I just watched the first 3 films pretty recently and they’re just as amazing as I remember them. Brought me back to my childhood. I’ll pretend that they didn’t made more films after AWE.
Michael Eisner almost killed this film. If you watch Defunctland's episode on Michael Eisner (forgot what the video was called), Eisner was so against this film and Johnny Depp's character but the producers did not back down and stood their ground to finish making this masterpiece of a film.
@@lykanprince7 Eisner's last major decision as the head of Disney was this film, and especially the decision not to kill it after they'd already spent a ton of cash and had to spend a ton more. From his perspective, it was a huge risk, but I have to give him props for taking it.
This flick has held up REALLY well past 20 years. Still so much fun. Great characters. Fun action sequences. Still incredible special effects, and one of the best scores of the century (so far).
No matter what we all think of the sequels, I think we can all agree that this movie is still boatloads of fun and is among the best live-action Disney films.
@@thedinosaurdiscovery honestly, all three movies were incredible and original - I would have those movies than what hot trash we have nowadays. Especially the character progression with Will and Elizabeth both acclimating to the pirate life (which they both did great).
I loved how Jack had a serious side to him in the first movie, and how you were never quite sure whether he was brilliant or just crazy. There were some hidden depths to him. The later movies just made him crazy, and therefore he lost a lot of the mystique and allure.
Barbossa is one of the best villains. He's actually really tragic considering all he wants to do is get the gold so he can bring it back to that chest so he can not be immortal as it tortures him. And Rush's performance is honestly Oscar worthy.
My #1 comfort movie. I just saw it tonight in theaters again- my god what a classic. I remember watching it as a 7 year old girl with my jaw on the floor, covering my eyes at the skeletons, feeling so physically inside this world and movie it was almost hard to come back to reality. A perfect story and cast. It brings me so much joy and happiness, the wonder it brought me as a kid remains today. Thank you for covering it ❤
The true story behind the Pirates score is amazing. At first, Alan Silvestri was hired by the director Gore Verbinski but Jerry Bruckheimer wanted to go in a different direction (less traditional, more rock n'roll), so Badelt was brought on (one of Zimmer's protégés) and Zimmer wrote the main "he's a pirates" tune. This is all just in the middle of when Zimmer and his team was in production for the The Last Samurai and Ridley Scott's Matchstick Men scores. They had only a few weeks to do the score before the movie had to be delivered, so there were lots of composers brought on to do heavily lifting. Anyone who worked on the music team for the Pirates movies always talk about how insane they were. I know for Pirates 3, there were like 8-10 different composers writing music for it, aside from Zimmer, and Bruckheimer is super involved in the music too. Iconic scores though, 100%.
Apparently for the first movie, Zimmer hired composers such as Ramin Djawadi, James Dooley, Nick Glennie-Smith, Steve Jablonsky, Blake Neely, James McKee Smith, and Geoff Zanelli to worked with him on the score because of the tight schedule he has
All of this is true! HZ couldn’t do the film bc he was contractually bound to the Last Samurai at the time. When Bruckheimer came calling with the SOS, Zimmer write a theme suite in one night and his team fleshed it out throughout the film. Everyone did handful of cues and I believe Klaus got the credit because in the he did more cues than the others. The majority of the music is based on Hans’s suite so one could argue the music is still by Hans Zimmer, wotu arrangements by the Remote Control productions team :) Great score regardless!
Alan Silvestri was reputedly kicked off the score because Jerry Bruckheimer disliked the 'traditional' tone that favoured organic instruments like woodwinds. Bruckheimer also favoured Zimmer because of their past relationship. I would have loved to have heard Silvestri's work on this series (although he later came good with the Marvel movies).
@@seanwilson4350Apparently Silvestri never got past 1M1 (the first scene in the film). Silvestri had worked with Verbinski on his last movie and I think Bruckheimer, who's obviously a huge force, wanted to go in a different direction especially because of his long-running relationship with Hans. Lots of business drama but of course turned out great.
The original Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy is one of my favorite trilogies of all time. My wife and I watch it every summer. We have gotten tattoos based on them. My wife walked down the isle at our wedding to a song from at world’s end. It’s so sad that they don’t make movies as amazing and epic as these anymore. Definitely what I would call classic!
The introduction to Jack Sparrow making it to stop a sinking ship is perfect example of how to tell a characters story under 2 minutes without saying a word. You immediate understand the character without ANY expiation- movie story telling done right
I recently had the freaking luck to attend A Hans Zimmer concert (free tickets!). It was incredible. Just AMAZING. He mentionned the history behind the soundtrack for Pirates of the Caribbean. When him and his awesome band finished playing said soundtrack there was a standing OVATION. 20 000 people cheered like I've never heard before.
@@patriciazandilencube4597 ah yes absolutely. Was born in 92 and the lion king was me loving hans zimmer before even knowing who he was. When I found out years later it was so powerful
One of my favourite movies growing up. I used to play the DVD, specifically the final battle, and jump around the linving room with a plastic sword. I'm so glad people still recognize it as a classic so many years later. Amazing perfomances, great music, perfect script, fun action... this movie really has it all.
I will forever remember the scene that the Black Pearl rolled into Port Royal at night. It's canons drawn and the air foggy, the eerie music that played as it sailed in menacingly. Such a powerful scene that always sends a shiver down my spine.
Seeing this movie in theaters was a core memory for me. The audience WENT NUTS when Jack Sparrow tripped over the railing of the fort at the end. People were laughing so hard and burst into applause. Was just amazing.
Same. It's hard to picture now for many people considering how goofy the later films in the series got but the first film really was such an unexpectedly great experience for those who saw it for the very first time.
To me, as a kid, growing up with these movies; they *were* my Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Back To The Future, etc. I haven't felt excitement for a movie like I had for Dead Man's Chest and even the third movie. Are 4 and 5 not as a good? 100%, but I still like all of them in their own way. This movie series means SO much to me, and I think for a lot of people as well.
I was a 12 year old girl when this movie came out. And all of my friends were obsessed with this movie for years. The amount of fanfiction generated by this film has to be astounding. The collective crushes on Orlando Bloom, Johnny Depp, and Keira Knightley alone must have spawned whole islands of fanfiction.
I wish I had been a 12 year old girl when this movie came out. It would have been the exactly right movie at exactly the right time! At age 12, I was attempting on writing my own pirate novel, with the following plot (not kidding!): A young girl from a rich, noble family is kidnapped onto a pirate ship, falls in love with a guy waaay below her societal status, is sent over the plank and lands on a deserted island... and the main protagonist was called Jack.
It brings me so much joy seeing this movie still getting love today. It was my star wars, my Indiana Jones, my avengers to kids today. This and Nolan's batman films are what made me love film growing up. Johnny Depp deserves so much praise for this performance.
This movie was my ‘Signs’. I remember seeing it for the fist time in my living room after my mom and sister rented it from Blockbuster and after it was done I came out of it feeling as though movies were the greatest things in the world. Now I’m at film school studying screenwriting, and this movie played a huge role in getting me here.
Hah, I commented before seeing this but I said the exact same thing! Black Pearl was my Signs. It didn't lead to a career in filmmaking for me, but it captivated my life for a generation and shaped me forever.
I love your words on why it feels so amazing to see certain movies in theatres. When they re-released Return of the Jedi to theatres, I was so excited and bought tickets right away, only to have so many people tell me "what a waste of money" or "I would much rather watch that in my own home." If you want to watch a movie at home, that's totally fine, but there's something just so incredible about seeing one of your favourite films in the theatre that I feel only big movie fans really understand.
i know they both got a lot of slack upon release, but i genuinely think dead man's chest and at world's end are two of the best and most well crafted blockbusters ever made, and as a trilogy those first 3 films work phenomenally for me. it has a genuine sincerety and creativity and care for the craftsmanship that you don't see too often these days.
Bill Nighy as Davy Jones is enough to say that Dead Man's Chest is an amazing movie. It was probably the best motion capture work I've seen since Andy Serkis as Gollum. Absolutely flawless CGI and acting from Nighy
Great movie. So quotable. What I might love the most is how tight the story is; how Sparrow pieces together who Will is the moment they meet and seems to go along to get free… when in reality he’s putting a plan into action to retake his ship and defeat the curse. So good.
For me, the writing is so mind-blowing. I was obsessed with POTC when I was a teen (I can't count how many times I watched it). I watched it recently, and I still caught new jokes and story/plot points. Every single word and conversation is purposeful and important to push the plot and develop the world and the characters.
The humour works, the music is epic, the action is great, the sets and costumes are amazing, the VFX holds up even today (looove the zombie pirate effects!) - it all just works so well. Absolute modern classic.
Curse of the Black Pearl was probably the first film I ever watched, I was born in 05 and when I was a little Kid I was constantly nagging my parents to put the “Jack Sparrow DVD” on which is what I used to call it. This movie will forever hold a place in my heart and Johnny Depp has been my No.1 hero ever since.
Back when I worked at Blockbuster, we normally always had to play the company advertisements on the TVs. But in the evenings, when everything slowed down, I would always resort to putting on 2 films to entertain customers. One was Aladdin, and the other was Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl. It never EVER gets old, boring, or overplayed.
I’m glad you finally made a video about this. I’ve always thought this movie was extremely underrated from a critical standpoint. I absolutely adore this movie and was one of my favorite movies as a kid. I have a very good memory of watching it with my dad, my brother and my grandfather, and how all of us loved it.
My buddy and I were obsessed with this movie when it came out. We would hang out on the weekends, drink rum, and watch this flick. Still holds up as one of the best adventure movies ever made.
This was the first PG-13 film I saw in the theatre. I was into pirates when I was young, mainly due to Treasure Planet being released the year prior and growing up with Hook so I was pretty excited for this movie. My grandparents took me and my brothers to it and we had a blast.
This is my favorite adventure film of all time. 100% I love this film. And I also love Dead Man's Chest and At World's End. And I'm glad they never made a fourth and fifth film.
@isty9578 It's not the cult of disney, it's the cult of woke, and they are losing their shits over this movie cause they can't admit that there are worse examples of slavery than the American slave trade. That, and also because they support sexualizing children.
I was 12 during the summer of 2003. Spent all summer with my best friend going on wild adventures, and randomly went to the theater one day with him and his dad and saw this film. No idea what it was or who was in it. I was absolutely blown away by it. The moment the Interceptor and the Black Pearl began battling, I fell in love with the theater. This film changed everything for me. Also, about the score, you can hear faint relative notes of the hook in The Rock (1996) in which Hans Zimmer composed. You can hear it as Mason is escaping the hotel.
Gosh I thought I you had accidentally uploaded an old review by accident. Such a classic. I went and saw this with my sister at the cinemas the first time way back when it came out. We both loved it so much we took the whole family the next day and it has been a family fave ever since. That opening scene with Jack Sparrow riding the sinking ship, it was just amazing. Who knew at the time that it was a metaphor for the future of the series. The original still holds true though and Its in my collection :) To recommend some older pirate movies just cause. The Crimson Pirate, The Flame and the Arrow (both Burt Lancaster) and Captain Blood (Errol Flynn). I think there are nods to all of these classics in The Black Pearl. Especially The Crimson Pirate.
Hey Chris, any plans on reviewing Sound of Freedom. One of the most important films of our time. You ask us to support independent films and it seems strange you haven't done so with this film. I'm rooting for you to stand up to any misleading opinions on this film.
I love the second movie, Bill Nighy as Davy Jones is some of the best CGI Motion Capture thing performance I've seen, probably since Andy Serkis as Gollum
I think one of the reasons Jack's intro is so amazing is we also get the impression with the epic music is that this was his plan all along. Especially the way he walks onto the dock so confidently nonchalant.
7 year old me watched it 3 times on vhs that christmas. Thankyou mum & dad for knowing the stocking is for keeping you in your room in those early hours. One of the greatest trilogies of all time
Watched it as a 7-year-old in a theater. It blew my mind, changed my world, and made me fall in love with movies. It’s as gritty and sweaty as the first three Indy films, and similarly incredibly tight, fun, and scary and adultish at times, while still being okay for kids. A masterpiece.
The Pirates trilogy is one of my favourite things on planet earth, and no character like Captain Jack Sparrow has mattered or played such an integral part of my childhood like he has.
I was 14 yrs old when it came out and I couldn't agree more. It captivated our generation and did become our SW. I've loved and followed these movies since the first one. CotBP is an absolute class though, there's no other film like it 👏 Jack's entrance: one of best character entrances in a movie ever
This is and always will be one of my favorite movies, I saw it in theaters as a child and it's always stuck with me. Did not expect to see a review of it this many years later!! But I'm really glad it resonated with you as well, you voiced something I have been preaching for years!
I was 9 years old when this movie came out. Though I never watched it on theater, my dad got it as soon as it came out on DVD, and I watched it with him and my brothers one Sunday afternoon, eating pizza in our living room. Oh my God! We all fell in love with this movie because it is so incredibly good! Just like you said, every aspect of it WORKS flawlessly! And just like you said too, we don't get movies like this anymore, and that is actually kind of depressing. Love the video!❤
I was 14 and my brother bought tickets and took me to see it at an AMC cinema. Had no idea what to expect, didn’t even realize it was based on a Disney ride until after seeing it. But when we walked out we sang and hummed the score in the car all the way home. We became obsessed with the movie and Johnny Depp. Later I bought it on DVD and made my parents watch it. It became my dads favorite movie. This began the tradition of a family movie day out for every Pirates movie after that.
Let's not forget he's so correct with his opinions and facts about potc. That movie is a masterpiece, screw what critics have said about it. I hope Chris reviews potc 2 and 3 because they are all iconic masterpieces.
This movie was HUGE when it came out back in 2003. Everyone at school was obsessed with it and it started this big "pirate craze" throughout the country and pop culture. 2003-2006 every Halloween, literally 1/3 of all the kids would be dressed as pirates.
I'm so glad I clicked on your review of this. You're such a great critic and storyteller. I appreciate you giving some insight into your past and why you weren't able to see this in theaters years back when it was first in theaters. Your breakdowns are always on point. When I saw the length of this video, I was already pretty psyched because I knew you'd go into a lot more detail than you typically would. It's awesome to see someone talk about a film-or whatever it is they are passionate about. I have A-List, so now I'm thinking of watching this in theaters for the first time as well. Great video and review!
Hey Chris, are you planning on making a review for Sound of Freedom? It’s so good, and you making a video about it will bring much needed attention to the problem we have in this world!
Wait...it was around for years, but only now just got released. So a movie that no one has seen yet, and can't be streamed even though made years ago, shouldn't be released? I'm confused
What you said about critics is the main reason I follow no other critic but you. So many try to be edgy, or different or write like they hate movies and their jobs. Thank you for being honest, not following or going against trends in movies and giving reasons for what you feel are the good and the bad points of each movies. You rock! I love your reviews!
I saw this movie in theater 7 times when it came out. I absolutely loved it. And then in concert band (I was in high school) we played a medley of the soundtrack and I can't tell you how fun it was to get to play that.
I haven't felt that happy energy from the good old days in Chris for a while (most likely because of everything that's been going on in his life) but is nice to see that happy energy and love Chris always broguht to his reviews.
This movie was my childhood, I am glad I am not the only one with a period of rewatching this movie and everything on that DvD over&over again I remember rewatching this a couple of years ago and realizing just how sharp the writing is, it's one of the most perfectly paced movie of all time.
I love this film, never gets old, absolutely brilliant characters and fun story that is missing in modern cinema for the most part, brilliant and unexpected review
Early 2000s was the best time for epic fantasy franchises. Having Pirates, Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter all coming out around the same time, we were so spoiled.
I was 13 when Pirates of the Caribbean came out and i was fortunate enough to watch it in theaters. Im pretty sure we only went to see it because my mom had a crush on Johnny Depp. I walked out of that movie a changed movie goer. I couldnt stop thinking about the adventure and the world they had built. Watching the skeletons walking under the boat in the moonlight gave me shivers.
I was a probably 15 or so when production for this movie started, and when I saw it in theaters, I was 18 or something. The small Caribbean island called St.Vincent and the Grenadines was where most of this movie was shot, my Dad had already booked a position to build some of the set and I would always watch the badge, a skull, that iconic logo and just think wow. The scene where the rum got set on fire, was shot on one of the smaller Grenadine islands. I loved the fact that they chose a Caribbean island, that not many international ppl know about to film.😊
I was 22 and thought it was going to be bad. It was an incredible theater experience. I stopped at my friends house afterwards and said "you need to see this movie. Trust me". I think that was a story many have.
This movie and the trilogy itself is so completely rewatchable it's insane the level of detail that went into making a ride at an amusement park one of the most recognized film franchises ever. I know people say the 2nd and 3rd are not good but I disagree I think those movies on their own make for one of the more underappreciated trilogies ever made. Ya the first one is still the best but the other two still offer for great moments.
People that hate the second film are clowns tbh. The second one is probably the most re watchable and the best one, the water wheel mexcian stand-off fight between will Jack and Norrington is a classic
@@lakernation26 while that moment in the movie is amazing especially for how practical it was I actually disagree I think the 1st and 3rd are the most rewatchable
@@OrionInSpace I get that but also 2-3 go hand in hand so it’s best to watch it back to back haha. I agree 3 is underrated I just hated the multiple jacks scene in Davy Jones locker that shit I skip
I recently rewatched this on TV and what I noticed most was the subtleties. Like I’ve seen this movie a dozen times over the years but only this time did I see a particular detail during the excellent escape from Port Royal scene: When they are using the rowboat (and insane upper body strength) to walk on the sea floor, Jack steps in a crab pot. Haha funny gag with the guy on the dock seeing the buoy move along on its own. What’s *great* though is on the relatively quick pan up the stern of the ship you can see that the crab pot is hanging off the captain’s quarters! And the rope is hanging down to the rudder. So! That means they climbed up the rudder, somehow swung the pot around and hung it up there to climb the rope up and around the back. And! It means that very well might be when Jack disabled the rudder so Beckett can’t give chase after their switcheroo. Absolutely amazing
Also I love the pacing and slow reveal of the undead pirates. First with the guy Will hits with an axe mysteriously getting back up. Then the hand through the moonlight in jack’s cell. Then Barbosa’s reveal to Elizabeth and the big ship scene. And then all the fun they get to have with it later: walking underwater, the showdown at Isla de la Muerta, etc.
Gore Verbinski’s Pirates trilogy is just on another level. Although 2 and 3 aren’t up there with 1 for many, I grew up with those movies and love them all. I still marathon and watch all 3 every year. Easily one of my favorite trilogies
That Hans Zimmer story is probably the most Hans Zimmer story I've ever heard. That's a dude who is dedicated to an art form and ideas in ways words can't really express
I loved the way the movie ended with Capt Jack closing the compass on beat to the start of the iconic score. I watched that part so much when I rented it so so long ago
So, Disney is "celebrating" Pirates by making money off Johnny Depp AGAIN, still with no apology to him, and firing him from Pirates, and carrying on the franchise without him? Just wow....
Are you going to do a "Sound of Freedom" movie review or are you that far gone now Chris. What happened to you? Have you fully sold out to Hollywood? I've been watching you since being a teenager, you were always so energetic and happy especially during those hilariocity reviews. Who could have forgotten those paired videos with the flick pick? It was this particular movie with which I trained my English skills. I loved it so much that I was not tiring at all from watching and re-watching it multiple times in the span of a few weeks. I watched it in my native language first, then added the English subtitles. Then I watched it in English with subtitles in my native language. Then English with English subtitles. Then no subtitles at all. At this point I probable knew every line that was said in the film by heart. And in doing this I grew confident enough to turn to other English media and thus improve my language proficiency by a lot. I haven't watched the movie in years now, and I don't know when I will get a chance to do so again. But it will forever hold a very special place in my memory. Thank you for this review for it reminded me of a very interesting part of my youth.
It blows my mind remembering that this, Shrek 1 and 2, the first two Raimi Spider-Mans, and the ENTIRE Lord of the Rings trilogy all came out in the space of less than 5 years. All masterpieces that shaped my adolescence and continue to have impact to this day. What a fucking time that was.
One of three movies that I remember seeing more than once in the theater and if I remember right, this is the one I saw the most times - I think it was 5. Saw Twister 3 times (I was 11 and it was amazing to me, lol), and Fury Road twice (wanted to see it more but life was busy). Probably would’ve seen Maverick more than once if I could have.

I mean, it’s fine but it’s basically a cover of the Gladiator score
The whole trilogy is incredible. So many well-written characters, and the special effects still hold up insanely well. Especially Davy Jones
My fav trilogy of all time.
We won't talk about the two spinoffs 😉

Johnny Depp's portrayal of Jack Sparrow is bloody iconic

True. But i think we can all agree he worked better as a funny man than a protagonist. The post-World’s End sequels are proof of that.
He is now permanently Jack Sparrow
You're Bloody Iconic
CAPTAIN* Jack Sparrow🙄😁
The original Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy is one of my favorite trilogies of all time. My wife and I watch it every summer. We have gotten tattoos based on them. My wife walked down the isle at our wedding to a song from at world’s end. It’s so sad that they don’t make movies as amazing and epic as these anymore. Definitely what I would call classic!
The trilogy is straight up the PERFECT summer blockbusters. I cannot think of better movies for the summer.

He became jack
Same. It's hard to picture now for many people considering how goofy the later films in the series got but the first film really was such an unexpectedly great experience for those who saw it for the very first time.
I love how “core memory” is just something people say now.

Fan fiction?? More like people just googled smut images of them and flicked their beans or whatever they had.

I wish I had been a 12 year old girl when this movie came out. It would have been the exactly right movie at exactly the right time! At age 12, I was attempting on writing my own pirate novel, with the following plot (not kidding!): A young girl from a rich, noble family is kidnapped onto a pirate ship, falls in love with a guy waaay below her societal status, is sent over the plank and lands on a deserted island... and the main protagonist was called Jack.
male protagonist, I mean.
Bruh, i was 12 years old. Keira Knightley was my ultimate crush😂😅

I think Dead Mans Chest was a very good movie, but At Worlds End just wasnt up to par with the first 2 movies
Bill Nighy as Davy Jones is enough to say that Dead Man's Chest is an amazing movie. It was probably the best motion capture work I've seen since Andy Serkis as Gollum. Absolutely flawless CGI and acting from Nighy
Maybe I need to rewatch 2 and 3 and give it another chance. Remember not liking them as much as 1, but can't remember why now.
World's End was totally incomprehensible
Dude I love At World's End
Great movie. So quotable. What I might love the most is how tight the story is; how Sparrow pieces together who Will is the moment they meet and seems to go along to get free… when in reality he’s putting a plan into action to retake his ship and defeat the curse. So good.
They just don’t make movies like this anymore. The costume design, the practical effects, all of it. Iconic

I saw this in cinema it was phenomenal well worth the experience when the experiences weren't tainted by the interwebs. 😂
Happy 18th birthday!
Chris you've gotta do a review of the Sound of Freedom movie. This one is making waves at the box office right now
My buddy and I were obsessed with this movie when it came out. We would hang out on the weekends, drink rum, and watch this flick. Still holds up as one of the best adventure movies ever made.
"BUT WHY IS THE RUM GONE!?"
DMTNT wasn't that bad. At least it had some cool visuals and Javier Bardem being awesome. The fourth one never happened.

The original still holds true though and Its in my collection :)
To recommend some older pirate movies just cause.
Didn't expect this review! I love this movie, and the original trilogy as a whole.
I love the second movie, Bill Nighy as Davy Jones is some of the best CGI Motion Capture thing performance I've seen, probably since Andy Serkis as Gollum
Bro I've looked back at Chris's older videos years ago and could never find pirates of the Caribbean 1-3. So glad he's reviewing it finally

This movie was HUGE when it came out back in 2003. Everyone at school was obsessed with it and it started this big "pirate craze" throughout the country and pop culture. 2003-2006 every Halloween, literally 1/3 of all the kids would be dressed as pirates.

Thank you for sharing that cool story!

Finally! When I first found this channel (years ago), I immediately tried to find your review for pirates.

@@lakernation26 fair enough
I recently rewatched this on TV and what I noticed most was the subtleties.
Like I’ve seen this movie a dozen times over the years but only this time did I see a particular detail during the excellent escape from Port Royal scene:
When they are using the rowboat (and insane upper body strength) to walk on the sea floor, Jack steps in a crab pot.
Any chance of a Sound of Freedom review?
Gore Verbinski’s Pirates trilogy is just on another level. Although 2 and 3 aren’t up there with 1 for many, I grew up with those movies and love them all. I still marathon and watch all 3 every year. Easily one of my favorite trilogies
