  • Cream - White Room live at Royal Albert Hall, London.
    May 2, 3, 5, 6. 1080p
    17 of 22
In May of 2005 Cream returned to London's Royal Albert Hall-to the same stage where they had completed what was thought to be their final performance in 1968. It was one of the most eagerly anticipated, hard-to-get tickets in rock history. With the exception of a brief reunion set at their 1993 induction into the Rock and roll Hall of Fame, Cream had not played together in nearly four decades. This DVD documents Cream's momentous London shows. Performances from each of the four nights are featured and much more. Also included are alternate performances and interviews with Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce, and Eric Clapton. Cream formed in 1966 and disbanded in 1968. The band were a prolific and thrilling live act and toured incessantly in their short but remarkable history.

fighting that fretless bass , a d playing the hell out of it . Then there is an obviously opiate fueled Clapton , playing every chord , and lead perfectly . Watching him close his eyes ,and referencing every note, in his minds eye ,through the solo ,amazes me .

When I was a kid, I heard this song on the radio and could not get enough. The imaginary of..where the shadows run from themselves...wild...what was he talking about...I spent years following the shadows that run from themselves. The Ginger Baker beat, Clapton's lead...outstanding, Jack Bruce's bass and singing those WORDS...The words got me.
And today I will play this song quite few times in remembrance
Rest in Peace Pete Brown, your songs made a difference to a lot of folk.
Always, let the sunshine of love beam up to you Pete!
In the white room with black curtains near the station
Black roof country, no gold pavements, tired starlings
Silver horses ran down moonbeams in your dark eyes
Dawn light smiles on you leaving, my contentment
I'll wait in this place where the sun never shines
Wait in this place where the shadows run from themselves
You said no strings could secure you at the station
Platform ticket, restless diesels, goodbye windows
I walked into such a sad time at the station
As I walked out, felt my own need just beginning
I'll wait in the queue when the trains come back
Lie with you where the shadows run from themselves
At the party she was kindness in the hard crowd
Consolation for the old wound now forgotten
Yellow tigers crouched in jungles in her dark eyes
She's just dressing, goodbye windows, tired starlings
I'll sleep in this place with the lonely crowd
Lie in the dark where the shadows run from themselves

The lyrics were written by the poet Pete Brown (a friend of Jack Bruce’s) with the setting being an empty apartment and the theme being about depression and hopelessness. Brown’s first attempt at the lyrics resulted in a story about a ‘doomed hippie girl’ and had the title ‘Cinderella’s Last Goodnight’. Jack Bruce was not impressed so Brown showed him an eight-page poem he had written and Bruce used part of this for ‘White Room’. The ‘White Room’ was an actual room in an apartment that Pete Brown lived in. He said that he gave up alcohol and drugs while living there and saw the literal ‘White Room’ as a watershed for him. The lines… ‘The tired Starlings’ refers to the pollution in London that was killing them off. ‘Black roof country’ relates to the roofs where Dixon was living being covered in soot and ash from steam trains. ‘Goodbye windows’ describes people waving from train windows. extract from: REVEALED: THE HIDDEN MEANING BEHIND THE LYRICS OF 501 CLASSIC and POPULAR SONGS. I've seen younger people who didn't grow up with cream, blind faith, Derek and the dominos, and other Eric Clapton, era bands who have actually stated that he is,boring or slow. They need to listen to Claptons original rendition of crossroads and this version, of White Room. And remember he created what many others play now and was this eras inspiration. Without him and the licks many copy now, many of the later lead players who derived their inspiration from him, would never even exist. This man is truly a legend. His playing and his technique is impeccable. When he passes the music world will lose a man whe truly deserves being called a legend. God bless you, ERIC CLAPTON. you are greatly appreciated and loved. He has kept blues alive and populat as well as killer smooth lead guitar, and beautiful acoustic ballads. He has done for music and guitar playing what many never could, would or will.

Even after so many years, listening to Eric, Jack and Ginger playing together once again makes it seem as though they'd never been apart. For those millenials out there. This is called music. Great music. These 3 gentlemen actually sing the music they have written and arranged and actually play musical instruments. Intsturments they picked up as children and honed their crafts. There are no synthesizers, electonic drum beats or fake bass pounding. These are musicians. It's rock and roll. It's based in blues....the best way to rock. It warms my heart dearly to see so many young people in the audience enjoying this great reunion concert, playing music written over 40 years ago. Clapton's guitar work on this tune is some of his best in years. Throughout the concerts of this reunion, it seems that he's playing with a new energy and intensity, and seems more inspired than the past 15 years or so. Hmm. . . . Maybe he felt the need for this reunion concert more deeply than at any other time, and figured that it might be a " final opportunity "? Thanx Jack, Ginger, and Eric; maybe ONCE MORE in another, even more "spiritual surrounding "?

Arguably one of the best renditions of White Room I've ever heard. Yet there seems to be a lot of criticism of the way Jack Bruce looked and performed. At only age 61 here, consider what the man's been through. A great part of his life he dealt with drug addiction, heroin no less. Financial problems, liver cancer, Liver transplant occurring only two years before this performance. We're lucky to have seen him perform here at all. In my opinion he sounded wonderful and to compare him to Clapton isn't fair. Please play it again and enjoy.
