Meh, just another speculation boom. Beanie babies and pokemon cards were equally dumb. The fact that the devs can remove the value should be telling; but the people that get into this kind of thing have a gambling addiction, so until the whole community runs out of steam they won't notice.
@@504344 Pokemon cards at least had practical value as part of a tabletop game, something I can't say for beanie babies or NFTs. Since when is Gargamel an antisemitic dogwhistle? It's a popular Belgian comic character, there are a hundred more reasons why CryptoGarga would choose that username other than signaling to the world he'd be antisemitic.
The whole point of a dog whistle is to be subtle and leave room for doubt. Of course Gargamel is not necessarily a racist name, but it has been used by some as a subtle one. If they had chosen an unambiguously racist name, it would not be a dog whistle. If no other racist signs existed in their project, nobody would care about the name Gargamel, but when so many subtle (and some not so subtle) things compound, people will suspect that "Gargamel" and "Yuga" are whistles.
@@adge4579 For once, CryptoGarga didn't design Gargamel. There's a huge leap between noticing Peyo probably used racist tropes while designing a character, and alleging someone who references this character did so specifically because of the racist tropes attached to it, otherwise you may as well accuse every French and Belgian kids who grew up reading Smurf comics, or any weirdo collecting smurf figurines for that matter, of racism.
@@Igor_054 Given the popularity of the smurfs, there are much more people who enjoy Gargamel as a character, who are not racist, than who are racist. In other words, when you see someone in the street who wears a Gargamel T-shirt, it is much safer to assume he does so because he enjoyed reading the Smurfs as a kid, than because he wants to sneakily show the whole word how racist he is. The issue with presenting dog wistles as a proof of racism, is that relies on a circular argument in the first place. You have to assume Garga is racist in order for the argument he used Gargamel as a dog whistle to hold any water. But when you're already convinced of the conclusion in the first place, it's as much proof as you need. It seems to me the racist accusation mostly come from NFTs being widely unpopular on the internet and him being the lead of the most famous NFT project there is, than because people genuinely believe he is racist. Considering how much people want to hate on that project and anyone involved, any reason is good reason, even tenuous accusations with shoddy proofs sound believable.

"Declared worthless"? This shit is such a scam.
this whole crypto hype seems enblematic of a larger problem to me - basically just creating money out of nothing.
Like ticktock
That problem has been around a long time. This is different, its the *democratization* of basically just creating money out of nothing.
You mean the Federal Reserve?
The problem ist that financial markets just don't work and are inefficient. It's not just NFT's. Look at the stock price of Tesla.
