find that B12 Chemtool works amazing for cleaning up carbon deposits on pistons and rings (and it's cheap and easy to get)... It's what the Prius community uses because they also suffer from the clogged or stuck oil ring issue
If you're doing the crank/cam chains and guides, I'd recommend also doing the balance shaft chain and guides. Its not talked about as much, but the balance shaft chains do stretch as well so it doesn't hurt to replace them while you're in there. Also if this car hasn't already, make sure you get the updated timing chain tensioner (Part# 06K-109-467-K) (though if its made it this long I imagine it was replaced while the lawsuit warranty period was still active).
A big congratulations on your milestone of over 400k subscribers JR! I enjoy seeing the projects of all kinds on the channel, and it is a nice watch to start my day before work. I wonder what the service history is like on that A4. Best wishes!
Just a headsup with those engines, I have this same engine in the GTI and I noticed your Spark plugs being fouled up. I strongly suggest you change the PCV valve ( Or possibly the whole system its inexpensive ) Mine went bad at same time as timing chains and blew out the rear main seal. Also to note when you showed the Valves on camera I noticed the carbon build up. Its a clear sign this engine has had bad oil change intervals and run in cheap regular gas. These engines require 91 and above. Mine runs on 93 and has a stage 2 tune and makes just shy of 300hp I did timing chains on mine and I also did NGK spark plugs and R8 Coil packs
Congrats!!! I’ve been here since you were thinking about quitting your day job if you got to 100k. I think it’s worked out well despite the decision being made for you. 🍻
2.0T usually bend the valves when they go out of time. I have two that someone replaced the timing set and the valves were bent and decided to stitch the car.
There's a fella on youtube called 'eurotrash motorsports'. He had one of these that was burning oil and had low compression. His sister had one with the same engine burning oil. He fixed both of them by piston soaking them both with Berrymans b12 for a couple of cycles. Maybe that'll help you on this one. Congrats on the 400.
JR, most vw-audi diagnostic scanners can tell you cam timing deviation. I used obdeleven to diagnose the timing chain was out -5.1 which meant I was driving on borrowed time.
These engines will show low compression if the carbon is out of control because it keeps the valves from fully sealing. Would definitely consider pulling the intake manifold in addition to the timing job it probably also needs. Congrats on 400k!
The Audi 2.0 turbo was a bit weak out of the factory. The previous generation 1.8 turbo was better when stock in my opinion. However, this is the VAG , so you know that there's enough aftermarket support to build that 2.0 real strong.
If its out of time the compression check is irrelivent, the valves will be open when they shouldn't be so you will get a bad reading, there is a slight amount of wiggle room as far as how off before they hit pistons but they could still be open during the test.
JR, you should explain about this TH-cam membership thing. I’ve been watching and been a sub for quite awhile and I did not know that “membership” was even a thing.
Hi Steve! JRGO says you know a lot about Audis. I’ve been dealing with multiple misfires on a 2012 Audi S4 over the past four months. Tried everything. VW and Audi can’t figure it out… maybe you can? Send me a chat if you’re up for a pop quiz. Thx!
Acura did something like this with Base, FWD TLs and TLXs... very much an odd ball choice in the showroom. Lexus IS250's and Infiniti G25's were likely better 'base model' purchases at the time. 10 years ago was so awesome compared to today's DI/turbo mess.
I had one of these FWD A4s as a company car. The main problem I had was just knowing that the engine was down-rated from what goes into the Quattro models. Otherwise, it was an enjoyable car for the 3-year lease. Best part was I had zero financial responsibility for it!
Jrgo... seriously... how you know so much about Car's? Nomatter if they Run or not.. you know why & can make them run.. i been subscribe to this channel. Because I ❤❤❤❤❤ Cars..😆
OBSERVATION it amazes me how year after year car manufacturers cant fix the problems in cars or produce a car that doesnt have a myriad of issues. If they do produce a decent car, they then change its design or change the engine or manufacturing process that continues the plague of broken unreliable cars. Whats also amazing is that these manufacturers build and test race cars.
Can you buy a w204 c class 08-11? Those are somewhat decent style and can be reliable. Maybe one with the key/steering lock issue since there’s affordable workarounds or if you can find one with a bad engine, they are pretty module so should be an easy swap
Jr squirt some oil into the cylinder and redo the compression test. If the compression builds back up then your rings are bad if there is no change then the valve seats are bad.
I had that car and it sucked bad. Burned oil, timing chain skipped, exhaust issues. Spent $4000 in the first few months owning it. I sold it at a loss and got a Corolla. Never looked back.
The Audi that I find interesting, is the Audi TT with the baseball glove leather interior! The rarest mk1 TT is the Quattro Sport of 2005, limited to 800 units.
