Pitch Black was a movie about opposites. When it gets dark everything that was in the light gets reversed. The man with children has none. The hero is a drug addict, the villain is the hero. The boy is a girl. The pilot who was willing to kill everyone to save herself, sacrifices herself to save everyone.

My friend’s mom worked with Vin Diesel at a gas station years before he was famous. His name was Mark and one day he came into the store, told them he was moving to Hollywood and changing his name to Vin Diesel, and that he was gonna be a famous actor. They supported his decision but they obviously didn’t believe it would actually happen. And now he’s one of the most famous actors on the entire planet.

I played the double feature on my XBOX 360 a longgg time ago and I still remember almost everything about it. they aren't movie tie ins, they're cannon to the films but they're their own stories set around the events of Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick. they're really good insights on the universe and the people in it. the games were way ahead of their time.

And watched that movie every night before I went to bed. I was obsessed with it and wanted to be just like Riddick. I wished my eyes were like him. I even tried to act tougher because of him lol. My dad told me at the end of the week it was time to go back to the video store to return all the tapes we rented. And as he was driving the van, I took the pitch black tape and threw it in the back seat. My dad told me to go inside and return the videos. A few days later the video store kept calling my dad saying there were late fees for pitch black and he argued with them every day on the phone that we had already returned it lol. And every night before bed I’d lock my door and turn the volume down and keep watching that damn movie and smile the whole time. Eventually my dad found the movie tucked away in my dresser under my socks and got pretty upset about it but then laughed afterwards then called the video store and asked them how much it would be to just buy the movie from them. I can’t remember how much it was, maybe 20 bucks or something but he bought it for me! I’ll always have a special place in my heart for pitch black

I love this movie! It holds up well, and the effects are great given the lower budget. Chronicles of Riddick was an ambitious sequel, but would have worked better as a standalone film. The third movie was a letdown. I was hoping for more of the Chronicles storyline. This was like the Alien franchise with a solid first movie, a sequel that expanded the universe of the story, and a third movie that pulled it back into a claustrophobic retread of the first movie.

One visual I want to highlight is the brief renaissance painting that was the "I was supposed to die it France." scene where it's revealed he was surrounded the entire time. That was a masterclass in revealing the monster, its scary stealth abilities and en masse, as well as the visual itself which could've been painting on a cathedral ceiling on some other planet.

I LOVE THIS MOVIE! one of my childhood favorites. The eclipse scene, when all the monsters comes out, is one of my favourite in Sci-fi. If only the other stuff in the franchise have been on the same level. Let's hope for another proper Riddick movie in the future, maybe Fury Road-style? i can only hope.

At the start, I see Pitch Black right next to Tremors. I used to watch Tremors with my brother a lot because it was on cable all the time. I watched it again last week because I hadn't seen it in years, and it holds up so well that I had to watch it a few times. It's so well-written, and the characters are fun and endearing.
On the other hand, I've never seen Halloween, so maybe this is the year to fix that.

Film is a great example of Ebert’s line, “It ain’t what it’s about it’s how it’s about it,”
We’ve seen this kind of movie a million times before - but through strong characters, well written dynamics between them, & snappy pacing, it’s an engaging movie.

Furya is confirmed, but as always, Vin Diesel is taking his time instead of milking this franchise out of interest! The 2nd one wasn't all that great, but Riddick is quite good. Great choice for a review! I wish they delved into the lore a little more explaining how quick he heals at the beginning of Riddick. He was born with these eyes (or was it engineered?), heals faster and can endure more pain than the average human because of his race. I think that his strength is greater too for it. Can't wait for Furya! The pauses between chapters is quite long...

"Scrappy underdog" is exactly right. That's basically the way I viewed "Pitch Black" back then. A very cool lower budget sci fi movie that delivered. And I liked this first one better than the more expensive sequels too. Lean and mean.

Pitch Black was one of the first rated R films I saw as a kid. I don’t personally believe it’s aged very well but it is certainly very special for it’s time. And I’ll readily admit that it was my first ‘alien’ experience.

I had almost totally forgotten about this movie until you brought it up! I really like this movie, and I think all of the actors did a great job performing their roles. The movie didn't feel like it had to be big. It just felt like it had to make sense for the setting, and it did that for me! I like Vin Diesel in his more modest roles. He's a bit too macho to be macho (if that makes any sense). For me, he plays better as an average grounded guy with macho tendencies. I think that's what sold him in this movie. He was flawed. He had flawed motivations. But, at the end he cared enough to put his life on the line for the people still struggling to survive! I would like to take it as a movie of hope! Sometimes even the worst humans can show us what is good about humanity. It's either that, or the executives are gaslighting us and broadcasting that it is okay for us to root for the bad guys, as long as they come back and do something nice at the end. I think I'm going to watch this movie again just to see if Riddick didn't cause the crash in the first place😅

Totally loved this film back in the day; a true rarity to see a film like this and actively root for the villain to come out on top for its time. He can preach all day about family, but Riddick will forever be Vin Diesel's best role.
Also if you haven't, please play Escape from Butcher Bay and Assault on Dark Athena; Butcher Bay is actually BETTER than any of the movies, features Vin Diesel's voice, and is probably one of the best stealth action games of all time. Hope we see more of this series.

Surprisingly, the two Riddick video games are fantastic. They respect the source material and expand the Riddick lore. It’s too bad they are not available in current generation consoles.
